The Role and Future Prospects of the Japan Concrete Institute

Message

The public benefit organization Japan Concrete Institute is a group of researchers, engineers, and others, who are experts in the field of concrete engineer-ing. Our role is, through the enhancement of expertise and technology, to contribute to the development of our society by improving the quality of life for people, and by protecting them from natural disasters.Since our founding over 50

years ago in 1965, our activities to fulfill the role have been gradually expanding. As a general framework, they can be categorized into 6 fields – (1) Improvement of expert knowledge and technology, (2) Dissemination of expertise and technology, (3) Engineer training, (4) Sup-port for researchers and engineers, (5) International exchange, and (6) Public relations activities. The JCI Annual Convention is held for three days every year in order to enhance our expertise and technology. It serves as a place where research results can be revealed, and where various information can be shared through spe-cial lectures such as the Ready-Mixed Concrete Seminar and Concrete Techno Plaza, promoting the exchange of opinions.Additionally, we have published two journals “Concrete Research and Technology” (in Japanese) and “Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology” (in English), as we actively promote academic research and technology on a wide-scale regardless of national borders. We have research and technol-ogy committees within the JCI to support the promotion of research and technology related to specific themes. In regards to the dissemination of expertise and technolo-gy, we are constantly offering the information of research and technological by journals and on our website. In addi-tion, we are also creating JIS original drafts, ISO original drafts, and various technological standards and guidelines. We also hold various seminars on basic technology. For the training of concrete engineers, we have established a qualification system for the Authorized Concrete Engi-neer, the Authorized Chief Concrete Engineer, and the Au-thorized Concrete Diagnosis & Maintenance Engineer, and have produced many excellent engineers. As of April 1, 2017, there are 44,818 Authorized Concrete Engineers, 10,415 Authorized Chief Concrete Engineers, and 12,358 Authorized Concrete Diagnosis & Maintenance Engineers who have registered their qualifications, and are making

large contributions in the fields of concrete production and construction of concrete structures with excellent earth-quake-resistance and durability. The authorized engineers are continuing their education through seminars, and as of this fiscal year, we have begun to consider e-learning as a method of education for Authorized Concrete Engineers and Authorized Chief Concrete Engineers. We established a grant system from the previous fiscal year as a support for researchers and engineers. This is a grant for research and for attendance to international conferences related to concrete. From a large pool of applicants, 14 were selected for the research grant, and 6 were selected for the participation grant for international conferences. As an international exchange activity, we have concluded academic exchange agreements with overseas organiza-tions related to concrete. In addition to dispatching mem-bers to international organizations such as ACI, fib, ACF, RILEM, and ISO/TC71, we have also reached agreements with the concrete institutions in Korea, Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia. For public relations activities, we have established two committees – the “Committee on public relations strategy for image improvement of concrete” and “The Committee on Promoting Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Concrete field”. We are expecting these committees to be very active in their efforts. Here at our institute we would like to dedicate our full power towards efforts regarding various issues. We would be honored to have your cooperation and support.
