7 Ways To Become A Great
Soccer Coach
Coach by Example
If you want your players to adopt a system, philosophy, technique or even a certain type of behaviour you must
also live them daily. Your players will pick them up
from you unconsciously by modeling
Tell Stories & Reason with
Analogies
The key to kids soccer is finding the right analogy
and letting them make the connections for themselves. If you’re not following, try “Soccer Strength, how big
is your bull”?
Praise
Praise the desired behaviour in any player
who exhibits it. The rest of the team will mindlessly
model the behaviour to get the pat on the back.
Analysis Paralysis
Do not bother with the reasons you want them to practice a certain drill. Live
inside the player’s head. Ask yourself, “why would they
want to practice it”?
Make it fun and move out the way
Control the Spotlight
Reward your players with attention when they seem to be moving in the right
direction.
Make sure you always praise EFFORT!
Get Creative with your communication
especially with parents
A thing hasn’t been said until its been said a
thousand times. And you had better find a different way to say it every time
Do not turn your back on the MOB
Since the parents were mentioned in number #6, always keep your sense of
humour at all times.
The best way to disarm an angry parent is to smile- at
arms length of course…
