Universal Solvent

Water is often called the universal solvent. This is due to the fact that it is able to dissolve more substances than any other liquid.

PolarityHaving different or opposite poles.

CohesionThe sticking together of particles of the same substance.

AdhesionThe sticking together of particles of a different substance.

Ex. Water sticking to another substance.

Ex. Water sticking to water.

Surface Tension

A property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force

Ex. Water strider

Specific Heat

The amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost for one gram of a substance to change its temperature by 1oC.
