The Holy Family Parish Prayer
May God Bless each family present. And bless our entire Holy Family Parish. Make it like the family of your Son. May our moments of sorrow, give way to the seasons of joy.
May the memory of harsh words fade before the warmth of a loving touch. May the tears of sorrow be replaced by the music of laughter. May resentment be banished from our families,
and may forgiveness reign in our hearts. Today and everyday. Amen!

June 24th is set aside each year as the feast day of St.
John the Baptist. He is the patron saint of the parish
closest to us in Napa which is the parish where Fr. Pat
settled as Parochial Vicar when he left Holy Family.
What do we know about John?
John’s mother Elizabeth is noted in Luke’s Gospel
(1:36) as a relative of Mary, making him also related to
Jesus. John is mentioned in all four Gospels, especially
as the Baptizer of Jesus in the River Jordan. He is com-
monly referred to as the precursor or forerunner of
Jesus since John announces Jesus’ coming as “one who
is greater” than he, who will baptize not with water
but with the Holy Spirit.
Other titles for John include “John the Forerunner” (in
Eastern Christianity) and as the “Prophet John” in Is-
lam. To clarify the use of “Baptist,” he is sometimes
alternatively called “John the Baptizer.” Happy feast
day on June 24th.

Many people refer to the first martyrs of the Church as the Holy Innocents - the babies
who ere slaughtered by Herod the Great in an attempt to kill the Baby Jesus whom the Ma-
gi had alerted Herod to. Without their knowledge of Christ and Christianity, children un-
der two years of age in Judea were killed because of the presence of the Messiah in this
world and the worry by Herod that a king would take his place. The Feast Day of the Holy
Innocents is celebrated by the Church each year on December 28th.
June 30th commemorates the first Martyrs of the Roman Church. Here’s the story: In July of the year 64 CE, the
city of Rome burned for nine days. On the third day of the conflagration, Emperor Nero was said to have dressed
in costume and sang on the steps of his palace while playing the lyre (hence the age-old adage that Nero fiddled
while Rome burned!) In any event, Nero placed the blame for the fires on the new Christians who had found their
way to Rome from the Holy Lands and from cities where Paul had visited. He had them seized and put to death in
public by being burned, crucified or fed to wild animals in the arena. These, then, are considered the first Mar-
tyrs of the Roman Church
