“Ohiichi” - 「お日ひ
市いち
」
One of Aizu’s summer treats are the religious festivals
that has taken place at shrines and temples since long
ago. These festivals are called “Ohiichi,” and are full of
booths like goldish-scooping, kujihiki (lottery), food,
and drinks. In the evening, Bon-Odori dances are held,
and the whole community comes together in these
events that are enjoyable for adults and of course
children as well.
Ohiichi originates from the market that would be held
on the temple or shrine grounds on its “ennichi,” or holy
day. The market back then would be tinged with the
atmosphere of the religious festival, and townspeople
would exchange goods and socialize with each other.
This kind of market has gradually disappeared, but it is
thought that the name “Ohiichi,” which was a byword for
religious festival, carried on from this.
Until 1955, Ohiitachi took place in the period between
Onba-sama (the religious festival of Nanokamachi’s
Chofukuji Temple) on July 1st and Sumiyoshi-sama (the
festival of Sumiyoshi Shrine in Zaimoku-machi) on July
31st. At the time, every individual family made sekihan
(lucky red rice) and kozuyu, and invited guests from
outside town. There was also “Ohiichi-oi,” where young
people went to other towns’ Ohiichi in succession and
had a great deal of fun. Afterwards, areas that carried out
Ohiichi increased, and currently you can enjoy Ohiichi at
various places within the city until early September.
