AVAILABLE NOWNOW
Dear Traveler,I invite you to join Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) lecturer and host Quentin Mackie on this AIA-sponsored voyage among Alaska’s cobalt-blue glaciers and through the Inside Passage— the last of the great American frontiers. Although not an inherently “archaeological” destination, this region is undeniably significant as the land of the first humans to have entered the Americas, and its spectacular geography shaped their settlements and cultures. Dr. Mackie is an archaeologist who specializes in First American studies and, during onboard lectures (as part of a team of onboard experts) and informal discussions, he will provide insights into the peopling of the Americas. This specially-designed itinerary uniquely combines Five-Star accommodations with exploration-style travel as you cruise from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Juneau, Alaska, under the lingering glow of the long days of summer. Marvel at towering mountains, untouched coastlines, and abundant wildlife as they unfold around you in an immense panorama. The Five-Star small ship Le Soléal, with only 110 elegantly-appointed staterooms and suites (most with balconies), is ideal for navigating narrow fjords and isolated coves that are inaccessible to larger ships. In terms of environmental responsibility, it is worth noting that Le Soléal has earned the prestigious “clean ship” certification. Experience the unforgettable scenery of southeastern Alaska and Northwestern Pacific Canada, and view thrilling wildlife up close, from observation decks and during excursions aboard smaller expedition vessels. Travel through the serene Inside Passage and into remote inlets in search of harbor seals, porpoises, sea lions and sea otters. Call at archetypal Alaskan towns, including colorful Ketchikan, rich in Alaskan art and tradition; off-the-beaten-path Petersburg, the region’s “Little Norway”; and historic Sitka, a cultural fusion of indigenous Tlingit and Russian heritage. Cruise majestic Misty Fjords National Monument and Tracy Arm Fjord, a seascape of plunging waterfalls and serrated peaks, to the face of the monumental Dawes and South Sawyer Glaciers. Also available are a pre-program option in cosmopolitan Vancouver, British Columbia’s most vibrant city; and a post-program option deep into Alaska’s interior to explore Denali National Park and visit the former frontier trading post of Fairbanks. This program is co-sponsored by other organizations, so I urge you to book now while space and Early Booking Savings are still available!Sincerely,
R. Todd NielsenDirector, AIA ToursArchaeological Institute of AmericaArchaeological Institute of America lecturer and host Quentin Mackie is an Associate Professor in Anthropology at the University of Victoria, B.C., Canada. He has over 30 years of experience working on the archaeology of the Northwest Coast of North America, with a particular focus on the period of earliest human occupation starting about 14,000 years ago. Dr. Mackie has worked most extensively in Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands), where long-term sea level changes have led him to find and explore archaeological sites that are highly-stranded or deeply-drowned on ancient coastlines, as well as interior “behavioral magnets” such as karst caves, which drew people inland who were interested in hunting bears in their winter dens. Together with his close colleagues Daryl Fedje and Duncan McLaren, their students, and First Nations participants, he has also worked in the Salish Sea on raised paleo-shorelines and on the central coast near Hakai Pass, where the team recently discovered ancient human footprints dating to about 13,000 years ago. Dr. Mackie’s research interests also include stone tool technology, method and theory of coastal adaptations, and the first peopling of the Americas. ABOUT AIA TOURSThe Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) is the oldest and largest archaeological organization in North America. Exploring the Inside Passage
Vancouver, British ColumbiaDynamic Vancouver, British Columbia’s largest city, is the cultural and financial heart of Canada’s Pacific Northwest.
Cruising the Inside PassageAboard our Five-Star ship, experience the Inside Passage, one of the most scenic waterways in the world, cruising amid countless islands, thickly blanketed forests, hidden bays and coves, sandy beaches and lofty waterfalls flowing from mountain cliffs. Be on deck to watch for cavorting sea lions and breaching orcas in the deep waters and look for Sitka black-tailed deer, mink and river otters roaming the shores and mountainsides.
Misty Fjords National Monument, AlaskaEnjoy the rare opportunity to cruise the glacier-sculpted inlets of Misty Fjords, an American treasure harboring awe-inspiring scenery and wildlife. Observe the running streams flowing through stands of evergreens, merging into mighty waterfalls plunging down 3000-foot-tall, near-vertical, granite-faced cliffs
(weather and sea conditions permitting).
Shaped by the Ice Age and sheltered from the Pacific Ocean by one thousand miles of islands lining North America’s Pacific coast, the Inside Passage distills untamed Alaska with magnificent glaciers,
snowcapped mountains and pristine wilderness. Stand on the deck of our Five-Star small ship as you cruise protected cliff-rimmed fjords and inlets of serene waters. Watch for wildlife—bald eagles, harbor seals, humpback whales and brown bears. Experience the thunderous calving of the Dawes and South Sawyer Glaciers, venture into narrow Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm and explore the Passage’s hidden treasure—seldom-visited Elfin Cove. Along the way, encounter the indigenous culture of the Tlingit, onion-domed churches built by
Russian fur traders, quirky fishing villages, trading outposts settled by American pioneers and gold rush settlements built over a century ago.

KetchikanBacked by the forested slopes of Deer Mountain, the fishing town of Ketchikan is the “salmon capital of the world.” Stroll the gold rush-era boardwalks of Creek Street and watch spawning salmon swimming upstream through the middle of town along the well-known “Salmon Ladder.” A rich profusion of Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian arts harmonize the town’s cultural facets. See the art of Potlatch Totem Park, where a master craftsman demonstrates the ancient technique of hand-carving a totem pole.
LeConte BayCruise to the mouth of LeConte Bay, where the protected waters form a natural refuge for harbor seals from predators. From aboard smaller expedition vessels, watch for mother seals and pups sunning themselves on icebergs. Listen for white thunder as LeConte Glacier—North America’s southernmost tidewater glacier—frequently calves icebergs.
PetersburgKnown as “the town that fish built” and settled along the peaceful Wrangell Narrows by late-19th-century Norwegian fishermen, the authentic village of Petersburg is filled with the traditional rosemåling design on its walkways, storefronts and architecture. Visit Main Street and the fascinating Clausen Museum, which forms a repository for the collective memory of the town’s former residents. At the historic Sons of Norway Hall, discover Norwegian folkloric traditions during a specially arranged song and dance presentation. Point Adolphus/Elfin CoveFrom the observation deck, search for humpback whales and orcas feeding in the nutrient-rich waters of Point Adolphus while cruising through Icy Strait, where tidal waters teem with marine life. Watch for sea lions and bald eagles drawn by the abundance of salmon. Go ashore to explore pristine Chichagof Island and visit the small fishing community of Elfin Cove. Situated across from Glacier Bay National Park and with only 20 permanent residents, this hamlet comes alive in summer, attracting fishing enthusiasts.
