IndianHealthServiceOverview• TheIndianHealthService(IHS)isanagencywithintheDepartmentofHealthandHumanServices.• Theprovisionofhealthservicestomembersoffederallyrecognizedtribesgrewoutofthespecialgovernment-togovernmentrelationshipbetweenthefederalgovernmentandIndiantribes.Thisrelationship,establishedin1787,isbasedonArticleI,Section8oftheConstitution,andhasbeengivenformandsubstancebynumeroustreaties,laws,SupremeCourtdecisions,andExecutiveOrders.• TheIHSprovidesacomprehensivehealthservicedeliverysystemforabout2.1millionAmericanIndiansandAlaskaNativeswhobelongto566federallyrecognizedtribesin35states.
