GRANVILLE ISLAND STUDYARSC 7001 Foundat ion Studio [Fal l 2012]Professors: Wesley Wol l in & Peter LevarTeam: David Gordon, R i ley Syjuco & Alex Raymundo
Granvi l le I s land has been a pr imary at t rac t ion for any locale and tour is t s people in Vancouver. The man made is land consis t s of tour is t a t t rac t ing act iv i t ies that i s very a l ive and v ibrant . The is land gives people great phys ical exper ience and a breathe of f resh ai r .
The in ten t of the s i te s tudy is to observe thoroughly the act iv i t ies and the character of the sector provided by the ins t ruc tor . David, R i ley and I were ass igned to inves t igate Sector 4 which is on Johns ton St reet a long the Publ ic Market . We did several s i te v is i t s and produced sketches to capture the main character is t ic of the sector. Through a ser ies of inves t igat ion and compi la t ion of ideas, our group produced a rendered s i te p lan that we th ink bes t descr ibes Sector 4.
“There is a feeling of history, of culture that resides on the island with the waterfront buildings, historically being an important part of Vancouver’s growth...This significance can be best described as controlled chaos, not without a purpose but chaos in its primal state of disorder.” - David, Riley and Alex.

The projec t in ten t i s to have a minimal is t ic approach. Each e lement mus t be designed in accordance to the c l ien t needs - noth ing more, noth ing less. Several fac tors were cons idered as wel l dur ing the design process such as l igh t and the kayak s torage. L ight was impor tant because the chosen s i te i s r igh t under Granvi l le Br idge which overshadows the s i te every hour of the day. Sky l igh ts were incorporated to le t Nor thern l igh t in. The 16 f t long kayak mus t a lso have a s torage for Gavin to p lace i t a f ter use. Because of the t igh t space of the bui ld ing locat ion, the Kayak is to be placed hanging under the f loor assembly.

WEST COAST MODERNISMCal i forn ia, U.S. - Los Angeles, La Jo l la, Palm Spr ings [Winter 2013]Team: David Gordon, R i ley Syjuco, Prasetyo Mahardika, Vinny Enoch & Alex Raymundo
In celebration of Architectural Modernism in February 2013, me and my team decided to pay a visit in some of the modern buildings in the area of southern California. Some of these classic buildings are the Salk Institute in La Jolla, The Schindler’s House, The Eames’ House and The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
The intent of our visit is to analyze the organization of spaces, materials used and natural lighting. The architect’s background were also looked at as well as their contributions in the world of Architecture.
Salk Institutes open courtyard provides natural light into the buildings and promotes collaboration.
Salk Institutes corridor capturing natural light.
Eames’ House Facade is a collage of nature and building materials.
Walt Disney Concert Hall’s dominating organic form and featuring stairs using a classic material, travertine.
The Schindler’s House is constructed with the most basic building materials: Concrete and Wood.

VIVA VAN: ROBSON ROLLAXTeam: Ains ley Viggers, Emi ly Pawluk, Jon Toronchuk & Anton Lukashov
Robson Rol lax is a des ign concept developed for the Robson Redux 2014 design compet i t ion. The design is to encourage Vancouver i tes to connect and in teract wi th o ther people and the c i ty. The undula t ing wood s t ruc ture provides a place for res t , p lay, and shel ter on or under.
The ro l l ing wave mimics the ro l l ing s i l lhouet te of the mountains that cascade down the ocean waters. These are both memorable features t rue to the character is t ics and ident i ty when v is i t ing Vancouver.
The beaut i fu l s t ruc ture showcases the use of wood and i t s capabi l i t ies in a unique way that wi l l c reate conversat ions and remind us of our v ibrant wood indus t ry here in BC.
