Cardiovascular Technology Program(Cardiovascular Technology (CVT))

The cardiovascular technologist performsdiagnostic examinations and therapeuticinterventions of the heart and/or blood vesselsunder the request or direction of a physician inthe following:

- Invasive- Cardiac catheterization- Noninvasive: Echocardiography,

electrocardiography (ECG),

Cardiovascular Technologists are trainedprofessionals that evaluate and assist in treatingpatients (pediatrics and adults) with medicalillness of the heart and blood circulation.

The technologist, while working withcardiologist and nurses in the cardiaccatheterization laboratory, uses medicalequipment such as blood pressure recordingequipment, cardiac catheters, and pacemaker. The team performs the catheterization studyusing x-rays while wearing a lead apron forseveral hours. Therefore, this practicenecessitates a technologist to be in a good healthand with high physical stamina.

A technologist conducts noninvasive proceduresrelated to diagnosis of heart diseases. Forexample, in cardiac stress testing, atechnologists guides patients to perform physicalexercises (walking on a treadmill) whilerecording the electrical activity of the heart. Inaddition, a technologist may use Holter monitorsto reord the electrical activity of the heart.
