BLACK DIAMOND CHOIR
Organized in 1969, the student gospel group has been
singing and sharing the “Good News” locally and in various
locations including Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio,
and Georgia. BDC is the only gospel choir on the University
of Louisville campus and is one of the oldest college gospel
choirs in the state of Kentucky. The choir, made up of
University of Louisville students, will celebrate its 46th year
of existence this year. The choir is led by director Jason
Clayborn and advised by Leondra Gully.

The University of Louisvi l le Alumni Associat ion establ ished the Alumnus of the Year and the Alumni Fellows program in 1983. These awards recognize graduates who have distinguished themselves in their professional fields and are exemplary ambassadors for the university and their college or school. Recipients reflect the high standing and character of their alma mater.
The Alumnus of the Year award is the highest honor that the University of Louisvi l le Alumni Association bestows. It recognizes outstanding graduates who have made great contributions to their community, state, or nation through public service, distinguished themselves in their careers, and demonstrated a bel ief in the mission of UofL.
The Alumni Associat ion also recognizes outstanding personal achievement through the Alumni Fellows awards. Alumni Fellows are graduates who are exemplary ambassadors for their UofL school or college through contributions to their professional f ields and their communities.

JOSEPH MCSWEENY, 71A
Joseph M. McSweeny received his Bachelor of Arts in
Mathematics from the University of Louisvi l le in 1971 and
his Master of Business Administration in Finance from Pace
University. A graduate of the Naval Nuclear Power School,
McSweeny served as a Lieutenant in the United States
Navy and completed four nuclear submarine patrols in the
Pacif ic. He is a member of the United States Submarine
Veterans Association.
McSweeny serves as pres ident and t reasurer o f the
McSweeny Fami l y Founda t ion , wh ich funds you th
scholarships in New York and recent ly ret i red as the
president of Global Sales of Marsh LLC. He began his
insurance brokerage and r isk management consul t ing
career with Marsh in 1976, r is ing to managing director
and head of the global uti l ity industry practice. He led the
firm’s nuclear insurance consulting and spent seven years
as the President of Marsh’s United States/Canada Division.
McSweeny is a member of the University of Louisvi l le Arts
and Sciences Advisory Council and his family has endowed
the Joseph and Joan McSweeny Divers i ty Endowment
Fellowship in Natural Sciences at the UofL College of Arts
& Sciences and the Louis Pedigo Mathematic Scholarship.
He formerly served as vice chairman and a member of
the Board of Trustees for St. Thomas Aquinas College in
Sparkhil l, New York.
McSweeny and his wife, Joan, live in Longboat Key, Florida
and have three children.

W. KENT OYLER, I I I, 80B, 82GB
W. Kent Oyler, I I I , received his Bachelor of Science in
Marketing in 1980 and his Master of Business Administration
in 1982 from the University of Louisvi l le.
Oyler, an entrepreneur, is president and CEO of Greater
Louisvi l le Inc. Prior, he served on GLI’s board for eight
years, has twice chaired its EnterpriseCorp, and serves
on GLI’s Advantage Louisvi l le Steering Committee. Oyler
has served as the managing partner for OPM Services,
serves as executive chairman of Alliance Cost Containment,
Measure Consumer Perspectives and Simpak International.
He is also founder of Power Flats, formerly CEO of Icelease
Partners and CFO with Henry Vogt Company. Oyler is
credited with founding or co-founding at least nineteen
businesses.
Oyler is a member of the University of Louisvi l le Board
o f Overseers , the Un ivers i t y o f Lou isv i l l e Bus iness
Entrepreneuria l Counci l and the University of Louisvi l le
College of Business Board of Advisors. He received the 2001
UofL College of Business Distinguished Alumnus Award and
is a member of UofL’s Entrepreneurship Circle of Fame.
Oyler has served on many boards, including Leadership
Louisvi l le, Junior Achievement, Kentucky Science Center,
Metro YMCA, Venture Connectors, Tocquevil le Society and
Metro Police Foundation.
Oyler resides in Louisvi l le with his wife, Kathy, and has
three daughters.

VIRGINIA WILSON, 84DH
Dr. James R. Wilson received his Doctor of Dental Medicine
from the University of Louisvi l le in 1984. He received a
Bachelor of Science from University of Kentucky. He is
an Eagle Scout and member of the North Carolina Dental
Society, Internat ional Congress of Oral Implantologist
Fellows, Fifth District Dental Society, The American Dental
Association and North Carolina Mission of Mercy. He has
over 30 years of dental experience.
Dr. Virginia K. “Ginny” Wilson received an Associate of
Health Science in Dental Hygiene from the University of
Louisvi l le School of Dentistry and a Bachelor of Science
in Science-Dental Hygiene from the University of Louisvil le
College of Arts and Sciences in 1984. She received her
Doctor of Dental Science from the Universi ty of North
Carolina Chapel Hil l in 1996 and graduated with honors in
the top five percent of her dental school class.
S ince 1986, the W i lsons have operated the V i rg in ia
K. W i lson, DDS and James R. W i lson, DMD pract ice
in Jacksonvi l le, North Carol ina. In 2007, the Wi lson’s
established the Wilson Fund in Teaching Excellence at the
University of Louisvi l le School of Dentistry in honor of Dr.
Kenneth W. Chapman, Drs. Phil l ip and Helen Delivanis and
Dr. George Sauer. The endowment provides funding for an
annual teaching award in the School of Dentistry. Faculty
members receiving the award are selected based upon
recommendations from students, staff and other faculty.
Drs. James and Ginny Wi lson reside in Hubert, North
Carolina and have two children.

THEODORE A. BRIDGEWATER, 13E
Theodore (Teddy) A. Bridgewater received his Bachelor
of Science in Sports Administrat ion from the University
of Louisv i l le Col lege of Educat ion in 2013. He played
quarterback for the Cardinals from 2011 to 2013. In his
three seasons as a starter, he won 27 games and was
ranked third in school history with 9,817 passing yards and
72 touchdown throws. He was selected by the Minnesota
Vik ings in 2013 as the 32nd and f inal pick of the f i rst
round of the draft and became starting quarterback almost
immediately.
NFL acco lades in 2015 inc lude be ing se lec ted as
quarterback of the 2014 NFL All-Rookie team by the Pro
Football Writers of America. In 2014, Bridgewater won the
2014 Pepsi Rookie of the year, was named the National
Football Conference (NFC) North Rookie of the Year, and
was twice named the NFL 2014 Pepsi Rookie of The Week
and the NFL 2014 GMC Never Say Never Moment Winner.
Dur ing h is ath let ic tenure at UofL, Teddy was named
the 2011 Big East Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-
American by Rivals.com, Scout.com, CBS Sports and
Sporting News. He led the Cardinals to Sugar Bowl and
Russell Athletic Bowl victories in 2013 and was named the
MVP of both games. Academical ly, Bridgewater worked
diligently to complete his sports administration degree early
to set himself up for success. While a student, he logged
countless volunteer hours and worked with local youth,
earning him the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in 2013.
Bridgewater is the youngest of four children and the first
person in his family to graduate from college.

PAUL D. CARRICO, 73GS
Paul D. Carrico graduated from the University of Louisvi l le
with a masters in chemical engineering in 1973 and received
his MS in management from the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology in 1993.
Carrico served as the Chief Executive Officer and President
at Axia l l Corporat ion ( former ly known as Georgia Gul f
Coorporat ion) f rom 2008 unt i l h is ret i rement in 2015.
Pr ior to h is pos i t ion as CEO and Pres ident , he he ld
posit ions as the Vice President of Chemicals and Vinyls
and Vice President of Polymers. Carrico held the position
of General Manager, Resin/Olefins Division, upon joining
Axial l Corporation in 1999 as part of its acquisit ion of the
vinyl business of Condea Vista where he held a number of
commercial and manufacturing management positions. He
is a 2013 inductee to the Triangle Fraternity Wall of Fame
and has served on a number of industry and public boards
during his career.
Carr ico is a Louisv i l le nat ive, but current ly res ides in
Johns Creek, Georgia. He and his wife, Anna Marie, have
4 children and 9 grandchildren.

Demetr ius Hol loway rece ived h is Bachelor of Ar ts in
Polit ical Science in 1997 and his Juris Doctorate in 2000
from the University of Louisvi l le. Holloway was awarded
a Woodford R. Porter Scholarship and was a member
of Golden Key National Honor Society, Pi Sigma Alpha
Pol it ical Science Honor Society and Alpha Kappa Delta
International Sociology Honor Society.
Holloway is a defense attorney with Stites and Harbison
representing employers in a variety of state and federal
c iv i l suits including T it le VI I , the Age Discr iminat ion in
Employment Act, the Americans with Disabil it ies Act, the
Family Medical Leave Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act,
the Kentucky Civi l Rights Act and common-law tort claims
related to employment. Holloway is not only a member of
the American Bar Association, Kentucky Bar Association,
and Louisv i l le Bar Associat ion, but a lso of the f i rm’s
Employment Law Service Group and an affiliated member of
the Business Litigation Service Group and Torts & Insurance
Practice Service Group. Holloway serves as co-chair of the
firm’s Diversity Committee.
Holloway devotes his time as a member of the Board of
Directors of Boys & Gir ls Club of Kentuckiana, National
Public Radio – Trio Board and Louisvi l le Enterprise Group.
He is Chairman of the Board of Deacons and Finance Board
at his church and a member of the Board of Directors for
the Louisvi l le Urban League.

Dr. James E. George received both his Doctor of Medicine
from the University of Louisvil le School of Medicine and his
Juris Doctorate from the University of Louisvi l le Louis D.
Brandeis School of Law in 1970. He received his Bachelor
of Arts from Columbia University.
Dr. George current ly serves as strategic advisor to the
president of TeamHealth. Prior to this position, he served
as group president of TeamHealth Emergency Medicine.
Dr. George is a member of the c l in ica l facul ty in the
Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in the School of
Osteopathic Medic ine. He has served as a pract ic ing
emergency physician, chair of the Department of Emergency
Medicine, VP of the medical staff, and a member of the
Board of Trustees at Underwood-Memoria l Hospita l in
Woodbury, New Jersey. He is the former president of
Patrack, George, Korin, Quattrone, Blumberg & Chant, PC,
and Emergency Physician Associates. Dr. George is also
an attorney and is certif ied as a Diplomat of the American
Board of Law and Medicine and as a Fellow of the American
College of Legal Medicine.
Active in numerous professional and trade associations, Dr.
George is a national authority on the medico-legal aspects
of emergency care. He is the author of the book, Law
and Emergency Care. In 2003, Dr. George received the
New Jersey American College of Emergency Physicians
Distinguished Service Award. In 2008, he was the recipient
of the Heroes of Emergency Medic ine award by the
American College of Emergency Physicians.

JEFFREY A. REED, 84MU, 91L
Jeffrey A. Reed received his Bachelor of Music Education
from the University of Louisvi l le in 1984. He received his
Juris Doctorate from the University of Louisvi l le in 1991
and also holds a Master’s degree in conducting from the
University of Iowa.
Reed, known for combining classical and popular music
on the same program, co-founded Orchestra Kentucky in
2000, where he currently serves as music director.
Reed has worked with Glen Campbell, B. J. Thomas, Larry
Gatlin, Peter Tork, Sandi Patty, Keith Emerson, Neil Sedaka,
Paul Wil l iams and many others in appearances with his
own orchestra and orchestras in St. Petersburg (Russia)
and South Korea. He has twice appeared with the Royal
Phi lharmonic at London’s Royal Albert Hal l , conducted
orchestras in eight cit ies across the nation, and has been
nationally recognized. In addition to his work with Orchestra
Kentucky, Jeffrey Reed has served as music director of the
North Charleston Pops and the Murfreesboro Symphony.
Reed and his wife, Dr. Sherryl B. Reed 84A, 88MD, 91MR,
reside in Bowling Green, Kentucky. They have two children,
both students at the Universi ty of Louisvi l le School of
Music.

MELISSA D. PINTO, 02N, 09GN
Dr. Melissa D. Pinto, PhD, RN, FAAN, received her Bachelor
of Science in Nursing in 2002, her Cert i f icate in Health
Professionals Education in 2007, a Master of Science in
Nursing in 2009 and her PhD in Nursing in 2009 from the
University of Louisvi l le.
Dr. Pinto is an assistant professor at Emory University’s Nell
Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. Her teaching focuses
on abnormal child and adolescent psychopathology and
research methods. She completed a fe l lowship at NIH
through the Nat ional Inst i tute of Nurs ing Research in
Molecular Genetics and was the recipient of a four year
NIH KL2 Career Development Award through the Cleveland
Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative at Case
Western Reserve Un ivers i ty School o f Medic ine. Dr.
Pinto previously served as a teaching assistant, research
assistant and graduate fellow at the UofL School of Nursing
and as a staff nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Norton
Suburban Hospital in Louisvi l le, Kentucky.
Dr. Pinto presented her avatar-based health intervention
research at the White House Technology Innovations for
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Treatment Conference.
She has provided consultat ion to national pol icymakers
regarding dissemination of behavioral health technologies,
was inducted as a fe l low of the American Academy of
Nursing, and is the recipient of numerous awards and
honors.
Dr. Pinto resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

THERESE S. HUGHES, 01GB, 07GH
Dr. Therese S. Hughes received her Master of Publ ic
Administration, summa cum laude, in 2001 and her PhD
in Epidemiology in 2007 from the University of Louisvi l le.
Dr. Hughes received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing,
cum laude, from the University of the State of New York
Regents Col lege in 1999. She is cert i f ied in Infect ious
Disease Epidemiology by Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Hughes is an Epidemio log ist wi th Bapt is t Heal th
System in Lexington and works c losely with the state
health department and Center for Disease Control and
Prevention on public health issues. She previously served
as quality improvement manager with Coventry Health Care
of Kentucky, has worked as an international health senior
analyst and branch chief of the Middle East Off ice with
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the
Office of the Secretary of Health, and as an epidemiology
research nurse special ist with the National Inst itutes of
Health.
Dr. Hughes is the recipient of the 2007 UofL Outstanding
Student Award, the Graduate Deans Citation and the 2001
Alice Eaves Barnes Award for Achievement in a Master’s
Program. She is a member of Del ta Omega Honorary
Society in Publ ic Health and Golden Key Internat ional
Honor Society, has authored a number of publ icat ions,
and is a member of the American Public Health Association,
the Society for Epidemiology Research, and the Society
for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
Dr. Hughes and her husband, John, have a son and reside
in Louisvi l le.

DR. BETTY J. TATRO, 70A, 73GK
Dr. Bet ty J . Tat ro rece ived her Bache lor o f Ar ts in
Psychology from the University of Louisvi l le Col lege of
Arts and Sciences in 1970 and her Master of Science in
Social Work from the UofL Raymond A. Kent School of
Social Work in 1973. In 1998, she received a PhD in Public
Administration from Arizona State University. Dr. Tatro is a
member of Pi Beta Phi and Mortar Board.
Dr. Tatro started B.J. Tatro Consulting, a f irm special izing
in planning, policy research, program evaluation, and group
process for early childhood, oral health, education, health
and human services organizations. Her clients include state
and local government entit ies, foundations, and numerous
community organizat ions, as wel l as the Associat ion of
State and Territorial Dental Directors and the National Oral
Health Policy Center.
Previously, Dr. Tatro served as deputy assistant director
of aging, fami ly, and chi ldren’s services at the Ar izona
Department of Economic Security. She has also served
as an instructor with Arizona State University’s Nonprofit
Management Institute, the Arizona Regional Community
Pol icing Institute, the Bob Ramsey Executive Education
Program and the School of Public Affairs. She has served
as chief of the Off ice of Evaluat ion in the Div is ion of
Management Review with Arizona Department of Economic
Security and as the planning and evaluation manager and
coordinator of program monitor ing and evaluat ion with
the Division of Developmental Disabil it ies at the Arizona
Department of Economic Security.
Dr. Tatro resides in Scottsdale, Arizona with her husband,
Donald.

JIM KING, 73B ( IN MEMORIAM)
Jim King, a l i fetime Louisvi l l ian and St. Xavier High School
graduate, received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting
from the University of Louisvi l le in 1973.
Through college, Jim worked as a production expediter at
the Henry Vogt Machine Company, later joined Ernst and
Ernst, became a Cert i f ied Publ ic Accountant, and then
founded his own CPA firm, King & Company, PSC in 1981.
His early work with banks led to his acquisit ion of Nelson
County bank in 1987, which later became King Southern
Bank with locations in Chaplin, Bloomfield and Louisvi l le.
J im was e lect ion to chairman of both the Community
Bankers Association of Kentucky and the Kentucky Bankers
Association.
Jim began a career in public service with his election to
the Louisvi l le Metro Counci l in 2004. After serving as
vice chair and chair of the democrat ic caucus, he was
elected president and re-elected as Counci l President
for an unprecedented five terms. Key accomplishments
included successful negotiations to ensure f inancing for
the YUM Center, helping bring the Omni Hotel project to
fruit ion, labor settlement negotiations with the Louisvi l le
Orchestra musicians, and init iatives to benefit UofL, Arts
and Cultural organizations and his own District 10.
During his l i fe, Jim also served on numerous civic boards
and organizations and at his death was a member of the
Board of the Louisv i l le Arena Author i ty, the Louisv i l le
Orchestra, the Kentucky Derby Festival, the University of
Louisville Athletic Association and Simmons College. He is
survived by his wife, Debbie, 4 children and 9 grandchildren.

J.D. NICHOLS, 64L
J. D. Nichols received his Juris Doctor from the University
of Louisvil le in 1964. Nichols is chairman of the real estate
development f irm, NTS Corporation, its subsidiaries and
aff i l iates. He began his career in construct ion and real
estate development in 1965 and has since overseen the
development of more than 10,000 acres of land and 8
mil l ion square feet of off ice, residential, commercial, and
industrial construction throughout the southeastern United
States.
Nichols has served on the UofL Board of Overseers and the
UofL Foundation, and is active in many civic and charitable
organizat ions inc luding: Kentucky Counci l on School
Performance Standards (chairman), Kentucky Education
Technology System (steer ing commit tee) , Pres ident ’s
Society of Bellarmine University (lifetime member), Executive
Committee of Greater Louisvil le Inc. (past director) and has
served countless other community organizations. Nichols
was inducted into the Junior Achievement Kentuckiana
Business Hal l of Fame in 1989 and the Foundat ion’s
downtown off ice building was renamed the J.D. Nichols
Campus for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in 2014.
Nichols is a Louisv i l le nat ive. He and h is wi fe Zelma
spl it their t ime between Louisvi l le and Lantana, Florida.
Nichols has two daughters, Kara Nichols, 99GA, 02GA and
Kimberly Segal, 90A.
