•It all began as the disability rights
movement
•The movement grew out of the civil
rights movement of 1960
•It was when people with disabilities
began to challenge social barriers
that excluded and segregated them
from their communities,.
•The first version was introduced in
April of 1988
•Sign Into law on July 26, 1990 by
President George H.W. Bush.
•The ADA was originally enacted in
public law format then rearranged
and published in the United States
Code.
•The nations proper goals regarding
individuals with disabilities was to
assure equal opportunity, full
participation, independent living and
economic self sufficiency.

The term “Disability”:
A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities of such individual or a record of such an impairment. Some major life activities include; caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, eating, sleeping, walking, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, reading, concentrating, thinking, communicating, and working. It also includes the operation of major bodily functions like the immune system, normal cell growth, digestive, respiratory, circulatory and reproductive.

Section 504 recognized that while there are major physical and mental variations in different disabilities, people with disabilities, as a group, faced similar discrimination in employment, education and access to society.

• Ramps must have a maximum slope ratio of 1:12. For every inch of incline there are 12” of ramp surface.
• A ramp landing should be a minimum of 60”.

•A rise greater than 6” or a run of 72” require hand rails on both sides.
•Where a landing changes direction it has to have a minimum dimension of 60”x60”.
•Ramps should have a maximum of 30” rise between landing.

ADA Curb Ramps

• Curb Ramps will also have domed shaped bumps for the visionless impaired
X should equal a min of 36”

•Accessible space should be at least 96” Wide with an aisle of 30”
•Parking spaces should not located in a slopped area that exceeds 1:50 in any direction.( 1” of incline = 50” of street)
•Vertical clearance of a minimum of114” at the loading zones

Act (ADAAA)
•One of the major changes
was the redefining of the
word “disability”.
•Expanding the list of major
life activities.
•Modify the language of the
ADA’s “General Rule” that
prohibited discrimination
against a qualified
individual with a disability.
