Nippon Seiki gives the new Mini a distinctive speedometerNippon Seiki supplies the eye-catching speedometer and tachometer inthe second-generation Mini from BMW. The speedometer, which canbe upgraded to include a navigation system screen in the middle, is 20 percent larger than the one in the previous-generation car. Nippon

Seiki produces the parts at its factory in Redditch, England. A majorchange in the second-generation Mini is the inclusion of standard elec-tric power steering. JTEKT of Japan supplies the standard system, whichhelps reduce fuel consumption by 0.1 liter per 100 km. TRW Automo-

tive supplies the Mini’s full braking system plus electronic stability control. TRW replaces the car's former ESC supplier, Continental.

Tom Armitage Automotive News Europe

Rüdiger Grube, 56, Daimler-Chrysler’s board member for strate-

gy, will represent the German firm onthe board of its former US subsidiary,a spokeswoman for the German au-tomaker said.

Daimler and Chrysler are splittingafter a nine-year relationship.

Chrysler Holding’s other four boardmembers will come from Cerberus, theprivate equity company that agreed tobuy 80.1 percent of Chrysler in May.

Daimler, which retains 19.9 percentof Chrysler after the sale, will alsosend two more senior managers toserve on the boards of the Chryslerauto and finance subsidiaries.

There will be no change to Grube’scurrent role at DaimlerChrysler, thespokeswoman said. Grube’s responsi-bility there covers corporate develop-ment, including corporate strategy,

mergers and acquisitions, industrialparticipation and global IT policy.

Cerberus has said it will makeChrysler profitable again within threeyears. Daimler has an interest in en-suring that Chrysler meets this goal.Daimler’s one-fifth stake will appear onits books “at equity,” meaning that theGerman firm must record its share ofthe US company’s profits or losses. ANE Grube will keep working with Chrysler.
