Dear Brothers and Sisters,2016 will go down in history as “The Year of New Beginnings.” It goes without saying (and I will reserve comment on this in an effort to avoid going off on a scathing tangent) that when President-Elect Donald Trump takes office in January, our great country as we know it will be forever changed. But that will not be the only new beginning our members face in 2017. Local One-L has a pivotal change of its own: long-time member John Zoccali unseating Tony Caifano, who faithfully served our union for two decades as Secretary-Treasurer.
Tony’s many years of commitment to the members of Local One-L cannot go unnoticed. In fact, anyone who has ever met Tony knows that it is difficult not to notice him due to his tall stature and booming voice. For over 20 years I have worked with Tony on strike campaigns and union mergers. I sat side by side with him around negotiating tables, in Council Board meetings, and in Trustee
meetings. After having worked together as long as we have, I consider us to have a bond that runs deeper than that of a union Brother. He will be sorely missed by us all at Local One-L.
I know that Tony does not accept defeat lightly, particularly after a hard-fought campaign. But I see his departure from the Secretary-Treasurer position as an open door to a new chapter in his life, filled with new opportunities. I thank Tony sincerely for his embodiment of the terms SOLIDARITY AND FRATERNITY. Tony sees himself as a true trade unionist; his unwavering convictions will no doubt serve him well in his next endeavor.
On behalf of all of our members I would like to extend congratulations and a warm welcome to our newly elected Secretary-Treasurer John Zoccali. I have come to know John rather well over the past years through his active involvement on the Council Board and as a Local One-L Trustee. I am confident that John will be effective in his new role and will work well with Executive Vice President Gene Kreis, Business Agent Dave Bartlett, myself, and the rest of our staff as we continue the proud tradition of serving you, our members of our great union.
Happy holidays to you all from all of us at Local One-L. May 2017 bring hope, peace and good health to you and your loved ones.
Fraternally,
Patrick LoPresti, President

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Charles Victor Barkowski, at age 88, in Schenectady, New York, on August 7. Charlie was the Secretary-Treasurer of his locals (Local 23-C and Local 259-M) for a combined 50 years. He
was a friend and union Brother to so many for so long, it will be difficult to imagine a world without him. Charlie was trained as an electrician in high school. He started his working career at the tender age of 16 at American Locomotive and later moved to the letterpress pressroom working for Maqua Company and Fort Orange Press. Most of Charlie’s printing career was spent at Williams Press in Menands, where he printed publications such as Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and Business Week. In 1946 Charlie was drafted into the U.S. Army and
Reserves and served in the Korean Conflict in 1950-1951. Upon his return he married his bride, Stella Gallo. They enjoyed their 60-year marriage and had five children, nine grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a family man first and foremost. We all strive to lead a life that Charlie managed to lead: one full of love and family, rewarding work, and a zest for fun (he was known as an incurable flirt who enjoyed poker, craps, and down home country music). Charlie left large shoes to fill and will forever be missed by all. Rest in peace Brother!
NEW SHOP ORGANIZED
Business Agent Dave Bartlett recently organized ACS Printing in Albany, New York. The one-year contract went into effect in August. Members of the shop also enrolled in the Inter-Local Pension Fund. Congratulations Brothers and welcome!

OUR ELECTEDDELEGATE

HEADQUARTERSBUILDING UPDATEThe sidewalk outside 113 University Place has been repointed. We held off on this project for as long as practically possible despite having needed repairs for several years. That delay appears to have worked to our benefit, as we have arranged to split the repointing cost with our first floor tenant Vapiano. The restaurant recently gained approval from the city to extend its dining area to the sidewalk. In addition, the façade work was completed on the building’s north, south and west sides.
EMERY B. MILLER SR., FORMERLOCAL 259-M PRESIDENT
It was last year that we lost one of our favorite members. Emery B. Miller Sr. passed away on December 8, 2015 at the age of 83. By all accounts, he had a great life: devoted husband, father and grandfather whose legacy was defined by honesty. His word was his bond. Emery embodied the true meaning of brotherhood. Emery’s sense of brotherhood began in earnest when he left Easton, Pennsylvania, to join the military from 1948-1952 (he left as a Corporal in the United States Army). Upon his discharge Emery did a stint at General Electric
and then moved to Utica, New York, where he joined the rank and file of the printing industry. Emery was instrumental in organizing Vick’s Litho (one of Local 259-M’s largest shops). A 24-year tenure as president of that union soon followed, lasting from 1973-1996. It was during that time Emery wore many hats including president of the Albany, Schenectady, Utica, and Poughkeepsie APTC Allied Label as well as legislative director for the State Allied Printing Council, among others. In 2011 Local 259-M merged with Local One-L. Instrumental in the negotiations of that union were Emery, Joe Belleville (Emery’s brother-in-law and successor to the presidency of that local), and Charlie Barkowski, who died in August. Emery is predeceased by his wife Helen “Sugar” Belleville Miller. He was buried with full military honors and will be remembered as a fair and upstanding man. We are all better having had Emery in our world.

3rd ANNUAL GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONSCONFERENCE HELD
Delegates from across the United States and Canada gathered in Las Vegas in June for a three-day convention at which a broad range of union issues and resolutions were discussed. GCC President George Tedeschi opened the convention with a speech that praised the merger of the GCC with the Teamsters over 11 years ago. IBT President James P. Hoffa also addressed the delegates. “We are bigger, stronger than we were five years ago at your last convention.... We have organized 150,000 people since our last convention. We are marching together for a better day and I will guarantee you that we will
be here five years from now.” Local One-L President Patrick LoPresti is a member of the GCC/IBT General Board Atlantic Region and President of the GCC/IBT North American Eastern Conference.
