2 13TH ANNUAL KOREAN AMERICAN SPINE SOCIETY MEETING
Dear KASS Colleague:WHETHER YOU ARE A NEW MEMBER, a long-time attendee, or a member
who hasn’t attended in a while, I hope you recall why KASS is always a
great meeting. We share our common interests in spine surgery, in being
better doctors, in honest dialogue, in networking, in learning about the
latest technologies, and in our heritage.
As the President of KASS this year, I am asking for your help to make this
meeting the best ever! This year’s program is going to be great and will
have something for everyone including wisdom from the senior members,
real advice for practice, and exciting debates about the hot topics in
spine surgery.
I’m also excited to host the meeting in Northern California for the first
time. The Silverado Resort recently underwent a major renovation and
features two PGA golf courses, a luxury spa, and accommodations in
your choice of “neighborhoods.” Napa Valley offers some of the best
restaurants in the Bay Area, the best wineries in the US, and plenty of
gorgeous outdoor activities for you and your family.
I’ve included my recommendations on pages 9-10.
Looking forward to seeing and hosting you in Napa!
Stephen Ryu, MD PRESIDENT, KOREAN AMERICAN SPINE SOCIETY
James Mok, MD PROGRAM CHAIR

ANNUAL DINNER GUEST SPEAKER
Charles J. Limb, MD Chief, Division of Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery
Director, Douglas Grant Cochlear Implant Center
UCSF School of Medicine
DR. LIMB COMBINES HIS TWO PASSIONS to study the way the brain creates and perceives music.
He’s a hearing specialist and surgeon who performs cochlear implantations on patients who
have lost their hearing. And he plays sax, piano, and bass.
In search of a better understanding of how the mind perceives complex auditory stimuli such as music, he’s been working
with Allen Braun to look at the brains of improvising musicians in fMRI and study what parts of the brain are involved
in the kind of deep creativity that happens when a musician is really in the groove.
He has given two TED talks, spoken at the Sundance Film Festival, and been featured in outlets as diverse as The New York
Times, CNN, PBS, National Geographic, The BBC, NPR, The Library of Congress, The Kennedy Center, and the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra.
