We are proud to provide you with our 2009‐2010 Annual Report highlighting our major projects and initiatives from this past fiscal year. From crisis counseling and support groups to Safe Touch and anti‐bullying educational programs, the Center had a remarkable year. We are grateful to all of the donors, volunteers, and advocates that continue to support us each and every day. As the economy continues to impact so many throughout the nation we have come to depend more heavily on the generosity of community members to work towards a  violence‐free community. Thank you so much for your continued support and dedication to providing violence prevention education and support for survivors of sexual violence.  

Over the past year, the Center has seen new additions to our programs, which you will read about inside this report. The design of a safety book and the establishment of bilingual therapy services were two of our major accomplishments. It is because of the commitment of staff and volunteers, our board of directors, and our  financial supporters that the Orange County Rape Crisis Center continues to work toward our mission and vision in the Orange County community and beyond.

Client Services Program Report

The Center serves primary survivors (those who have directly experienced sexual violence), secondary  survivors (friends, family, loved ones, or other people in the primary survivor’s life), professionals who work with survivors of sexual violence, and other community members in need of assistance.  During the 2009‐2010 fiscal year, the  Center served a total of 379 clients.   In addition to our 24‐hour crisis line, regular support groups, and therapy referral services, the Client  Services team focused on two major initiatives in the 2009‐2010 fiscal year:

• A collaborative training with the UNC‐Chapel Hill LGBTQ Center to promote sensitivity toward  transgender individuals and explore ways the  Center can increase accessibility to the transgender  community. 

 

• A project to improve care for survivors with  intellectual and developmental disabilities. This  initiative, supported by funding from the NC  Governor’s Crime Commission, was a collaborative effort with UNC‐Chapel Hill and the N.C. Office on Disability and Health.

Latin@ Services June 2010 marked the completion of the third year of the Center’s Latin@ Services Program, which offers bilingual and culturally‐competent services to Latin@s and other Spanish‐speakers.  

Program highlights include the second Hablando Lo Prohibido (Speaking the Forbidden) Conference and a support group in Spanish for female‐identified survivors of interpersonal violence. This support group was a collaborative  effort with the Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County.  

Note: The “@” symbol is used to avoid using masculine terms in a generic form when referring to clients. Instead of saying “Latinos” to mean Latinos and Latinas, Latin@s is used. 

Support Groups and Therapy Thirty clients participated in support groups that included a Soul Collage® workshop, a healing through movement group, a writing workshop, a support group for adult survivors of child sexual abuse and incest, and a support group for adult survivors of rape and sexual assault.  

With the support of Recovery Act funding, the Center implemented a Bilingual Therapy program which began  offering short‐term therapy to Spanish‐speaking clients in March 2010. This program has provided services to seven clients and is specifically designed to aid community members who are homeless or transitional, have a lower  socioeconomic status, and/or do not speak English.

The Community Education team provided over 440 classroom programs to over 8,800  students in the 2009‐2010 school year. We additionally reached over 950 adults and other individuals with community education programming. The need for our  programs remains apparent: Center staff provided follow‐up on over 190 red flags or disclosures of child abuse.   

Community Education Program

During the 2009‐2010 school year, the Center implemented newly‐developed programming to provide educational programs to students with disabilities in sixteen self‐contained classrooms. The team also wrote a book called “Safe Touches Only.” The book has straightforward language and pictures of real  children, which are factors that  increase understanding for young  children and children with  developmental and intellectual  disabilities.  It has received  overwhelming approval and support from teachers and parents.   

Rather  than  illustrations,  our  “Safe  Touches  Only”  book uses  pictures  of  real  people, which  are  easier  for  young children and children with disabilities to understand. In the book,  this  picture  is  captioned,  “If  someone  touches  the private parts of your body, TELL SOMEONE!” 

Our Community Education team was invited to be a member of the Chapel Hill‐Carrboro City School District’s Coordinated School Health Advisory Council.  This partnership with the school district and the Family Violence Prevention Center culminated in the  development of multi‐session programming for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, along with the support of the district to have this programming implemented in CHCCS middle school health programs.

Mission Statement: To stop sexual violence and its impact through support, education, and advocacy.  Vision Statement: We envision a just and   equitable world free of sexual violence and all other forms of oppression.  

The Orange County Rape Crisis Center is a non‐profit agency that has been serving the community since 1974. Our primary focus is to provide services to survivors and community  education on awareness and prevention of sexual violence.  

Through a 24‐hour crisis line, support groups, a therapy refer‐ral program, and our Latin@ Services Program, the Center works to meet the needs of survivors of sexual violence in our diverse community.  

The Center offers free, age‐appropriate, and culturally  competent education programs and outreach about the  incidence, awareness, and prevention of sexual violence to  children and adults throughout Orange County.
