The Ambo
“Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden pulpit which they had made for
the purpose. . . and Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the
people” (Nehemiah 8:4-5). The ambo is the stationary reading desk
used for the proclamation of the Word of God. Somewhat elevated, it
is designed with care and nobly crafted. The ambo should reflect
the dignity and sacredness of the Word proclaimed from it. In some
places the ambo is covered with a veil of the appropriate
liturgical color. On occasions of festive solemnity, it is fitting
to decorate the ambo with a simplicity that respects its
purpose.
The ambo is reserved for the readings, the responsorial psalm, the
Gospel, and the Exultet or Easter Proclamation. It may also be used
for the homily and the Prayer of the Faithful. Commentaries and
announcements are made from another suitable place. The cantor uses
the ambo only for the responsorial psalm.
During the Liturgy of the Word, look toward the ambo. For one who
listens to it with reverent attention, the Word becomes prayer
burning in the heart and desire for the Eucharist. The Word
announced from the ambo is fulfilled and given in the
Eucharist.

This year marks the 100 th anniversary of the Blessed
Virgin Mary appearing to three little shepherds in the small town
of Fatima, Portugal. Our Lady entrusted to them a message for the
world: pray for world peace and the conversion of sinners.
It was there in this small town where the Blessed Virgin appeared
to siblings Jacinta and Francisco Marto, and Lucia dos Santos,
their first cousin, as they watched over their flock. The first
apparition was May 13, 1917, and she appeared to them on the
13
th day of each month through October of that year.
The message of Fatima is a guide for mankind’s salvation through
conversion, prayer and reparation for sins against God. Each
appearance of Mary raised excitement and suspicion during those
early years of the 20
th century, drawing thousands of nearby
villagers to the spot where the children were graced with visions
from Mary, specifics of which were kept secret for decades by Lucia
following the final apparition at Fatima.
Pope Francis declared the sainthood of Jacinta Marto and Francisco
Marto during his visit to the site of the apparitions May 13 of
this 100th anniversary year.
The children’s cousin entered the Carmelites. Sister Lucia died in
2005 at the age of 97. The diocesan phase of her sainthood cause
concluded in February and now is under study at the Vatican.

When Mary Comes Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary
How the church evaluates apparitions:
The Church carefully studies claims of apparitions, as it has for
centuries, to protect the faithful from false claims. Sorting out
false claims is important for Catholics. The Church still evaluates
apparitions with an approach developed in the eighteenth century by
theologian Prospero Lambertini. Lambertini, who later became Pope
Benedict XIV, established categories for evaluation of
apparitions.
Every study is to be done under the direction of the bishop in the
diocese in which an apparition claim is made. No apparitions may
contradict church teaching or the Gospel.
It is thought that the local Church will make the best judgment
about a local apparition report. An apparition is categorized by
the Church as:
“Not worthy of belief” - lacks characteristics of something
originating with God.
“Nothing contrary to the Faith” - may or may not be of divine
origin.
“Worthy of belief” - shows traits of an occurrence arranged by
God.
“Worthy of Belief”
Apparitions found to be “worthy of belief” are also called
“approved” or “recognized” by the Church. In 2008, Father Salvatore
Perrella, a theologian from the Pontifical Marianum, an institute
in Rome that studies Mary, said that down through the centuries,
out of hundreds of claims, full Church approval has been given to
only two apparition reports. In these apparitions that are “worthy
of belief,” Mary seems to foster spiritual conversion and
reconciliation. She reminds people to pray, worship God, and live
in peace. Often, Mary appeared to simple, humble people or to
children.
Mary’s Continued Presence
Mary continues to appear in the contemporary world. In May 2016,
final approval was also given to a thirteenth claim -- the
appearances from 1983-1990 to Our Lady of the Rosary at San Nicolas
in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Formal approval was never given to the apparitions of Our Lady at
Guadalupe. They occurred in 1531, centuries before modern
guidelines for studying apparitions emerged. And yet, the church
has clearly endorsed the Guadalupe claims. A feast day was assigned
to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. In 1945, Pope Pius
XII named Our Lady of Guadalupe as patroness for both North and
South America.
The Church permits special devotions -- pilgrimages, prayers, and
liturgies -- to approved apparition sites. In addition to a feast
associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Church calendar for the
diocese of the United States includes the feast of Our Lady of
Lourdes on February 11 and the feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May
13.
Modern Church teaching reminds Catholics that Mary is indeed the
“Mother of the Church.” Perhaps it’s safe to assume that this
Mother will always be nearby, ready to come when and where the
world needs her most.

Stewardship
When the Lord returns, will he find us working diligently in the
vineyard? Or will we just be living, taking advantage of what the
Lord has given us, but not doing our part in return? If we aren’t
good stewards, everything will be taken away from us.
