Each 70 ml of CP2D solution contains 3.57 g dextrose (monohydrate), USP; 1.84 gsodium citrate (dihydrate), USP; 0.229 g citricacid (monohydrate), USP; and 0.155 g monobasic sodium phosphate (monohydrate),USP. Blood flows into the diversion pouch

• Beforebloodflows intothewholeblood collectionbag,asmall portionisdivertedinto thediversionpouch.

• Thediversionpouch capturesthesmall amountofskinthatis pickedupwhenthe needleisinserted.

• Thisbloodis transferredintopilot tubesthatareused fortesting.

Blood is diverted to the collection bag

• Oncethediversionpouchis full,bloodflowsintothe wholebloodcollectionbag (seeabove).

Leukocytes are reduced

• Oncethewholebloodis separatedintoindividual components,afilter(seeleft) removesmostofthewhite bloodcells(leukocytes)from redbloodcellsandplatelets.

Platelets

• Plateletsareacellularelementneededforbloodto clotproperly.

• Plateletscanbeprocessedfromwholeblood(seeleft), ortheycanbecollectedindividuallybyanautomated processknownasapheresis.

• Plateletsareusedtocorrectlowplateletcounts (thrombocytopenia)inpatientsundergoingchemotherapy, orotherconditionsinwhichthepatientlosesplatelets, suchasmassivetrauma.

Blood Component Therapy

• Bloodcomponenttherapyismadepossiblebecause singlewholeblooddonationsaremanufacturedinto theindividualcomponentsofredbloodcells, platelets,plasma,andcryoprecipitate.

• Asaresult,onedonationcanbenefitmultiplepatients.

Red Blood Cells

• Redbloodcellstransportoxygentothebody’stissues.

• Redbloodcellsaretransfusedtotreatanemia resultingfrom,forexample,kidneyfailure, chemotherapyregimens,gastrointestinalbleedingor bloodlossduetotraumaorsurgery.

Plasma

• Plasmaistheliquidportionoftheblood,inwhichtheredcells, whitecellsandplateletsaresuspended.

• Itcarriesclottingfactors,electrolytes,nutrients,hormonesand antibodiesasitcirculatesthroughoutthebody.

• Plasmaistransfusedtoburnpatientsandpatientssufferingmassive hemorrhageduetotraumaordisease.

Cryoprecipitate

• Cryoprecipitateisaspecialtyproductthatismadeandusedinthe treatmentofvon-Willebrand’sdiseaseandtoreplacefibrinogen.

yourhematocritlevelmustbeatleast38%andtodonatedoubleredcells,yourhematocritmustbeatleast40%.
