Crecimiento espectacular
Para finales de 2000 en Espaa haba 2228 MW instalados, siendo el tercer pas del mundo con potencia elica instalada
En el ao 2001 Espaa pas a ser el 2 pas, despes de Alemania, con 3296 MW instalados, lo que representa un 48% de incremento, respecto al ao anterior En todo el mundo haba 23000 MW instalados a finales de 2001
Energa elica- Estado actual
Los crecimientos en potencia instalada del ao 2001 respecto al ao 2000 han sido del 48 % en Espaa, y del 30 % a nivel mundial
En el 2001 en Espaa se generaron 6925 GWh que representan un 3,4 % de la demanda de energa elctrica en Espaa, con un incremento del 47 % respecto al 2000
El objetivo para 2010 es llegar a 13000 MW con una produccin de 32 TWh anual, que representa el 12% de la demanda de energa elctrica en ese momento
Energa elica- Estado actual
Segn un estudio del World Watch Institute el nmero de puestos de trabajo producido por cada TWh anual de energa elica es de 542, mientras que en una clsica instalacin trmica es de unos 120.
Antiguamente, la disponibilidad de las mquinas, es decir el tiempo que no estaban averiadas o en mantenimiento, era del 60%, hoy es del 97%. El coste de la energa producida es cinco veces menor que hace 20 aos

Una forma usual de expresar dicha energa es mediante el factor de utilizacin:
Un buen valor del factor de utilizacin sera mayor que 0,3, y un valor aceptable superior a 0,25; aunque por supuesto esto depende de muchas circunstancias.Otra forma alternativa de expresar esta idea es mediante las horas equivalentes que se definen como:
