APPENDIX A
SUMMARY OF NARRATIVE EXPRESSIONS The Washington Park Reservoir site is a place serving the community. This place, besides providing us with safe drinking water, was meant to be experienced and enjoyed. The people who built the reservoir sought to bring to fruition all the forward-thinking ideals of the time. Our charge is to bring those stories to life in a way that is alive to us now, and to be able to experience them in a visceral way.
Conceptually we will approach the expression of the stories in the following ways:
CAPTURING TIME Using the idea of an element from the past preserved in amber, we will capture old images and impressions in amber glass.
MARKING TIME We will show how reservoir boundaries have changed and how technology has evolved.
MERGING THE PAST WITH THE PRESENT As the project restores and continues to use the gate houses for contemporary functions, we will reuse material from the site that is sensitive to the historic character the site.
SUMMARY OF OVERARCHING NARRATIVES
The structure of the interpretive storytelling encompasses a summary of the narratives at important entry points with supporting stories told throughout the Washington Park Reservoir site.
The summary will encompass:
The reason the reservoirs were built and why they are being altered.
The three main areas of signifi cance will include:
• Engineering
• Architecture
• Community and recreation
INTERPRETIVE CONCEPT

APPENDIX AINTERPRETIVE CONCEPT - SITE OVERVIEW
HISTORICAL TIMELINE IN RETAINING WALLA new semi-circular concrete retaining wall to replace the original Ransome-fi nish retaining wall at the northwest curve of Reservoir 3 in approximately the same size and location. The new retaining wall will utilize molds to replicate the Ransome fi nish and will also include a number of inserted amber-colored glass blocks similar in size as the “blocks” making up the original wall fi nish. The glass blocks will have information about the reservoir timeline, including design, construction, and overcoming challenges over the lifetime of the reservoirs. The overall glass block area is within a range of 6 to 20 square feet.
OLMSTED VIEWA viewpoint in the footpath along Sherwood Boulevard at the approximate location of the “Olmsted” view or “grand vista” as noted in the NR Nomination, with an interpretive panel / sign or element in the range of 60 to 120 square inches. Visual obstruction of the existing fence line will be minimized by relocating the fence at the view point down slope.
RESERVOIR BASIN 4 MARKERSSeries of vertical amber-colored glass posts encasing metal fence posts or a visual representation of fence posts, plus information about the markers representing the former west edge of Reservoir 4 basin. (4” x 4” x 4’, qty. 20 to 40).
An informational element at Pump House 1 will provide information about the Pelton Water Wheel pump known as “Thumper” (located inside the building). The information may be installed on amber-colored glass panes custom-made for the two new front (southside) windows of the pump station.

GLASS LIGHT BRICKSalvage, display, and interpret a section of Ransome glass and concrete panel from the fl oor of Gate House 3 to acknowledge this part of the engineering and design techniques noted in the National Register District Nomination. The concrete section to be displayed shall be at least one roughly trapezoidal section including its original round glass lights (as intact a section as possible). Interpretation is expected to also provide information about Ransome’s concrete reinforcing and fi nishing techniques used on site.

RESERVOIR 4 ENTRY AREATwo pavers located at the entry area near Reservoir 4 will include text and possibly graphics about the transportation and recreational aspects of the site. The overall paver area is within a range of 20 to 40 square feet.
Historic District
BURIED RESERVOIR
The PWB has entered a mitigation agreement with SHPO that will include installing of at least seven (7) educational elements, panels, or new components on the site with content providing interpretive information about the history of the facility. Each interpretive element or panel will be thoughtfully located on site in order to best relate to or “tell the story” of its content. All materials will be designed to be durable for long-term exterior exposure, and in harmony with existing historic materials and details used in the Historic District. Prior to fabrication, the PWB will provide draft layout, content, and proposed installation locations to the SHPO for comment and approval.
GRAND STAIRWAY BULL RUN MAP & INFORMATIONTwo pavers will be located at the Grand Stairway: one paver will have an overview map of the Bull Run water system designed by Isaac Smith, while the other will have descriptive text about the gravity feed design and other important design features. The map and text will be etched into the stone pav-ers area with a range of 20 to 40 square feet.
