Building the Career You Want
• In college Develop technical skills Develop interpersonal skills Develop a professional network Get an internship / co-op experience Find an entry level job
• Find a mentor• Continue education (diversification?)
Seminars Conferences Advanced degree
• Advancing / taking on new responsibility
Expect to have a few CareersExpect to have many jobs
Where to Begin?
• Classes are still #1 GPA is a bar Different companies set it at different places But it’s not the only thing
• The best-case scenario is the “inside track” Show up at company info-sessions Show up at career fairs Be open to friends and colleagues Ask good questions of guest speakers
• Resumes get lost in the shuffle, faces and stories might actually be remembered
9
A Can’t Miss Résumé
• Passed along by someone within the company• Perfect GPA• A wealth of diverse work experience• Proof of motivation & responsibility• Proof of independent accomplishments• Proof of team accomplishments• Quantified results
No one has thisEspecially not those fresh out of college
10
Your Résumé
Accurate, Honest, Brief
• Any work experience is good experience• Find something to include beyond classes
Club Volunteering opportunity Examples of teamwork
(horror stories of LED booklights gone awry!)
• Know your weaknesses and strengths
11
Résumé NO-NOs
• Too long: you’ve got about 10-seconds• Burying the lead
(great experience / talent @ bottom of page)• Not up to date• Not specific to job posting• Misleading or false (they’ll find out eventually)• Filled with fluff
“Excellent communication skills” “References available upon request”
12
What Does it Look Like?
• Generally Contact info Education Work experience Everything else
(skills, talents, associations, awards, maybe hobbies)
• Yours should be one page• Probably bullet points instead of full sentences• Probably subject headings• 100s of samples and 1000s of opinions online• Resources @ BC
