currentprotocolscurrentlyutilizeonlyoneofthesemeasuresofbalance.TheStabilityEvaluationTest(SET)protocol,utilizesthe6testingconditionsoftheBalanceErrorScoringSystem(BESS)toprovideanobjectiveanalysisoftheathlete’sfunctionalbalancecontrolbasedontheindividual’sposturalswayvelocity.TheLimitsofStability(LOS)testquantifiesimpairmentsinanindividual’sabilitytovolitionallydisplacetheircenterofgravity(COG)totheirstabilitylimitswithoutlosingbalance,however,theLOSisnotwidelyusedinconcussionprotocols.AcorrelationbetweentheLOStestandSEThasnotyetbeenestablishedinahealthy,non-concussedpopulation,thereforeitisunknowniftheLOSisaclinicallyrelevantmeasure.Objective:Todetermineifvolitionalandfunctionalbalancecontrolarecorrelated.Design:Prospectivecross-sectionaldesign.Setting:Universityresearchlaboratory.PatientsorOtherParticipants:Ninety-eighthealthyintercollegiateathletesparticipated(age20±1.6years,height185.60±7.16cm).Interventions:AllparticipantscompletedtheSETandLOStestingprotocolsontheNatusNeuroCom®VSRSportSystem.MainOutcomeMeasures:Reactiontime(sec),movementvelocity(deg/sec),endpointexcursion(%),maximalexcursion(%),anddirectionalcontrol(%)ontheLOStest;swayvelocity(deg/sec)ontheSET.Results:TheLOSwasnotcorrelatedwithSETforanyoftheoutcomes(ReactionTime,R=-0.068;MovementVelocityR=0.035;EndpointExcursionR=-0.116;MaximalExcursionR=-0.055).Conclusions:ThelackofsignificantcorrelationbetweenLOSandSETmayindicatedifferentconstructmeasures.Cliniciansshouldconsiderincorporatingbothmeasuresintocurrentconcussionprotocols.KeyWords:Concussion,Balance,VolitionalControl

DeterminationoftheBacterialSourceofRsaI

RsaIisarestrictionendonucleaseoriginallyreportedtobefromRhodobactersphaeroides.Sincethatfirstreport,thegenomeofR.sphaeroideshasbeensequenced,whichrevealedthebacteriumhasnogenecodingforRsaIinR.sphaeroides.Further,theinabilityoftheRsaIsourcestraintogrowunderphotosyntheticconditionsindicatedthatitwasmisidentified.ToconfirmthattheRsaIsourcestrainisnotfromR.sphaeroides,the16SrRNAgenewasamplifiedfrombothR.sphaeroidesandtheRsaIsourcestrain.ThealignmentoftheDNAsequencesprovedthatthesourceofRsaIisnotfromthespeciesR.sphaeroides.AfterfullgenomesequencingofthisnewbacteriumaninsilicorestrictionoftheDNAwithAseIwasperformed,whichfurtherconfirmedthattheseorganismsarenotofthesamespecies.

SynthesisofMetalOrganicFrameworksandIncorporationintoPlastics

Reducingenergyconsumptionhasbecomeamajorareaofresearchinthe20thcentury.Lightemittingmaterialshaveemergedasonepossibilitytosignificantlyreduceourcurrentenergyconsumption.Organiclightemittingdiodes(OLED)useorganicdyesandcanemitlightwhenanelectroniccurrentisintroduced.Whenorganicdyesbecometightlypackedtheynolongeremitlight.Thisisaproblemthatcanbefixedbyputtingorganicdyesintometalorganicframeworks.Metalorganicframeworks(MOFs)aremetalionclustersthatareconnectedbyorganiclinkers.Metalorganicframeworksareoptimalforourresearchduetotheirsolid-stateemissionproperties.ThestructureprovidedbyMOFseliminatesthepossibilityofthedyemoleculesbecomingtightlypackedresultinginquenchedemission.Weaimtoutilize3Dprinting,amethodoffabricatingplasticsintoanyshape,tocreateplasticdeviceswithembeddedMOFparticlesforpotentialuseinsolid-statelighting.

CRISPR/Cas9inducedmutationsofthewhitegeneofhaplo-Xanddiplo-XDrosophilamelanogaster

GenomeeditingistheprocessofchangingtheDNAstructureofagenebydeletingorreplacingnucleotides,orbyreplacinganoldgenewithanewDNAsequence.TheCRISPR/Cas9bacterialsystemhasrevolutionizedthegenomeeditingprocess.ThissystemconsistsofaCRISPRguideRNAthatlocatesthegeneofinterestandaCas9endonucleasethatcleavesthetargetedDNAtoformadouble-strandbreak.MistakesinDNArepairofthisbreakageoftenleadtobasedeletionsorinsertions.ThegoalofthisexperimentwastoshowthatbothCRISPRandCas9mustbepresenttoinducethewhiteeyedmutationandtesttheefficiencyoftheCRISPR/Cas9systembydeterminingifawhiteeyedmutationcanbeinducedatbothwhitegenesinwild-typefemaleswithattached-Xchromosomes.

PhenotypicAnalysisofArabidopsisthalianaMutantswithDelayedSenescence

Polyaminesarecompoundsthatarefoundinalllivingorganismsandarenecessaryforthecelltomaintainitsfunctionandlivelihood.Thesecompoundsplayaroleinplantsenescence,seedgermination,stressresponses,andotherdevelopmentalprocesses.Inplants,polyaminesarefoundgloballyandrecentworkhasshownthecharacterizationoftwopolyaminetransporterstobelocalizedintheER(OsPUT1gene)andthechloroplast(OsPUT3gene).Thisindicatesthatpolyaminesmustbetransportedacrossmembranestofulfillvarioustasks.AnumberofphenotypicassayswerecarriedoutusingmutantsofpolyaminetransportersinArabidopsisthalianatolearnmoreabouthowpolyaminesaffectplantgrowthanddevelopment.TransgenicplantsoverexpressingOsPUT1geneusingthe35Spromoter(35S::OsPUT1),amutantofanequivalentArabidopsisgene-put5(CS859607),andamutantofaplasmamembranelocalizedpolyaminetransporter(AtPDR11Δ)wereusedinthisstudy.Themutant(PDR11)startedflowering2daysaheadofwildtypeandCS859607A.thaliana,whereasthe35S::OsPUT1delayedinfloweringbyabout3days.Bothmutants,CS859607andPDR11,hadthinnerstemsthantheirWTcounterparts.Floweringtimesandbasalstemwidthdataprovideevidencethatpolyaminetransportersaffectfloweringtimeaswellasplantphenotypes.

cytotoxicity(KamelandSlattery,2005).AnarticlebyKhalesi,Beeftink,&Wijffels(2007)testedtheoptimumflowrateofSinulariaflexibilisinacontrolledlaboratorysettinganddeterminedthat11cms−1wasanoptimalflowratetomaximizethegrowthofthisspecies.Thepurposeofthisstudentprojectistoconfirmtheseresultsandtoimproveontheresearchersdesign.

Comparisonofgrowthrate,fertility,andmortalityincornsnakes,pantherophisguttatus,relativetotheoddgene

In2005,theBGSUHerpetariumdiscoveredanewpatternmorphintheircornsnake(Pantherophisguttatus)population,dubbedtheoddmorph.Itwasobservedthatsnakesbearingtheoddphenotypehadreducedfertilityandincreasedmortality,potentiallyduetotheline-breedinginvolvedinproliferatingthephenotype.Partofongoingresearch,thisstudywasconductedtoaddresswhetheroutcrossescouldestablishtheoddmorphseparatefromthefertilityandmortalityproblems,andalsotoquantifytheoddtrait’simpactongrowth.Arangeofbreedingcrosses(23total)wereestablishedtocomparereproductivesuccessrelativetotheoddtrait,andoverallmortalityrecordswereanalyzed.Weightswererecordedweeklyoveraperiodofseveralmonthstocomparethegrowthrateofyearlingcornsnakesrelativetotheirrelationshipwithodd.Outcrosses,particularlywherethefemalesnakewasodd,continuedtoshowlowreproductivesuccess,producingfewviableeggs.Weightgainwassignificantlydifferent,withunrelatedsnakesgrowingmorerapidlythanoddsnakes.Itissuspectedthatthecontinuedlackofsuccesswithoddfemalesislinkedtothedifficultyinreachingbreedingweight.Thisreducestheirabilitytoimpartnutrientstopotentialoffspring,andcanleadtohigherincidenceofdystocia-atypicallyfatalinabilitytopasstheireggs.

Fertilityandmortalityincornsnakeswiththe“odd”trait

In2005,theBGSUHerpetariumdiscoveredaphenotypicvariationincornsnakes(Pantherophisguttatusguttatus)calledodd.Studieshavefoundthatthistraitisautosomalrecessiveandaffectsbothcolorandpattern;however,anecdotalevidenceindicatedthatoddcornsnakesdidnotreproduceaswellanddiedmorefrequentlythannon-oddcornsnakes.Fertilityandmortalityratesweremeasuredinoddandnon-oddcornsnakestosubstantiatetheseobservations,withtheexpectationthatoddcornsnakeswouldexhibitlowerfertilityandhighermortality.Sixtyeightnon-oddmaleandnon-oddfemale,23oddmaleandnon-oddfemale,13non-oddmaleandoddfemale,andeightoddmaleandoddfemalecrosseswereanalyzed.Hatchratesinclutcheslaidbyoddfemaleswerelowerthan10%(19outof250eggs).Crosseswithnon-oddfemales,evenwithoddmales,exhibitedgreaterhatchratesrangingbetween50-60%(834outof1371eggs).Mortalitydatashowedthat,of65snakesthathavediedsincethebeginningoftheoddstudyin2005,31%wereoddand27%werenon-odd.Whilemorefemales(N=41)thanmalesdied,thistrendwasconsistentbetweenoddandnon-oddfemales.Evidencefailstosupportthatoddsnakesexhibitgreatermortality,butdoessupportthatoddfemalesexhibitlowerfertility.Futurestudiesareinplacetoexaminetheviabilityofoffspringbornfromoddandnon-oddpairs,andtosetupoutcrossestodetermineiffemaleoddfertilityisaconsequenceofinbreeding.

Urbanizationtransformsnaturallandscapesintobuiltenvironments,causingchangesinecologicalprocessesandcommunities.Arthropodsareanimportantgroupoforganismsthatperformavarietyoffunctionalrolesinecosystemsaspollinators,decomposers,andpredators,andcanbefoundationalinstructuringfoodwebs.Thegoalofthisstudywastoidentifyhowurbanizationinfluencesthecompositionofinsectcommunitiesalonganurban-suburban-ruralgradient.Wepredictedthatinsectdiversityandabundancewouldrespondstronglytopercent

impervioussurface,ameasurementofurbanization.Insectsweresampledfrom30sitesalonganurbanizationgradientinToledo,OHduringJulyandAugust2016,usingpantraps,andavarietyofpredictorvariableswererecordedateachsite.Herewefocusonhowlandcoverandimpervioussurfaceinfluencetheabundanceofordersofinsects.Wesampledandidentifiedatotalof2372individualsspanning9orders.Resultsindicatethattwopollinatortaxa,HymenopteraandLepidoptera,werenegativelyaffectedbyurbanization.Diversitydeclinedwithherbaceouscover,butwerenotassociatedwithurbanization.Communitycompositionwassignificantlyaffectedbyimpervioussurface,canopycover,floweringplants,anddistancetocitycenter.Theseresultsprovideinsightforunderstandinghowenvironmentalfactorsalterpollinatorsinurbanenvironments.

Antibioticresistanceisahottopicintheworldofmicrobiologyduetoitsinvolvementinbothclinicalandenvironmentalmicrobiology.Thebacteriumatthefocusofthisstudy,Serratiamarcescens,isclassifiedasanopportunisticpathogen;itaffectspatientswhohavealreadydebilitatedimmunesystemsandisknowntoshowalargespectrumofantibioticresistance.Polymerasechainreaction(PCR)methodswerefirstusedon11confirmedS.marcescensenvironmentalisolatestoobservethepresenceorabsenceofcommonbeta-lactamasegenes,aresistancemechanismusedagainstcertainclassesofantibiotics.Antibioticsensitivitytestswerethencarriedoutforeachisolateat30˚Cand37˚Ctoobservewhethertemperatureandpigmentproductionaffectedantibioticresistance.Resistancespectrumsofeachisolatewerealsodeterminedfromthistest.PCRresultsindicatedthatcommonbeta-lactamasesmaybepresentinsomeoftheisolates.Temperatureandpigmentproductiondidnotsignificantlyaffectantibioticresistancepatterns,butarangeofresponsestotheantibioticswasobserved.Afterlookingattheresistancespectrumsofeachisolate,onlythreeofeightantibioticscouldinhibitgrowthofall13isolatesatbothtemperatures.S.marcescensprovedtobeaveryinterestingbacteriumthatshowedlargediversityofresistancepatternsamongtheisolates,whichwasconsistentwiththeliteratureaboutthisspecies.Thisunpredictabilityanditsstatusasanopportunisticpathogencouldstronglyimpacttheimmunocompromisedcommunity.Furtherstudiesneedtobedonetolookatthisspecies’resistancemechanismsmoreclosely.

Neuralstemcells(NSCs)areself-renewingcellsthatcanalsogiverisetoallothercelltypesinthenervoussystemupondifferentiation.CurrentlytherearetwomainsitesinthebrainthatareknowntocontainNSCs;thesubventricularzone(SVZ)ofthelateralventriclesandthedentategyrus(DG)ofthehippocampus.However,thereisevidencethatNSCsmayalsobefoundinseveralotherbrainregionsincludingthehypothalamus.Ourprimaryobjectiveofthisprojectwastofurthercharacterizethepresenceofstem-likecellsinthesuprachiasmaticnucleus(SCN)ofthehypothalamus.TheSCNcontainsthemastercircadianclockofthebodythatregulatesmanydailyrhythmsinactivityandphysiology.WeisolatedthepairedSCNregionsfromsectionsofadultmousebrainandculturedtheminamediumthatfavorsthegrowthofstemcells.Totestforthepresenceofstemcellmarkersweusedimmunocytochemistryandconfocalmicroscopyandappliedimagingsoftwareforcountingindividualcells.TheexplantculturesrevealedthattheSCNcontainsnumerouscellsthatarepositivefortheproteinmusashi-2(MSI2),suggestingthepresenceofstem-likecells.WeconcludedthatthisRNA-bindingproteinthatregulatesawiderangeofproteinexpressionin

Steelheadtrout(Oncorhynchusmykiss)havebeenshowntoincorporateorswitchtovateriteintotheirotolithsduringdevelopment.Becausevateriteisalessdenseandlargervariantofcalciumcarbonate,thiscanresultinareductionintheauditoryacuityofanindividual.Aswell,individualsthatincorporatevateriteintotheirotolithsarenotusedinotolithmicrochemistryanalysesbecauseofthevastdifferencesintheuptakeofelementsbetweenaragoniteandvaterite.About50%ofallhatcheryraisedsteelheadtroutincorporateorswitchtovateriteintheirlifetime,therefore,50%ofsamplescollectedarenotusedinotolithmicrochemistryanalyses.Todecreasethenumberofsampleswasted,apartitioncoefficientwasdevelopedthatwouldenableelementalconcentrationsfromavateriteotolithtobeconvertedtoelementalconcentrationsfromanaragoniteotolith.Thiswasconfirmedbyplottingaragoniteandvateriteelementalconcentrationsagainstelementalconcentrationsinthewater.ItwasfoundthattheKdvaluesforeachhatcheryweresignificantlydifferentbasedonvariationinenvironmentalfactorssuchasdietandwatersources,thustheKdvalueswerenotuniversal.However,itwasfoundthatbasedonthewaterchemistry,vateritevaluescouldstillbeconvertedtoaragonitevalues,andthusthosesamplesdonothavetobewastedandcanbeincorporatedintootolithmicrochemistryanalyses.

Theemergenceofpathogensresistanttoallknownantibioticshasbecomeaseriousandprevalentproblem.In2050,deathsfromantibioticresistancebacteriaintheU.S.aloneispredictedtobegreaterthan300,000peryearandtheleadingcauseofdeathworldwide.Unfortunately,pharmaceuticalcompanieshavestoppedresearchinganddevelopingnewdrugsduetolowprofitabilityleavingantibioticdiscoverytoresearchlaboratories.Tocombatthisimminentglobalthreat,theWildschuttelabusesgeneticallydiverseenvironmentalbacteria,ofthegenusPseudomonas,asasourcefornovelantibiotics.WehypothesizethatPseudomonasfromdifferentsolid-stateandliquidenvironments,haveevolvedtheabilitytoproducediversecompoundsthatinhibitpathogenicbacteriathatareadaptedtoahumanhost.Totestthishypothesis,strainswereisolatedfromsoilinBowlingGreen,OHandfreshwaterlakeswithinHungaryandGermanyandcharacterizedusingthegyrBgeneandantagonisticactivity.576environmentalsoilandwater-derivedPseudomonasstrainswerecompetedagainstapanelof20differentopportunistichumanlungadaptedpathogensfromcysticfibrosispatients,creatingatotalof11,520interactionsamongthestrains.Outoftheseinteractions,323ofthe576strainsweresuccessfulininhibitingpathogenicbacteria.Thus,Pseudomonasstrainsfromdiverseenvironmentsdirectlyinhibitthegrowthofhost-adaptedpathogens.Futureworkinvolvesusingtransposonmutagenesistoidentifygenesintheenvironmentalstrainsthatencodeantibioticcompounds.

activistscontinuetogalvanizethepublic’ssupportforanti-racismandsocialjustice.Manyactivistsmeasuretheirsuccessthroughsocialmediaanalytics,suchashowmanylikesorsharesthatcontenthasreceived.Althoughthesemeasurementsmayindicatethatsocialmediausershaveseenandinteractedwiththeactivists’onlinecontent,itdoesnotrevealtheextenttowhichthesocialmediamessagesinfluencedpeople’sissue-specificbeliefsandattitudes.Therefore,thisstudyaimedtoexamineandmeasurehowpersuasivesocialmediamessageschangepeople’sattitudesregardingimmigrationintheUnitedStates.Drawingfromtheframeworkofsocialjudgmenttheory,516U.S.adultswererandomlyassignedtoreadapositive,neutral,ornegativesocialmediamessageaboutimmigrationthatwaspostedbyasocialmediaactivistwithahighorlowlevelofperceivedcredibility.Althoughthesocialmediamessagesdidnotsystematicallyalterindividuals’attitudinalpositions,theresultsindicatedthatparticipants’politicalideology,knowledgeaboutcurrentU.S.immigrationissues,andego-involvementwerepredictiveoftheirattitudesaboutimmigration.Implications,limitations,andfuturedirectionsforresearchareprovided.

Researchinadultswithautismspectrumdisorder(ASD)indicatesaneedforinterventionsthatcanassistwiththeseindividuals’socialcommunication,inordertoreversethepsychosocialtollthatcanresultfromtheseimpairments.Apilotfeasibilitystudy(Hewitt&Kelliher,n.d.)wasconductedtoinvestigatetheinterventionofvideomodelingforadultswithASD,anddatafromthatstudywasusedforthiscurrentstudy.Thisstudyundertooktodevelopmeasuresthatcouldbevalidandreliabletomeasurechangeinresponsetosocialcommunicationintervention,andthatcouldbeappliedinthefutureforotherstudies.Codingmeasuresweredeveloped,appliedtothepreviousstudy’svideos,andparticipantperformancewascomparedpre-interventiontopost-intervention.Also,participantperformancewascomparedtomodelperformance.Lastly,participants’perceptionsofASDandinterventionsforASDwerenotedaswell.Findingsfromthisstudyindicatewaysinwhichinterventionsmaybedesignedtobestmeettheneedsofeachindividual.

Classroomteachersareathighriskfordevelopingvoiceproblemsandmayexperiencepositivebenefitsfromvocalhealtheducation.Lessisknownabouttheexperiencesofstudentteachers.Theobjectiveofthestudywastodetermineifvocalhygieneeducationaffectsthestudentteachers’vocalknowledge,vocalhabits,voicequality,andtheirself-perceptionoftheirvoice.Eightfemaleeducationstudents,whowerestudentteachingthesemesterofthestudy,wererandomizedintoeithertheExperimentalGroup(whoreceivedvocalhealthinformationbeforetheirstudentteachingsemester)ortheControlGroup.Bothgroupswereassessedusingabatteryofqualitativeandquantitativeinstrumentsatthebeginning,middle,andendofthesemester.TherewerenostatisticallysignificantdifferencesbetweentheExperimentalGroupandtheControlGrouponvocalhygieneknowledge,vocalhygienehabits,VHI-10score,andallCAPE-Vratings.Analysisoftheindividualdifferences,however,indicatesthatknowledgeofvocalhealthmayinfluenceothervariablesrelatedtovocalhealth.AnalysisofthequalitativedataindicatesthatsevenoftheeightstudentteachersexperiencedproblemswiththeirvoiceandthatallfourmembersoftheControlGroupwantedinformationaboutvocalhealth.Duetopotentiallimitationsofthestudy,theresearcherswerenotabletodeterminewhethereducationalinformationresultedinfewerincidencesofvoiceproblems,butthedatasuggest,similartoclassroomteachers,thatstudentteachersareathighriskfordevelopingvoiceproblemsduringtheirstudentteachingpracticumandtheytoomaybenefitfrominformationonpreventionofvoiceproblems.

Risaprogramminglanguagecommonlyusedforstatisticalcomputingandgraphicaldisplays.Itisoftenusedinthefieldofdatascienceforbigdataanalytics.Datascienceiscommonlythoughtofasbeingusedmoreforbusinessanalyticsorsportsanalytics,butitcanbeusedinavarietyoffields.Overthecourseofasemester,wehavebeenusingRinaRussianLiteratureclasstoanalyzeavarietyoftexts.Thisisdonethroughaprocesscalledtextmining.Textminingisawayofanalyzingandgettingrelevantinformationfromtexts.Thisincludescategorizinginformation,makinglinksbetweendifferentdocuments,andprovidingvisualizationmethods.Itallowsustofindpatternsinthetextsanddrawconclusionsfromthosepatterns.Inthiscourse,wefocusedonwordfrequencyandmakingwordcloudsbasedoffofthatfrequency.Throughmakingwordclouds,weareabletoseethemostfrequentwordsinatextbecausetheyarelargerandofteninadifferentcolor.WhenmakingwordcloudsinR,therearemanyoptionsofhowthecloudcanbeformatted.Itgivesstudentsalotofchoices,andtheycanchangeafewofthesettingstomakethecloudeasiertounderstand.Weareshowingstudentsthatthereissomuchmoretoliteraturethatjustthesentencestheyarereading.Bycomparingwordcloudsoftwodifferenttexts,theycanseeavarietyofdifferenceseveniftheyhadnotreadthetext.Theycouldseethemaincharacter,thedifferenceincommonpronouns,orevendeterminethegenrefromlookingatthefrequentwords.Inthecourse,wefocusedonmicroanalysis,oranalyzingonlyoneortwotextsatatime,butRalsoofferstheabilitytomacroanalyze.Macroanalysisiswhenyouhavetheabilitytoanalyzetextswithinthecontextofthousandsofothertexts.Lookingatayearsworthoftextsinacertaincountrycanrevealwhatpronounsweremorecommontouseandwhatgenresweremorepopular.Findingthesetrendscangiveyouasenseofwhatthecountrywaslikeatthattimeoriftherewereanydisastersorcelebrationsinthecountrythatcouldhavelendtothosetrends.Whilewearenotdoingthismacroanalysiscurrently,doingmicroanalysispreparesusforthepossibilityofdoinglarger-scaletextmininginthefuture.

smellacuity.Methods:Collegefreshmen(n=60),acohortatriskformodestweightgain,wereassesseduponarrivaltocampusand5monthslater.Weight,BMI,andbodyfatpercent(%BF)weremeasured.Intensityratingsforgraded,suprathresholdconcentrationsofsweet(n=3)andsalty(n=3)solutions,aswellasasuprathresholdorangeodorwereassessed.Mann-Whitney-Utestswereusedtoindicatechangefrombaselinetofollow-up.Spearmancorrelationcoefficientswereusedtoidentifyassociationsbetweenvariables.Results:Sixtyparticipants(82%female,92%white,18.1±0.3years)completedtesting.BMI(22.9±3.8to23.6±4.1kg/m2)and%BF(24.5±9.6to27.1±9.1%)increasedatfollow-up(p<0.001forboth).Weightgain(62.8±12.8to64.6±13.7kg,range-2.9to+9.1kg)occurredin79%ofparticipants.Nochangesintasteintensityforlow,medium,andhighconcentrationsofsweetorsaltysolutionswereobserved.Nochangeinsmellintensitywasobservedovertime,althoughsmellintensityatfollow-upwasnegativelyassociatedwithBMI(r=-0.36,p=0.048).Conclusions:Modestweightgainincollegefreshmendidnotinfluencetasteacuity.Lackofchangeinintensityratingsmayrelatetouseofsuprathresholdconcentrationsratherthandetectionthresholds,orrecruitmentofapredominantlyleanpopulation.LearningOutcome:Participantswillbeabletodiscusstheinfluenceofweightchangeontasteandsmellacuity.

Background:Duringcollegestudents’firstyearofschool,theyareexposedtomanydifferentfactorsthatinfluencetheirriskofcardiovasculardisease.Methods:Firstyearcollegestudentswereenrolledinfivesectionsofaseminarcoursethatincludedhealthassessmentsatthebeginningandendofthefallsemester.Seventy-threeof91students(80.2%)consentedtohavetheirdatausedforresearchpurposes.Physicalmeasuresincludedweight,height,bodyfatpercent,andbloodpressure.Onlinequestionnairesassessedalcoholconsumptionandstress.Pairedt-testswereconductedtoassesschangesfromthebeginningtotheendofthesemester.Results:Bodymassindex(calculatedaskg/m2),bodyfatpercent,alcoholconsumption,andself-reportedstressincreasedduringthesemester(p<0.05forall).Systolicbloodpressuretendedtoincrease(p=0.080),whilediastolicbloodpressuredidnotchangeduringthesemester.Attheendoftheirfirstcollegesemester,healthriskwasidentifiedin44.1%,39.4%,82.6%,and35.8%ofstudentsbasedonhighbodymassindex,bodyfatpercent,bloodpressure,alcoholconsumption,respectively.Discussion:Thisstudyhasprovidedamorecomprehensiveunderstandingoftherisksforcardiovasculardiseaseamongcollege-agedstudents.The

MuscleDysmorphiaandDisorderedEatinginUndergraduateStudentExercisersandNon-ExercisersAuthor(s):E.Gill,M.Drees,T.Lechner,C.Hamady,M.Ludy;BowlingGreenStateUniversityLearningOutcome:Participantswillbeabletoidentifythedifferencesinmuscledysmorphiaanddisorderedeatingamongundergraduatestudentexercisersandnon-exercisers.Background:Bodydissatisfaction,characterizedbynegativeself-evaluationofbodyweightand/orshape,iscommonamongyoungadults.Compensatoryself-destructivebehaviors,suchasexcessiveexerciseand/ordisorderedeating,oftenoccur.Thisstudy’spurposewastocharacterizetheprevalenceofmuscledysmorphiaanddisorderedeatingamongcollegestudentexercisersandnon-exercisers.Methods:Undergraduates(n=149,48.3%female,age21.1±4.4years,BMI25.0±4.4kg/m2)wererecruitedfromtheunionandrecreationcenteratalarge,MidwesternuniversityandaskedtocompletetheMuscleDysmorphicDisorderInventory(MDDI)andEatingAttitudesTest(EAT-26).Exercisers(n=93)weredefinedas≥150minutesperweekpurposefulphysicalactivity.Results:Amongbothexercisersandnon-exercisers(445.8±214.0and36.9±85.1minutespurposefulexerciseperweek,respectively),one-thirdwereidentifiedashavingmuscledysmorphia(basedonMDDI)and/ordisorderedeating(basedonEAT-26).Disorderedeatingwasidentifiedmorecommonlyamongnon-exercisers(33.9%)thanexercisers(22.6%).Muscledysmorphiawasonlyidentifiedamongexercisers(19.4%),with8.6%alsoidentifiedwithdisorderedeating.Muscledysmorphiawasmorecommoninmales(19.5%)thanfemales(4.2%),whereasdisorderedeatingwasmorecommoninfemales(30.6%)thanmales(23.4%).Conclusions:Theprevalenceofmuscledysmorphiaanddisorderedeatingvaryamongcollege-agedexercisersandnon-exercisers.Targetededucationalmessagesforcollegeexercisersshouldincludecontentfocusedonbothmusclesizeandeatinghabits,whilecontentfornon-exercisersshouldfocusmoreoneatinghabits.FundingDisclosure:None

Background:Dieteticsstudentsbenefitfromcareercoaching,rolemodeling,andpeernetworking.However,suchmentorshipisoftensacrificedtocoveracademicmaterial.Thisinnovationinvolvedclass-basedmentoringinwhichgraduatestudentsandfacultyinteractedwithundergraduatestofacilitateself-reflection,encourageprogrammatic/professionalquestions,andengageinrelationship-buildingactivities.Methods:Twenty-fiveseniorsinacapstonecourseand49newmajorsinanintroductorycourseparticipatedinmentoringduring4regularclassdays.Activitiesweredesignedandconductedby7graduatestudentsand2faculty,focusingonperceivedareasofstudentweakness.Anend-of-semestersurveywascompleted.Results:Feedbackwaspositivewithallmentorshipactivitiesscoring≥3.1±0.8ona4-ptLikertscale.Qualitativethemesincluded:(1)betterunderstandingofcollege/internshipexpectations,(2)abilitytodiscernpersonalstrengths/weaknessesandleveragethemprofessionally,and(3)inspirationfromgraduatestudentinteractions.Specifically,seniorsnotedbenefitfromdiscussingDICAS,internships,andmaster’sprograms.Newmajorsagreed,alsoexpressinggreatappreciationforactivitiesrequiringself-reflectionandpromotingpersonalgrowth.Conclusions:Incorporatingmentoringdaysintoundergraduatedieteticsprogramsatbothintroductoryandcapstonelevelspresentsaviableresourcefor(1)encouragingcollaborationandnetworkingamongpeersandfaculty,(2)providinganavenueforself-reflectionandpersonalgrowth,and(3)empoweringstudentstoutilizebothinternalandexternalresourcesandskillstoattaintheirprofessionalpath.

Thegoalofthisresearchwastoobservewhetherornottheincubationtemperatureimpactedthegrowthand/orcolorationingeckosoftheRhacodactylusgenus.Threespecieswereusedintheresearch:R.ciliatus,R.auriculatus,andR.chahoua.Colorchangehasbeenobservedinleopardgeckos(Eublepharismacularius)thatwereincubatedatdifferenttemperaturesand,insomespecies,incubationtemperatureplaysaroleindeterminingthesexofthehatchlings.Sexofthesegeckoswasnotmonitoredduetoimmaturity.Ourhypothesiswasthatgeckosincubatedatahighertemperaturewouldhavealowerhatchweightandlightercoloration.Totestourhypothesis,eggslaidinclutchesoftwoweresplitbetweenincubatorsat26˚Cand30˚C.Eachincubatorhadanighttimedropintemperaturewhichwasshowninapreviousstudytoincreasesurvival.Uponhatching,thegeckoswerephotographed,measured,andweighed.Measurementsincludedboththesnout-ventlengthandtotallengthofeachanimal.Thephotographsandmeasurementsweretakeneveryotherweekafterthehatchdatetotracktheirprogress.Asmallrulerwithacolorchartwaspresentineachphotographtoensurestandardizationofcolor.Alargersamplesizeisneededtoformdefinitiveconclusions,butsofar,R.auriculatushasexhibitedagraduallighteningofcoloramongallgeckosandthoseincubatedat30˚Chatcheddarker.Weightdidnotdifferbetweengroups.Thus,theoriginalhypothesiswasnotsupported.However,wediscoveredanoticeabledifferenceinincubationdurationandsurvivalamonggeckosincubatedatdifferenttemperatures.

InvestigatingSpatialDriversofPossibleHeatIslandsinNorthwestOhio

Humanshavefundamentallyalteredtheentirelandscapeoftheplanet,withsomeestimatessuggestingthat>75%oftheEarth’ssurfaceiscomprisedofanthropogeniclandscapes.Humanalteredlandscapeshaveverydifferentthermalpropertiesthannaturallandscapes.Forexampletheamountofimpervioussurfacealonganurbantonaturalvegetationgradient,resultedinurbanareasbeing17%warmer(+2.1C°)thanruralandnaturalareas.WeusedONSETHobologgerstomonitorsurfacetemperatureat~30naturalvegetationremnantsembeddedalongagradientofanthropogenictonaturaladjacentlandusesthroughoutWoodandLucasCounties.Loggersmeasuredsurfacetemperatureat30minuteintervalsfromMay-November,2016.Wefoundthatthemaxandmintemperaturesofurbanandnaturalareasweresimilar.MeanofUrbanmax,min=50.26,4.93andagriculturemax,min=50.22,4.48.ThismakessincebecausethenaturalareatestedwastheOakOpeningsembeddedwithintheToledoMetropolitanarea.However,thevarianceoftheurbanareaismuchhigher,whichcouldleadtomicroclimatesandincreasedintensityofstormspassingthroughthearea.Inaddition,wemeasuredlocalvegetationstructureatfourdiscretetimeperiodsateachtemperatureloggingstationusingmodifiedDuabnemeirFramesandRobelPoles.Wefoundthatinvasivespeciespercentagesinnaturalareasarearound33%butthisnumberclimbstoaround50-75%onlandadjacenttourbanandagricultureland.Wefoundthatmaxvsnatandc4vsvarhadaweakpositivecorrelation(rvaluesof.07and.09respectively).Additionally,varvs.naturalhadaweaknegativecorrelation(rvalueof-.03).Thevorvsvarandvorvsmaxtempbothhadstrongpositivecorrelations(bothrvaluesbeing.35).Thissuggeststhathighernaturaldensitiesandvegetationdensitieshaveastrongeffectonthesurfacetemperatureoftheland.Thisdatasuggestthattheanthropogeniclandscapehasastronginfluenceonlocaltemperaturebutnaturalvegetationdensitycanreducethemagnitudeoftheseimpacts,furtherhighlightingtheimportanceofurbangreenspaces.

Thefocusofthisprojectisonthestudiedtheimpactofskincomplexionincolonialandpost-colonialMexico.Thereisanongoingdebatebetweenhistoriansovertheimportanceofcastalabelsincolonialandpost-colonialMexico.ThesecastalabelsgiventothecitizensofNewSpain(colonialMexico)werefromaracialhierarchysystemimplementedbytheSpanish.Preliminaryresearchshowedthatcomplexionswereasimportantindeterminingone’splaceinsociety,andinthemilitaryasthecastalabelswas.Totestthistheory;acomprehensiveanalysiswasrequiredofmilitarydata.Thisprojectpresents,andanalyzestheresultsofthisstudy.Themilitarydatausedtofurtherstudythistopicwererecruitmentrecordscalledfiliaciones.Overseventhousandmilitaryrecordswereanalyzed.Thesedocumentsincludeasoldier’sskincomplexionandtheircastaposition/label.Thefirstobjectiveoftheprojectwastocategorizethemultitudeofcomplexionslisted.Thesecondobjectivewastooutlinetheguidelinesfortheproject.Thethirdobjectivewastostudytheresultsoftheresearchconductedonthefiliaciones.Acrosssectionstudywasconductedbetweenasoldier’scomplexionandtherelationtovdraftrates,occupationalskills,andliteracyrate.Theconstantgapinallofthesecategoriesimpliesthattherewasalackofanefforttoimprovetheconditionsforsoldiersofblackandbrownskincomplexionsovertime.Theinequalitiesinthesecategoriesalsoshowthatcomplexionswereasimportantascastalabelswere.Thisprojectcontributestothecultural,andmilitaryhistoryofMexico.

Variablestarsarestarswhoseluminosities,ortotallightoutputs,fluctuate.Thereisaparticularsetofvariablestarswithinaglobularstarcluster,Messier30(M30forshort),thathasbeenofinteresttotheBGSUastronomycommunity.ThisclusterhasbeenobservedgreatlyintheSouthernhemispherebuthasbeenneglectedinregardstoobservationinourregionduetoitsproximitytothehorizon.Since1975,therehavebeenbeenfivestudiesbasedaroundM30,performedbyTerzanandRutily(1975),PietrukowiczandKaluzny(2004),Smitka(2007),Lesh(2013),andKains(2013).Severalofthesestudiessoughttodeterminetheperiodsofthefluctuationsinthevariablestars,orthetimebetweenfluctuations.Thoughtheywerelookingatthesamestars,theyuseddifferentmethodsandcalculateddifferentperiods.Fromthisarisesaneedtoreevaluatethedataavailableandfindthebestpossibleperiods.AsimilarproblemexistsforglobularclusterNGC6388,forwhichthereisdatapresentfromanassortmentofsources,whiletheperiodsofseveralvariablestarsareunknown.Toapproachthisproblem,VStar,aperiodfindingprogram,wasusedtoanalyzethedata.LookingattheLeshdata,Kains’periodsseemedtobeveryconsistentwiththeVStarresults,whereastheperiodsfoundbyPietrukowiczandKaluznywerelessso.Ihypothesizethatthisisbecausetheupdatesinperiod-findingtechnologyinthenineyearsbetweenthepublishingofthesetwoarticlesallowedKains,etal.tobemoreaccurateandprecise.Foreightoftheelevenstars(73%)thatwereanalyzedthroughVStar,aconclusiveperiodwasfoundandconfirmed.Fortheremainingthree,Kains’periodwasidentifiedintheVStarperiodresults,butwasnotdisplayedastheprimaryperiod.ForNGC6388,thedatafortheVandIfilterswerefoundtobeveryconsistent,producingthesamemainperiodforbothsetsofdataoneachstar.Thisisverypositive,aswellasmoderatelyrareresult.Ialsofoundthatseveralofthestarsmaybemulti-periodic.ThismeansthatwhiletheperiodresultspresentedbyVStarmayshowseveralpotentialperiods,themodelthatfitthedatabestwasacombinationofmorethanoneperiod.Thisisaveryimportantdiscoveryastheperiod-findingmethodthathadbeenpreviouslyusedonlyallowedtheusertofindthemainperiod.Thepossibilitywasalsoexploredforawaytoderivea"merit"valuefortheperiodofavariablestarbasedonthecorrelationoftheVStarperiodresultsforthetwofiltersofastar.Aconclusiveresultwasnotproduced,butafirmhypothesisstands.ThiscanbeexploredusingaprogrammingsoftwarelikePython.WhenanalyzingtheSmitkadatainVStar,therewassolittledatathatitwasdifficulttotellwhereonemodelwasbetterorworsethananother.Thephaseplotsfitthedatawell,butwerenotdrasticallydifferentfromonetoanother.Thiscouldpossiblybeimprovedbynarrowingtherangeoftheperiodsearch,andwillrequiremoreattentionbeforeaconclusionisreached.TheperiodsthatSmitkastatedinhisthesisweremuchclosertotheKainsperiodsthanthosethatwerefoundinVStar,soitisnotcertainwhetherVStarisastrongenoughprogramforsmallerdatasets.OtherprogressionsmadeincludetakingtheaperturephotometryforLesh,SmitkaandCT10datasets.Thiswillallowthedatatobecalibratedsuchthatstandardunitmagnitudesareused.Thestars

ParentingStylesandMother-ChildRelationshipQuality

Parentingstylesplayaninfluential,butvarying,roleinparent-childrelationshipquality.Thisstudyfocusesonmother-childclosenessandconflictandhowbothoftheserelationship-qualityindicatorsareshapedbypermissiveandauthoritativeparentingstyles.Ianalyzedataaboutmother’sparentalbehaviorandrelationshipqualitywithchildren,asreportedbymothersofthirdgradechildrenintheStudyofEarlyChildcareandYouthDevelopment(N=1,007).Onaverage,highlypermissivemothershavegreaterconflictandlessclosenesswiththeirchild.Incontrast,highlyauthoritativemothershavelessconflictandgreaterclosenesswiththeirchild.Authoritativeparentingrelatestolessconflictwiththeirchildonlyamongmotherswithcollegeeducation,andauthoritativeparentingrelatestomother-childclosenessregardlessofmothers’levelsofeducation.Permissiveparentingisrelatedtoconflictonlyamongmotherswithoutcollegeeducation,and,inversely,mothers’permissiveparentingrelatestomoreclosenessonlyamongmotherswithcollegeeducation.Theseresultssuggestthatauthoritativeparentingstyles,regardlessofeducationlevel,fostercloserandmorepeacefulparent-childrelationships.

ThisresearchinvestigatesthepervasivenessofbothpoliticalcynicismandAmericanexceptionalismwithinAmericansociety.Throughouthistory,therehasbeenaninteractionbetweenthepublic'sfeelingsofAmericanexceptionalismandcynicismintheUnitedStates,startingatthenation’sfoundingandcontinuingintorecenttimes(Chaloupka,1999).UsingtheAmericanNationalElectionStudies’2012surveyontrustingovernment(n=5,914),Iexaminetherelationshipbetweendistrustingovernment(aproxyforpoliticalcynicism)andfeelingsofAmericanexceptionalism.ResultsshowasignificantrelationshipbetweencynicismandfeelingsofAmericanexceptionalismintheUnitedStates,withthosewhoreportlowtrustalsoreportinggreaterfeelingsofAmericanexceptionalism,ascomparedtothosewithmediumandhightrustingovernment.Theseassociationsarestrongerforrespondentswhoreporthighlevelsofsatisfactionwiththefederalgovernment.TheresultssuggestthatfeelingsofpoliticalcynicismandAmericanexceptionalismexistintandeminAmericanpublicopinion.

PreventingProtestMobilizationinAuthoritativeStates:UsingCourtstoUpholdAssociationRights

Decidingtoparticipateinapoliticalprotestorsocialmovementisnotonethatismadelightly.Individualsfacedwiththechoicetospeakoutagainsttheirgovernanceorliveunderpoliciesorlawstheydisagreewithdonotsimplychoosetomarchinthestreetswithoutsignificantconsideration.Thechoicetoprotest—ordissent—isinfluencedbymanyfactors,includingwhetherthegovernmentislikelytorespondwithforceorrepression(Davenportetal.,2005;Davenport,1995;Davenport2007;Moore,2000;DannemanandRitter,2014;Ritter,2014),thepolitical,institutional,orsocialstructureofthesystemtheylivein(Tarrow,1994),andtheissuesatstakeintheprotest.Oneunderstudiedareaofprotestishowprotestsareshapedoraffectedbytheindependenceofthejudicialsystem.Twopossibleexplanationsofthisphenomenoncurrentlyexist.Thefirstschoolofresearchsuggeststhatwhenpoliticaloppositiongroupshavelessrestrictedaccesstoindependentcourtsystemsforlegalrectification,theywillbemoreprobabletoaddresstheirgrievanceswiththestatethroughthecourtsystemratherthanprotest.Innon-democraticregimes,wherepoliticalprotestsareespeciallyriskyforindividuals,otherpoliticalnominallyindependentinstitutionshavebeenshowntoreduceconflictandminimizeoppositionmovements.Thecreationofpoliticalpartiesandlegislatureshasbeenassociatedwithincreasedtenureofauthoritarianregimesandsideliningpoliticaloppositionmovements(Lust-Okar,2005;Geddes,2006;Haber,2006;Gandhi,2008;Blaydes,2011;FrantzandEzrow,2011).Asimilarargumentcanbemadeaboutpartiallyindependentjudiciaries.Ifthecourtsystemisindependent,itprovidesanavenueforpeopletohavetheirgrievancesaddressedwithouthavingtotaketheirmessagetothestreet.Thesecondexplanationsuggeststhatwhenindependentjudiciariesprovideacheckontheexecutive,theexecutivewillbelesslikelytorepressandcoercetheprotestsandopposition

groups,thusprovidingthegroupscovertoassemble.Ifthecourtlimitstheauthorityoftheexecutive,oriftheregimeleaderisforcedtoaccountforhisactionsinapubliccourtoflaw,theywillbelesslikelytouseforceifitwillcostthemlegitimacyortheyfacesomepunishment.Protesters,beingawareofthepossibilitytheregimecouldbecalledinfrontofthecourttoaccountforviolenceagainstprotesters,mayseizeontheopportunitytoprotest.Inotherwords,themoreindependentcourtsystem,themorelikelyprotestswilloccur.Althoughpriorresearchindicatesthatindependentcourtsoftenresultinlessviolentuprisings,itdoeshoweverincurmorepeacefulpoliticaldemonstrations.Assuch,whenregimesforeseepotentialforrebellioninoppositiongroups,theyofferlegalconcessionstopreemptdeleteriousactivity.Asystematicindependentcourtapparatusissuesabroadarrayoflegalremediesandchecksonautocraticregimes.Theobjectiveofthisresearchistobetterunderstandthemotivationsbehindtheprotestsinauthoritativestates,andwhethertheindependenceofthejudiciaryaffectstheseverityandfrequencyofprotests.

Previousresearchhasimplicatedthepositivemodulationofanandamide,anendocannabinoidneurotransmitter,onfeedingbehavior.Anandamideisparticularlynoteworthyasitsharesasimilarmechanismofactionwithtetrahydrocannabinol,theprimarypsychoactivecomponentinCannabis.CannabislegalizationinNorthAmericahaspresentedwithaneedtostudyendocannabinoidagonistsandtheireffectsonbehavior.Muchhasyettobedeterminedintermsoftheroleoftheendocannabinoidsystemindecision-makingscenarios.Theresearchpresentedheretestedthehypothesisthatanandamidewouldaugmentmotivationandrewardprocessingviaappetitiveandconsummatorymeasuresduringanoperant,foragingtask.Athree-boxdesignwasusedinordertoprovidetheanimalswithafreechoice,exploratoryforagingenvironment.Discrimination,preference,andincentivecontrastwereanalyzedasdiscretemeasuresofdecision-makinginthethree-boxparadigm.Anandamideadministration(1mg/kg)wasfoundtosignificantlyincreasemotivationfortheoptimalforagingoutcome.The

Thenavigationalabilitiesofamblypigidshasbeenlittlestudied.Fieldstudiessuggestthatwhennavigatingbacktotheirhomerefuges,amblypigidsmayrelyonolfactorycuesandthatvisualcuesarenotneeded.Inthisparticularstudy,thepotentialuseofmagneticcueswasexplored.Themethodsusedwerebasedonanexperimentinwhichamblypygidsweresuccessfullytrainedtodiscriminatebetweensheltersbasedonolfactorycues.Subjectsweretrainedtodiscriminatebetweenasheltercuedbyalocalizedshiftinthepolarityofthemagneticfieldandashelternearwhichthefieldwasunmanipulated.Afterthetraining,subjectsweregivenachoicetestandthetimespentneareachshelterwasrecorded.Theexperimentisnotyetcompleted,buttheresultssuggestthatthepotencyofmagneticcuesasnavigationalguidesislessthanthatofolfactorycues.

Theenvironmentinwhichanadolescentresidesaffectstheirdevelopment,howevertheadolescent’sperceptionoftheirenvironmentshouldbeconsideredaswell.MennisandMason(2011)foundthattheperceptionsofparticipantswerevitalwhenstudyinglocations,inparticularwhendealingwithsubstanceuse.Furthermore,previousresearchbyGormanetal(2001)establishedthatalcoholoutletdensitywaspositivelycorrelatedwithviolentcrime.Thiswouldinturn,increasethenegativeperceptionoftheneighborhood.Thus,thepresentstudysoughttounderstandtheaffectsofalcoholoutletslocationsonadolescentperceptionsofneighborhood.Thisstudyanalyzedtheproximityofalcoholoutletlocationstourbanadolescentsintheirhomeneighborhoodandrecordedtheirperceptionoftheirneighborhoodinaninterview.Theadolescentswereaskedtoillustratetheirperceivedhomeneighborhoodviasketchmaps,whichwerethenrecordedontoArcGISsoftwareforfurtheranalysis.Thespatialrelationshipofalcoholoutletstotheadolescents’homeneighborhoodwasexamined,andthuscreatedinsightintothefrequencythattheadolescentwouldencounteralcoholoutletsduringtheirdailyroutine.Basedontheanswersreceivedduringtheinterview,theperspectiveofanadolescent’sneighborhoodwasmeasuredintermsof:neighborhoodattachment,streetcode,socialcontrol,collectiveefficacy,andsocialcohesion.Findings(n=52)suggestnocorrelationbetweenalcoholoutletlocationsandtheadolescentviewsofneighborhood.Thiswouldmeanthatthenumberofalcoholoutletlocationaroundanadolescent’shomeneighborhooddoesnothaveanimpactonhowthatindividualperceivestheirneighborhood.However,theseinsignificantfindingscouldbecausedbyalackoftheadolescenttofullyappreciatetheirenvironmentandthedifferencesinwhichtheadolescentdefinedtheirhomeneighborhoods.Duetothesefindings,furtherresearchandpracticeisneededtostudyinmoredepth.WorksCitedGorman,D.M.,Speer,P.W.,Gruenewald,P.J.,&Labouvie,E.W.(2001).Spatialdynamicsofalcoholavailability,neighborhoodstructureandviolentcrime.Journalofstudiesonalcohol,62(5),628-636.Mennis,J.,&Mason,M.J.(2011).People,places,andadolescentsubstanceuse:Integratingactivityspaceandsocialnetworkdataforanalyzinghealthbehavior.AnnalsoftheAssociationofAmericanGeographers,101(2),272-291.

IncentiveContrastAsARelativeRewardProcess

:Incentivecontrasthasbeenaverypopularresearchtopicinbehavioralneuroscience.Incentivecontrastisthechangeinresponsetoaparticularrewardduetotheoutcomebeingdifferentthanpreviousexposure.Anexampleofthiswouldbereceivingonehundreddollarsafteronlygettingonedollarthepreviousday(positivecontrast)oronlygettingadollarafterreceivingonehundredfromthedaybefore(negativecontrast).Mostoftheresearchhaslookedatincentivecontrastineitherthroughconsummatoryactionsoroperanttasks,neverbothtogether.Itisunknownhowthesetwoprocessesworktogethertopredictincentivecontrast.Forthisstudyinparticular,weareexaminingappetitivemeasuresuchas,totalnumberofleverpresses,nosespokesandlatencieswithintheapparatus.Theconsummatorymeasurebeinginvestigatedistotalamountdrank.Thisstudyexaminestherelationshipbetweenrapidrelativerewardcomparisonsandincentivecontrastamongrats(n=3)thatarebothdeprived(85%-87%)andnon-deprivedusingappetitiveandconsummatorymeasures.Animalsweretrainedtonosepokeandlever-pressinordertoobtainaccesstoasucrosesolution(concentrationused:2.5%,10%,20%or40%indeionizedwater).Theserewardswereplacedoutsideanoperantboxwhichcouldbereachedthroughasmallhole.Animalsranthrougheighttestingsessionwithtwosingleblocks(5v5%,10v10%,20v20%)andamixedcomparisonblock(5V10%,10v5%)inbetweenthetwosingleblocks.Duringmixedcomparisonblocksthespoutrotatedbetweenpre-randomizedsucrosesolutions,allowingforcomparativeanalysisbetweentwoconcentrationsinoneblock.Duringtheeightsessions,animal’sexperiencesupshifts(positive)ordownshift(negative)relativetoanotheroutcomeinordertoexamineincentivecontrasteffectsonbehaviorperformance.Wewillexaminetheinfluenceofdynamiccomparisonsbetweenthetworewardoutcomesinarepeatedmeasuresdesignwiththreesessions:asingleoutcomeamixedoutcomefollowedbyasingleoutcomesessionforextinction.Wearehopingtoseethattheoperant/instrumentalprocessescanbeaneffectivewaytomeasureincentivecontrast.

Coloringisthoughttobeparticularlyeffectiveinreducingstressbecauseitinvolvesbothself-expressionandconcentrativemeditation;therebylimitingstimulusinputandreducingfocusonnegativeemotionalstates(Curry&Kasser,2005).Thereareafewstudiesthatsupportcoloringmandalastoreducestress(Curry&Kasser,2005;vanderVennetandSerice,2012;Sandmireetal.,2012).Theliterature,however,islimitedbythenumberofstudiesandbyanoverrelianceonself-reportmeasures.Wesoughttofillagapintheliteraturebyexploringtheeffectsofcoloringmandalasonself-reportedmoodandphysiologicalmeasures,specificallyheartrateandbrainwaveactivity.Specifically,wesoughttoinvestigatewhethercoloringmandalaswouldimprovemoodasindicatedbyself-reportandgreaterelectroencephalographic(EEG)left-hemisphericactivity,aproposedglobalindicatorofpositivemood.WealsohypothesizedthatcoloringwouldreduceheartandincreaseEEGthetaamplitude,ameasureofcorticalarousal.Todate,thereisnostudyontheimpactofmandalacoloringonbrainwaveactivity.Consequently,thisstudyallowedustoexaminetheimpactofcoloringmandalasatafundamentalneurophysiologicallevel.

Althoughsomeauthorshavediscussedan“adaptive”dimensionofperfectionism,FlettandHewitt(2006)arguedthatadaptiveperfectionismasdefinedintheliterature“bearsastrikingresemblance”toconscientiousness,andthatperfectionismisalwaysamaladaptiveconstructthatdescribesthosewhoplaceanirrationalimportanceonachievingimpossiblyhighstandards.Toexplorethenatureofthisconstruct,thisprojectexaminesthecorrelationsamongperfectionismcognitions,rumination,worry,andconscientiousness,andexploreswhetherindividualswhoreporthavingacurrentdiagnosisofdepressionoranxietyreporthigherlevelsofthesefourconstructs.621participantscompletedanonlinequestionnairewithself-reportmeasuresoftheseconstructs.Perfectionismcognitions,rumination,andworrywereallhighlypositivelycorrelated(p<.001).Additionally,conscientiousnessandruminationhadasmall,butsignificantnegativecorrelation(p=.001),andperfectionismcognitionsandconscientiousnesshadasmall,butsignificantpositivecorrelation(p=.005).Finally,wefoundthatthosewhoreporthavingadiagnosisofanxietyordepressionreportedsignificantlyhigherlevelsofperfectionismcognitions,rumination,andworry(p<.001)thanthosewithoutthisdiagnosis.Therewasnosignificantdifferencewhencomparinglevelsofconscientiousnessbetweenthe

Teleworkisdefinedintermsofaworkarrangementwhichallowsonetoworkremotelyfromthetraditionalworkplaceinlocationssuchasthehome,telecenters(e.g.publiclibrarieswithinternetaccess,universitytelecenters,cybercafés),andcafesforoneormoredaysoftheworkweek.Duetothedistancedstyleofworkalteringcommunicationwithcoworkersandsupervisors,workplacesocialinteractionsmaydifferforteleworkersrelativetotheirtraditionalpeers.Thisstudyexaminesthesocialinteractions(e.g.,theroleofgossip)withinasampleof236teleworkersand197traditionalworkers.Withinourtheoreticallygroundmodel,aspredicted,gossiphadapositivedirecteffectonaffectivecommitmentdemonstratingapotentialpositiveoutcomeofgossip.However,aspredicted,gossiphadanegativeindirecteffectonaffectivecommitmentwhenengagingingossipelicitedretaliatorybehaviors(intheformofincivility)fromcoworkersandsupervisors.Subgroupdifferencesbetweenteleworkersversusnon-teleworkerswereobservedinmultiplegroupanalyses.Thus,consistentwiththeory,gossiphadbothpositiveandnegativeimplications.Implicationsofthisstudyarediscussedandsuggestionsaremadeforfutureresearch.

Previousresearchonhowordereffectscaninfluencemotivationinchoicebehaviorhastraditionallybeenexploredinparadigmsthatbydesignlimit,orcompletelyremovefundamentalbehavioralprocessesthatmayimpactchoiceevaluationanddiscrimination(i.e.freeforaging).Previouswork,andpreliminarydata,hasindicatedthatthesequenceofeffortexperiencecouldhavemajorimpactsonthelevelofmotivationforareward.Withearlyhighlevelsofeffortpairedwithsmallrewardvaluesshowinganincreaseddifficultyinelicitingandmaintainingworkoutput,independentoflatervariationsoffoodreward.Thepresentstudyusedaparadigmthatcouple’selementsofrewardorder,freechoice,andfreeforagingwiththegoalofformingamorenaturalisticmodelofhowordereffectsrelatetoworkmotivation/outputintheratmodelofchoice.Inordertoanalyzetheeffectsoforderonchoicebehaviorathree-boxdesignwasimplemented.Overaperiodofsevenweeks’rewardoutcomesinthehigheffortbox(5leverpress)wereshiftedbyweekforamixed-optionoutcome(5,4,3,1,3,4,5pellets).Whileintheloweffortbox(oneleverpress)aconstantrewardorsingleoption(onepellet)wasmaintainedoverallweeks.Workmotivation/outputwasdeterminedthroughanalysisofhigheffortrewarddiscrimination,preferenceandincentivecontrastbetweenweeks.Anordereffectwasobservedwithanimalsworkingharderandprovidingmoreeffortwhenrewardsweredecreasing,whencomparedtorewardsincreasing,byweek;(1>7),(2>6),(3>5).Thesefindingssuggestthatratswhoexperiencehigherlevelsofworkfirst,willchoosetoworkandpreferworkingevenwhenthefoodrewardisdecreasedtoapointwhereitiscostlyincomparisontotheconstantoneleverpressonepelletreward.

In1988duringtheheightoftheHIVandAIDSpandemic,across-sectionalsurveywasdistributedtoBGSUstudentsaskingaboutknowledge,perceptions,andbehaviorsregardingHIVandAIDS.ToseeifHIV-specificknowledgeandperceptionshavechangedamongBGSUstudentsin2016comparedto1988,focusgroupswereheldandasurveywasdeliveredtoBGSUstudents.KnowledgeregardingHIVtestinghasincreased(by25%)whileknowledgeoftreatmentofHIVhasdecreased(by22%).StudentsperceiveamediumlikelihoodthatsomeonetheyknowcouldcontractHIV,butperceiveaverylowlikelihoodthattheycouldcontractHIV.AdditionaleducationalopportunitiesshouldbeexploredbyBGSUtopreventtransmissionofHIV.

BecauseofadvancesinHIVtreatment,andgeneralhealthcare,theagingpopulationlivingwithHIVhasbeengrowingexponentially,jumpingfromonly9%(71,428)in2000toalmost45%(428,724)in2014.Subsequently,theneedtomeasurethequalityoflifeforHIVpatientsovertheageof50hasbeenthesubjectforresearchinthepastdecade.Thisstudyactsasasmall-scalemeta-analysiscompiledofstudiesthatmeasurethequalityoflifeforpeopleovertheageof50andlivingwithHIV.ThepurposeofthisstudyistocollectandcomparedataregardingthequalityoflifeforthisparticularpopulationofHIVpatients.Eachsamplestudywasreviewedandanalyzedtodeterminewhattoolswereusedtomeasurethequalityoflifefortheirsubjects,aswellaswhatdatawasdiscoveredthroughtheirresearch.Findingsforeachstudywascompiled,andcomparedwhencontradictingmeasuringtoolswereused.Withthisstudy,wehopetoprovideeffectiveandefficientmethodsformeasuringthequalityoflifeofHIVpatientsovertheageof50.

Asof2016,about2.4%ofprisonersare55oroldertotaling4,652prisonersoverall(FederalBureauofPrisoners,2016).Thepurposeofthestudyistodetermineifthereisacorrelationbetweenthetimeoftheyearandthetypeofoffensecommittedamongmaleolderadults.Thisstudyisimportantbecauseassocialworkersweareabletoimplementcertainprogramsaroundthemostcriminalseasonsinordertoseeadecreaseincrime.TheobjectiveofthisresearchistoidentifypatternsofcriminalactivityamongolderadultmaleswithinthestateofOhio.Ourmethodologyinordertocollectdatainvolvesliteraturereviews,secondarydataanalysis,casestudies,andspecificallylookingatcrimescommittedincertaincountiesinOhio.Oursamplepopulationwas100adultmales.Findings,fromboththeliteraturereviewandsecondarydataanalysis,indicatethatthereisastrongcorrelationbetweentheseasonsandthetypeofoffensecommitted.Duetothesefindings,wesuggestthatmoreprogramsshouldbeinplacetodivertthesecriminalactionsamongolderadultsduringcertainseasonsoftheyear,asthisisavulnerablepopulation.Keywords:older,corrections,seasons,offense,andmales

Graydivorce,ordivorceaftertheageof50,hasdoubledsince1990,whereaswidowhoodisonthedecline.Widowhoodisnegativelyassociatedwithwell-beingbutlittleisknownaboutdivorceinlaterlife.Ourstudybuildsuponpreviousresearchbyexaminingtheassociationbetweengraydivorceandwell-being.Wealsoconsiderwhetherrepartneringhelpstoamelioratethenegativeconsequencesofmaritaldissolution.Further,menoftenreapgreaterpsychologicaladvantagesfrommarriagethanwomen,whichmayleadtogenderdifferencesinhealthoutcomesfollowinguniondissolutionandrepartnership.Usingdatafromthe2010HealthandRetirementStudy,wefoundthatdivorcedsdrinkmorethanwidoweds,withdivorcedswhoremainsinglereportingthehighestlevelsofalcoholuse.Divorcedsandwidowedswhorepartnerhavelowerlevelsofdepressivesymptomsthandivorcedsandwidowedswhoremainsinglesuggestingthatregardlessofdissolutiontype,repartneredindividualsreportlowerlevelsofdepressivesymptomsthanthosewhoremainsingle.Mentendtodrinkmorethanwomenwiththeexceptionofdivorcedrepartneredmen.Regardlessofrepartneringstatus,divorcedwomenreporthigherlevelsofdepressivesymptomsthandivorcedmen.However,therearenodifferencesamongmenandwomenwhoarewidowed.Thisstudycontributestothecurrentbodyofliteraturebyprovidingnewinsightsonthehealthconsequencesofdivorceandrepartnershipforbothmenandwomen.

Thisstudyexaminesthelinkbetweenastudent’srelationship,levelsofconflictandclosenesswithhisorherteacherandstudent’sacademicperformance,withaspecificattentiontovariationbysocioeconomicstatusmeasuredbythestudent’smother’seducationalattainment.Dataforthisstudywasdrawnfromthe(NICHD)StudyofEarlyChildCareandYouthDevelopment,alongitudinalstudyoffamiliesover15years,focusingontheyearwhenthestudychildrenwereinfifthgrade,foundinWaveIII(N=924).Overall,teacher’sreportedlowconflictandhighclosenesswiththeirstudents.Cross-tabulationanalysiswithChi-squaretestsfoundthatstudentsweremorelikelytoscorehigherontestsofmathematicalthinkingandlanguageandliteracyiftheyhadlowconflictwiththeirteacher.Therewaslittlevariationbymother’seducationinthisassociation.Theseresultssuggesttheimportanceofagoodrelationshipbetweenstudentsandtheirteachersforthestudent’sacademicsuccessregardlessoftheirfamiliesSES.

Foodneophobia,afearofunfamiliarfoods,andproblematicmealtimebehaviorsarecommonamongyoungchildren.Childneophobiahasbeenlinkedtopoordietaryvarietyandnutrientintake,potentialriskfactorsforestablishinglong-term,unhealthyeatinghabits(Johnson,Davies,Boles,Gavin&Bellows,2015).Amongadults,mindfuleating(i.e.,beingpresentandawareofeatinginthemoment)hasbeenassociatedwithreducedcalorieconsumptionandhealthiersnackchoices;however,minimalresearchhasexploredtherelationshipbetweenmindfulnessandeatingbehaviorsinyoungchildren(Jordan,Wang,Donatoni,&Meier,2014).Thepresentstudydescribesanewmindfuleatinginterventionforyoungchildrenandexamineswhetheritincreaseschildmindfulnessanddecreaseschildneophobiaandproblematicmealtimebehaviors.Asampleof30preschoolerswillbeincludedintheintervention.Sofar,ninepreschoolers,ages4-6,andtheirparentshavebeenrecruitedfromalocaldaycareinBowlingGreen,OH.Parentscompletedpre-andpost-interventionquestionnairesabouttheirfeedingpracticesandtheirchild’smealtimebehaviors.Thepreschoolersparticipatedin10briefinterventionsessions,aswellaspre-andpost-testsassessingtheirneophobiaandmindfulness.Preliminaryfindingsonthissubsamplesuggestthatthenumberofsensesbeingusedhaveincreasedfrompre-testsandpost-tests.Theaveragenumberofsensesusedduringpre-testfortoyswentfrom3.78to4.Theaveragenumberofsensesusedalsoincreasedfromfoodpre-testpost-test,from3.56to5.4.Thenumberofsensesusedinthepre-foodtestcomparedtothe
