Arroyo Seco Junior High School “We lead, others follow”
Seco Gram_______________________________________________________________________From the Principal:
I hope you all had a restful winter break as we return to school for the start of the 3rd quarter.
Second semester will be busy. Here is some important information about some things that are happening
around campus this upcoming semester.
The City of Santa Clarita is in the process of conducting a study of the walking and biking routes
to city junior highs and high schools, to promote Safe Routes to Schools. The study will include audits and
surveys to assess challenges and determine steps the city can take to help address those challenges. Please
do your part by following all traffic rules and by driving in a courteous and safe manner on and near the
campus. Please also encourage your students to follow all traffic signals and the directions of the crossing
guards in a respectful manner. By working together, we can help ensure safe travel for all of our students to
and from school.
The District has made some changes to its policy regarding intra district transfers. For the first
time, all 8th grade Arroyo Seco promotees will automatically roll over to our feeder, Saugus High School,
regardless of where they live. If your child lives in a different residence area and would like to attend their
home high school instead of Saugus, contact Joy Williams, Registrar, at extension 1130. Intra District
transfer requests only need to be submitted if you would like your child to attend a school other than
Saugus that is outside of your residence area; IDT forms for these requests are now available on the district
website. Please note that there are a limited number of reasons for which IDT’s are granted (see the website
for the specific criteria).
Students will be participating in CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and
Progress) testing this spring. This test provides valuable information about how our school and students are
performing academically. The testing window is from April 30 through May 11 (students will not test in
every period every day – we will send out a testing schedule later this semester). Our goal is 100%
attendance during this time period. To see what kinds of questions your child will be asked to do, or if you
would like to help them prepare, please preview the CAASPP Practice Test at
https://login3.cloud1.tds.airast.org/student/V225/Pages/LoginShell.aspx?c=California_PT. Select Student
Interface and Practice Tests. You do not need to enter any login information, just sign in as a guest. On the
second screen, you will only need to select the grade level. Because these tests are online, we recommend
students take some time building their typing skills. Here is a website that is both fun AND educational:
https://www.typingclub.com/sportal/team-11887/program- typing-jungle.game
Our Annual Showcase Presentations for 8th graders will be on Thursday, May 24, 2018. This
program provides students the opportunity to share their portfolio of work with an adult in a one-on-one
conference. This is a powerful experience for students as they reflect on and brag about what they have
accomplished over the past year or two. It is also an enriching experience for adults who meet with the
students and provide them meaningful feedback. If you are interested in participating in our Showcase,
please contact Jan Johnson at 661-296- 0991 ext. 1107 or by email at [email protected].
Our next PAC meeting will be on Monday, January 29, at 8:30 am in K-Hall. This breakfast
meeting will be combined with Saugus High School’s and will include Mr. Vince Ferry, Principal. For 8th
grade parents in particular, this is a great opportunity to participate in a question and answer session about
the transition to high school. We look forward to seeing many of you there.
We are looking forward to having a great third quarter and an outstanding second semester.
Dr. Andrew Keyne, Principal Issue Number 3 January, February, March 2018
Counselor’s Corner
High School Registration is just around the corner!
It’s hard to believe it is already time to start discussing the high school registration
process. All students at Arroyo Seco are slated to attend Saugus High School. If Saugus
High School is not your home high school, and you would like your child to attend the
home high school, please contact our registrar, Joy Williams, at 661-296- 0991 ext. 2. If
you would like your child to attend a high school other than Saugus or their home school,
a new IDT must be completed. The window for submitting IDTs for high school is now
open and you are encouraged to complete your request as soon as possible. Forms can be
found on our district website at www.hartdistrict.org under the student drop down menu.
Saugus registration events start in March. Listed below are some important dates:
March 13th – Saugus Athletics and ASB will be coming to Seco to explain their
programs. During their PE classes, students will go to K-Hall for a presentation and an
opportunity to meet with students and coaches in their areas of interest.
March 14th – Saugus Electives will be coming to Seco to share their programs. During
their PE classes, students will go to K-Hall for an opportunity to meet with students,
teachers and advisors, in their areas of interest.
March 22nd – Freshman Orientation at Saugus High School: Saugus High School
Counselors welcome all incoming freshman and their parents to attend this informative
meeting before the Saugus’ Open House. Time has yet to be determined.
March 23rd – High School Counselors will be at Seco presenting an overview of high
school and the registration process as well as answering student questions and concerns.
Students will attend the presentation through their history classes. (Students in paced
curriculum classes will attend through science.) Each student will receive a registration
guide to take home and draft their course requests. Please review the guide with your
child.
April 9th -13th – High School Registration! Saugus counselors will meet individually
with each student to register and select high school courses. Please note that English,
math and science placements are determined by junior high school grades and
performance. Students will choose two electives and an appropriate physical education
placement. Registration is done through history classes (science classes for students in
the paced program) and each team will register on a different date. Specific team dates
are yet to be determined.
Students interested in attending Academy of the Canyons –
Students interested in applying for Academy of the Canyons must attend one of two
informational nights. Students MUST be accompanied by a parent:

Team News
7th Grade
Aloha –Mrs. Klipfel, Mr. Oatey, Ms. Senen, Mrs. Takla, Mrs. Chase
Team Aloha is looking forward to a great third quarter. In history class this quarter, we will be
learning about the Japanese Middle Ages including the development of the samurai warrior class.
We will then move on to the European Middle Ages where we will be studying about the
development of the medieval knight and the Crusades. On Friday, March 2 many of our students
will be participating in our annual nighttime optional field trip to Medieval Times Dinner and
Tournament where we will get a realistic experience of the European Middle Ages.
In English class, we will be working hard on argumentative writing. Building on the essay skills
we have already developed, we will now be focusing on argumentative writing and adding
counterclaims to our essays, while continuing to construct strong thesis statements, supporting
evidence, and textual analysis. We will be diving into a myriad of texts including essays, articles,
poems, and speeches about the exploration. Students will be evaluating whether or not the risks
people face by exploring new frontiers are ultimately worth the costs.
In Math 7, we will start out with evaluating algebraic expressions which will lead into solving
equations and inequalities. These skills are essential for students to begin building a foundation
for Algebra concepts that will be used throughout the rest of their math education. Then we will
start to look at some geometry concepts including triangles and scale factors. In Accelerated Math
7, students will start digging into the core 8th grade standards of simplifying expressions, solving
equations and inequalities, and exploring linear functions.
Quarter three in science brings us through a study of the human body and evolution. Students
will learn how their various organ systems work together to give their bodies their structure and
how they perform the functions of life. Students will then study the scientific evidence of
evolution.
Please remember that Team Aloha offers study club four days a week at lunch to help our
students get extra help or get caught up on their missing work. Study club is held at lunch
Monday in math, Tuesday in history, Wednesday in English and Thursday in science.
Extreme - Mrs. Choate, Mrs. Larochelle, Mrs. Mahoney, Mrs. Simmons
Team Extreme wants to remind you of our website.
http://www.arroyosecojuniorhigh.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=754877&type=d&pREC_I
D=1162374. You can find helpful information about our team as well as the links to
HOMEWORK from each team teacher.
In quarter two, students in English investigated “Perception and Reality.” We looked at social
perception and its effects within the novel Stargirl. We also read, annotated, and wrote
informational pieces on teen stress, magic and the brain, and napping. Then, we wrote two
informational essays. In Quarter three, students will venture into understanding argumentative
writing and the theme of “Risk and Exploration.” We are beginning by doing mini group research
projects on The Cold War, space exploration, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, and
science fiction to build background for our texts. Next, we will explore space and the space race
by looking at a speech by John F. Kennedy, the movie Hidden Figures, and fiction such as The
Monsters are Due on Maple Street. Finally, students will end the quarter by writing an
argumentative essay and reading the novel, A Wrinkle in Time.
Math 7 learned the standards of Ratios, Proportions & Percents during quarter 2. We discovered
how unit ratios, unit rates and proportional relations are used in the real world. We solved percent
problems for buying clothing or finding tip and tax at a restaurant. During quarter 3 we will be
evaluating expressions, equations and inequalities. These are the core Algebra skills needed for
their future in math. Parents and students are encouraged to continue to check GOOGLE
CLASSROOM each day for the math lesson as well as Mrs. Choate’s website and classes for a
list of assignment due dates.
During the 2nd quarter World History and Geography explored several ancient civilizations in the
Americas including the Maya, Inca, and Aztec civilizations. We also began China’s Golden Age
including the Mongol Ascendancy. During Quarter 3, we will wrap up China, the Mongols, and
will be exploring Japan and Europe during the Middle Ages. Stay tuned for more information
about our optional night-time field trip to Medieval Times on Friday, March 2, 2018.
Science classes finished quarter two with a fabulous field trip to see Body World at the California
Science Center. It will certainly be referred back to when we are studying human body systems.
Quarter three brings us through a study of the human body and evolution. Students will learn
how their various organ systems work together to give their bodies their structure and how they
perform the functions of life. Students will then study the scientific evidence of evolution.
Fusion - Mr. Dannerth, Mrs. Malneck, Mr. Nez, Mr. Stuart, Mrs. Chase
Fusion Math 7 classes are beginning a unit on writing and evaluating algebraic expressions. This
unit will lead into the next unit covering solving equations. We will end the quarter with learning
about scale factors and working on a scale drawing project.
The Fusion Math 7 Accelerated class is starting the third quarter working with algebraic
expressions and equations. The second half of the quarter will be spent studying geometric shapes
and formulas for area and volume.
This quarter in seventh grade English we will continue our journey through the universal themes
of literature as we begin our unit on the Hero’s Journey. We will also continue strengthening our
essay writing skills as we study argumentative writing (and the sharp wits of your children
become even more persuasive than ever – don’t say I didn’t warn you). Lastly, we will continue
our work to improve our grammar skills so that text-speak becomes a thing of the past!!!
Genesis - Mrs. Dibene, Mr. Elliott, Mrs. Foster, Mr. Tracy
We are back from the long Christmas break, and we are looking forward to starting the second
half of the school year. Be sure to take advantage of our online tools to keep up with your child’s
progress during the third quarter. Infinite Campus is a great way to keep track of your child’s
grades, and our homework calendar, which can be found on our team’s webpage, is a great way to
see what is due each day. Also be sure to email the teachers if you have any questions or
concerns throughout the quarter. It has been a great year so far and we can’t wait to see what that
second semester has in store for us.
7th grade Team Genesis history is starting off the new semester learning about the ancient Maya
and Aztec civilizations in the Americas. After the Americas unit, Team Genesis students will
start our unit on China and Japan. Team Genesis is happy to announce that we will be hosting 5
Chinese exchange students for 4 days in February during our unit on Ancient China. Students
will be able to interact with middle school aged students from China and will learn about their
customs, culture, and society.
8th Grade
Odyssey - Mrs. Ake, Mr. Bowers, Mrs. Koegle, Ms. Suazo
In Math 8 this quarter we will be studying how to solve equations and how to solve systems of
equations. Through multiple methods, students will discover the solution to a system of equations
is the point of intersection. We will connect the problems in the unit to situations that may be
encountered in real life. For example, we will determine which is more cost effective Starbucks
or Keurig using a system of equations. In Algebra students will be studying sequences and series.
Soon we will be starting a unit on functions and how to solve a system of non-linear equations.
In science, Odyssey students will be finishing up their study of electricity and magnetism by
building a simple motor. They will then launch into their next unit on thermal energy. Students
will learn about energy transfer and temperature, changes in energy at the molecular level, and
phase changes of matter. They will apply this knowledge to an engineering challenge when they
have to construct their own insulator. Students will then move on to our next unit, which studies
chemical reactions. Students will learn about molecular composition, the conservation of matter
during chemical reactions, and how synthetic materials are made.
Odyssey English will be working with the Essential Question: How does being a worker benefit
and challenge people? While discussing the Value of Work students will use the Naviance
program to determine their personal strengths. This knowledge will help them to fill out a mock
job application, resume, and a business letter.
In History, we began 3rd quarter by continuing to look at some of the early presidents. We will
then turn our attention to westward expansion and the western events that help to create tension
between then Southern and Northern parts of the nation. We then move into looking at the
differences between the North and South, and the issues that drove the country to the Civil War.
Revolution - Mrs. Crawford, Mr. Good, Mr. Olson, Mr. Rippe, Mrs. Fumarolo
This quarter English students will be exploring the world of work through our textbook
selections, creating resumes, filling out job applications, and writing business letters. We will
then move into learning how to write argumentative essays complete with textual evidence and
addressed counterarguments.
In Math 8, we will be starting out 2018 with a review of solving equations. This will be a good
lead-in to our next unit which is solving a system of equations. In that unit, we will discover
things such as break-even points of profit and cost. These units are building blocks for Algebra
next year. In Algebra, we will be looking at sequences, continuing our knowledge of exponents,
and also looking at exponential functions and how they can be transformed. We will be using
Desmos frequently to help discover the possible transformations and to reinforce concepts used in
class.
In science this quarter, students are investigating electricity. They will have constructed an
electromagnet and a simple motor applying magnetism concepts from first quarter and electricity
concepts from this quarter. Next, students will be exploring energy, and how energy is
transferred from one form to another. Students continue to participate in many hands on activities
to help vitalize their interest in science.
Revolution history will focus on the growth of the nation between 1800 and 1860. We will
examine social and political trends that shaped the nation including slavery, women's rights,
temperance, and government power.
Triumph - Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Gallagher, Mrs. Simoncioni, Mr. VanDyke
Team Triumph Science is currently learning about Magnetic Field Forces and will next learn
about Electric Charge and Current. The performance tasks for this unit will include working with
Electromagnets and building and testing Electric Motors. Toward the middle of Quarter 3, we
will start our next unit involving Chemistry and the Periodic Table of Elements.
Team Triumph English will begin Quarter 3 by exploring students strengths through Naviance,
and exploring careers best suited to their strengths. Students will read texts from Collection
6, The Value of Work, in our English textbook, followed by The Giver by Lois Lowry. Students
will then write an argumentative essay both for class and for the district Performance Task.
In Quarter 3, Team Triumph students will be learning about how the three branches of
government operate under the Constitution of the United States, and about what their rights and
responsibilities are as American citizens, according to the Bill of Rights. After that, they will be
studying the Early Republic, including all the Presidents from Washington through Jackson. We
will create a flip-book project comparing the beliefs of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas
Jefferson and explaining how their feud led to the creation of the first two political parties. Later,
as they learn about the French Revolution and the War of 1812, as part of my “Hands-on History”
program, students will be able to use a (harmless!) guillotine and hold an actual piece of the
U.S.S. Constitution, a naval ship more commonly known as “Old Ironsides.” Finally, students
will study one of the most interesting figures in American history, Andrew Jackson!
Viper - Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Hougo, Mrs. Kurowski, Mrs. Tracy
Team Viper is off to a great start for third quarter. In history, we begin our journey with President
George Washington and the challenges of the young nation. The second part of the quarter will
take a closer look at the westward movement, the industrialized North, and life in the slave South.
This will set the stage for the Civil War in fourth quarter.
Science class enters the world of electricity and energy, which are covered in an interactive,
hands on way. Relating these topics to everyday life is the goal to make the learning both
enjoyable and relevant.
Math 8 classes are returning to equations in one variable to take a deeper look at how these
equations are solved, written, and applied. We will learn about different types of solutions leading
into our next unit, Solving Systems of Linear Equations, where we will use equations of two lines
to find where they intersect.
English classes tackle a career unit including job applications, resumes and business letters. And
we will read essays and narratives about the “value of work.” Students will also have the
opportunity to purchase Showcase binders as we begin to prepare for our exit interviews at the
end of the school year. Argument essays with researched evidence will follow in February along
with the dramatized adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank. The new year is a very busy time for
team Viper students as we have officially reached the halfway point!

Honor Society
As a result of academic achievement during the first semester of this year, students may be
eligible for the Arroyo Seco Honor Society. In order to qualify, students must have earned a 3.5
grade point average in the fall semester of 2017. If students meet this requirement, they then must
complete the application (available beginning January 22) with the necessary parent signature,
bring a check for the suggested $8.00 donation, and complete the verification of service hours.
Applications can be picked up from English teachers and they must be returned to Mrs. Loughlin
in the main office by Friday, February 23. The service hours do not have to be completed by the
time that the application is turned in. Parents can sign the service hours form with an explanation
of when and where the hours will be completed. For more information, check the Honor Society
link on the school website.
Exploratories
Beginning Band - Students in the beginning band have made huge strides in in their playing
since they first started playing on their instrument. I am very impressed with their work ethic
and their constant growth each day. We look forward to continuing our growth towards music
literacy, learning new notes on each instrument, developing a characteristic tone quality, building
technique, and playing as a unified ensemble.
Advanced Band - Advanced band has been progressing in their playing, musicianship, and stage
presence by preparing for the upcoming honor band auditions on February 2nd and 3rd. At the
same time, we are building towards a more refined characteristic sound, ensemble blend,
individual control, articulation, and musicality. This semester we look forward to collaborating
with Saugus High School at a collaborative concert, experiencing what it's like to be a
professional studio recording musician through Disneyland's Soundtrack Recording Session,
perform at nearby elementary schools, and other school and community events.
Exploratory Music - A new quarter of exploratory music has just begun and I am excited that
the students will learn rhythms and improvisation through drum circle, cultures from all around
the world in our World Music unit, learn about the influence of music in movies and videos in our
Music in the Media unit, learn about and try different instruments in the orchestra, and learn to
read and perform notated music on recorders.
Culinary I - Students are exploring many exciting themes and discovering their cooking talents.
Topics covered this quarter include food and kitchen safety, recipe reading, proper measuring,
food labels, and nutrition. Students will also prepare several delicious recipes, such as buttermilk
pancakes, fresh salsa, and homemade pizza. Recipes and pictures of the foods we make can be
found on our class website: www.asculinaryarts.weebly.com
Hospitality - Students are refining and expanding upon skills learned in Culinary I and II. Here,
students prepare fresh and delicious foods daily for cooking labs and school caterings. This
includes items such as dressings, yeast breads, pastries, sandwiches, meats, pastas, and more. In
addition, students analyze their cooking results to evaluate their success, areas of improvement,
and potential alterations. They also gain an understanding of and the food science, history, and
current trends behind recipes highlighted in class. Recipes and pictures of the foods we make can
be found on our class website: www.asculinaryarts.weebly.com
Exploratory Chorus – We will study the history of music by looking at music during the
Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, & 20th Century time periods. We then study specific
genres of Jazz, Rock & Roll, and Movie Music. The students learn how to identify music notes
on a page and how to sing in solfege. The students learn how to sing with each other in a group
setting learning 3-4 songs in a quarter. The quarter culminates with a performance of all the
songs the students learned during the quarter.
Exploratory Drama - The quarter begins by learning different elements of drama and have fun
experimenting with improvisation. We then study Greek Theater and the stories of Greek
Mythology as we research and develop ideas to create our own play. In small groups students
create a god or goddess for their character and begin to develop a mythological story to fit their
characters. Students learn how to rehearse and perform their play on the stage in front of their
peers. The quarter ends with the class putting on a full play learning how to direct, manage lights
& sound, set up costumes and props as well as create a program and greet their guests.
Advanced Chorus - In Advanced Chorus we are learning how to read music and to sing in
solfege. We learn how to sight read both melodically and rhythmically. We are learning how to
use our individual voices to blend with each other in order to sing as one voice. This quarter we
will be learning songs from various styles as we prepare to perform for a variety of events such as
fundraisers, festivals, and ultimately our Spring Concert.
Exploratory Art - In Art class, the students will continue to develop their artistic skills. Over the
coming weeks they will be working on drawing, painting, and printmaking projects. They will
also be learning about art history and the different genres of art.
Exploratory Ceramics - In Ceramics class, the students will be exploring hand-building
construction. They will learn to trim and glaze pottery using a variety of decorative techniques.
Students will also be introduced to the principles of glaze composition and kiln firing.
Design and Modeling - We will be learning the basics of engineering and 3D modeling, printing
out a chess piece and cell phone case.
Flight and Space - We will be building simple flight machines, air foils, gliders and chemical
rockets.
Exploring Computer Science - We will learn the structure of coding and make an animation and
a game from scratch.
Automation and Robotics - We will learn the basics of mechanisms, power trains and robotics.
Junior High Seminar – This class is designed to help students foster academic success in their
junior high school career and to aid in successfully reaching life goals set by the student. The
curriculum focuses on three areas: social/emotional, academic, and college & career and
aligns with the book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Students will examine societal
roles, self-esteem, personality traits, being proactive vs reactive and growth versus fixed
mindsets. Bullying and Cyberbullying is a big unit for us; we dive into ways students can prevent
bullying and provide them with steps to take if they are faced with such a situation. All students
will take a career test and explore the world of work. Students will set a career goal and then
research a path that is best for reaching that goal. They will pick a college or technical institute
they want to attend and figure out what’s needed to get into the school of their choice. With the
8th grade students we will also talk about high school preparation and what to expect before
entering high school next year. Students will learn how to compute their GPA, understand credits,
and read their transcripts. Students will also gain time management, organization and study tips.
All work in junior high seminar hopes to better prepare students for their future.
Once again the Seco family has been kind and generous in sharing with others during this holiday
season. Students, staff, and the PAC donated food, gift cards, and clothing to some of our
students and families facing challenges this holiday season.
In addition, bags of food were given to the SCV homeless shelter, Henry Mayo patients, and Help
the Children Food Pantry. It never ceases to amaze me the number of Conquistadors who come
to the rescue when I share a need. Thank you on behalf of every child and family who benefited
from your gifts.

Happy New Year and welcome back! Third quarter is always a busy one around here. We’re 3 days in and 4 teams have come to check out their new reading/SURFER books and teachers have the next checkouts scheduled in a few weeks! We will do another Donation Drive to collect all those Box Tops you gathered over the holidays, as well as cash, change and check donations to help us keep up with the most current books for our students. February 5-9, donate with the team teacher who has the team’s box. The Scholastic Book Fair will take place March 22-29 (technically 4th quarter, but planning starts now!). I will need some parent volunteers to help that run smoothly. The Read Around the World program will wrap up on March 30th, is up and running. Eighteen students and several staff members are participating. We will have our celebration in April, all are still welcome to join! See Mrs. Goodwin for details. I am teaching Digital Citizenship lessons to all teams this year. There are 3 lessons per grade. Topics include: staying safe online, presenting yourself online, and a creator’s rights/plagiarism. See Common Sense Education for more information on these topics. Please see the included flyers regarding: Ralphs Community Contribution Program, Remind, WiSH Education Foundation (benefitting WSHUHSD libraries, which haven’t received district funding since 2008). Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if I can be of any assistance. Happy reading!
