Ourprintmakingcollectivewillcontributeitscombinedknowledgeofuniquetechniquesin

printmakingandprintmakingequipmenttotheArtExchangecommunitythroughcommercial

printingservices,communityclassesandartistcollaborations..Ourgroupiseagertopractice

andshareourspecificskillsinprintmakingmediumssuchascopperetching,relief,letterpress

“It’salwaysbeenthatway.”Growingup,

hertalentwasidentifiedearly.Cruzcould

drawanythingasanexactmatchfromaveryearlyage.Horses,people,naturescenesallmade

appearancesinCruz’searlyworks.

Mycurrentfocusisexploringspaceanddevelopingaplaceto

enterthepaintingandworkyourwaythough.Iamparticularly

interestedincreatinganenvironmentandbuildingupon

emotionallychargedcontentviathefigureinthat

environment.Thethickapplicationofpainthelpsmetopull

formsoutandcarveoutplaceonatwodimensionalsurface.My

workisvisceralinnature,chargedwithemotionandattimes

franticallylaidout.

TheworkspresentedhereareareflectionoftheprofoundgriefIexperiencedafterthedeathsofmysons.Theangeltitled"NoWords,"wasdoneafterChristopherdiedin2004.Ipaintedfor18months,overandover,Iwantedtoshowsomebody,everybody,theworld,howdevastatedIfeltandItrulyhavenowordstodescribeit.

In2011,MatthewdiedandIbeganthenextfourpieces.Iworkedtheboy,titledWinter,withthesameintensityastheangel.Thecollectiontookabouttwoyearstocomplete.SincetheirdeathsIamdriventoexplorethehumanconditionthroughtheexperiencesofthewounded,thedesperate,theaged;thoseontheedgeofexistence.

Iamdrawntothesurvivors;thosethatawakeneverydaytodreadedmemory,yetriseandgoon,tryingtoliveasthoughitneverhappened.

JoshuaDeanZastrow,aWisconsinborn,movedtoHuntingtonBeachinsearchofanewbeginning.Joshuagrewupwithlittleknowledgeofart,however,hasbeenfascinatedwithit.Asaself‐taughtartist,Joshuastartedpaintingforhisownpleasure;hisstartingmediumwasacrylicovercanvas.AstimewentonJoshuastartedtodiscovernewtechniquesandbecamefascinatedwithplasteroverburlapwithacrylicpaint.Wood,canvas,andplaster,burlap,acrylicinkisamongsomeofJoshua’smediums.Crackingtheplasterandcreatinganimagehasbeenamonghisfavoritethingstodo.Spendinghoursononeindividualpiecetheendresultisoneofuniqueness.

"Ferns,"andtheaccompanyingpieces,illustratevaryingdegreesofformandcolorabstraction.Alonefernhanginginthedarkwasbacklitbyastartledsecuritylight.Brightbeamsofunfilteredlightshonethrough,interspersedwiththefern'sbalancedshadows.Varyingsoftearthshadesofgreenandbrowncontrastedwithstarkbrightanddarkness.Allelements,motionandblureffectsresultfromlow‐light,handheld,manualcameratechniques,withoutflash.Thefernnolongerresembleswhatweknow,orwhatwethink.Withoutbeingledbyobviousanddefinitivesubjectmatterourbrainisallowedtocreate ornot ,oftentimeswithoutourinputandfantasticresults.

Ihavealwayslovedartanddrawing,sinceIwaslittle,watchingmymomdrawlittleflipbooks.Iwasexposedtoit,andlivedwithit,andeventuallylearnedtodrawmyself,especiallycartoonsandcomics.Drawinggavemesomepurpose,IfeltlikeIcoulddosomethingimportant.

Mygoal,withmyart,hasalwaysbeentocreatesomethingoriginal,somethingthatlookedrealistic,butwasstraightoutofmyimagination,withnoreferences.Ilaterlearned,however,thatincorporatingknowledgeaboutart,andmyownexperiences,wasnecessary‐‐inordertocreatemy
