Endangered SpeciesLots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.

Sincerely,
Richard Cervantes, Vice President | Head of Department
F acing a subtly but steadily changing Asian Arts market,
my team and I have endeavored to procure rare and
heretofore undiscovered artworks that should not only appeal
to discerning buyers, but contribute to current scholarship. Lot
146, for example, a Chinese imperial famille noire porcelain seal
of Empress Xiaoyiren, is an artifact so unusual for any period
of the Qing Dynasty, every avenue of inquiry and speculation
seemed to end in more questions than answers. Thankfully,
the 1933 research of Berthold Laufer, perhaps then the world’s
preeminent scholar on Chinese decorative arts, confirms its
authenticity and places it at the time with a matching seal,
now lost, indicating Xuanye, the Kangxi Emperor.
From other American families and private domestic sources
come additional rare and extraordinary properties: a pair of
important zitan tables acquired by an executive working in
Asia in the 1940s, a seemingly experimental 18th century vase
once part of the famed Heber Bishop collection demonstrating
numerous decorative techniques, fine Peking glass from curated
collections, scholarly works from a Pennsylvania collector’s
estate and many more fine lots we found both pleasurable and
enlightening to prepare for auction. With gratitude to my staff
of researchers and you, the client, I present them here.

O ver 200 years ago, Tristram Bampfylde Freeman, a
London print seller, established an auction house in
Philadelphia to
“cherish the arts in the New
World.” We now invite you to
join Freeman’s as we embark
on a new adventure with our
inaugural auction in Hong
Kong. This specially curated
auction with our partners
at Lyon & Turnbull features
an important Chinese
Ming Dynasty porcelain
cup bearing a pre-sale
estimate of $3,000,000 to
6,000,000 and will be held
at the Liang Yi Museum on
Hollywood Road during the
prestigious Asia Week Hong
Kong 2016.
“The burgeoning art market
in Hong Kong, combined
with both companies’
success with attracting and selling to new clients in Asia, made a
joint auction venture in Hong Kong the next logical step to better
serve these collectors,” said Paul Roberts, president of Freeman’s
and vice chairman of Lyon & Turnbull. Freeman’s has enjoyed
tremendous success attracting the attention of the international
market over the past few
years under the guidance of
department head Richard
Cervantes. Collectors have
traveled the globe to attend
auctions of Asian Arts in
Philadelphia, resulting in top
prices for prized works such
as Fu Baoshi’s ink on paper
work “Depicting Tao Yuanming,”
which sold for $413,000, a
large and very rare Imperial
Ge-type moon flask that
realized $903,750, and an
Imperial white jade seal,
Qing dynasty which brought
a spectacular $3,513,000.
Known as the Thornhill Stem
Cup, the Ming Xuande
(1426-35) mark and period
blue and white cup is a rare
masterpiece, seldom seen outside museum collections.
The motif of flying dragons was popular in the Yuan dynasty
but was revived in the Xuande dynasty as can be seen in this

eternally flaming pearl, above a sea with crashing waves tipped
in white and rocks seen around the base. The stem cup was
displayed for the first time in more than 20 years at Asian Art
London in November 2015 and is now making its way to the US
before the Hong Kong sale.
Be a part of our inaugural auction in the Asian art center of the
world. Consignments of important Chinese porcelain, bronze,
jade, and ceramics from Ming, Qianlong, and Republic era China

The monumentalhandle formed by the interlocking horns of twofinely embellished porcelain dragon heads, withdelicately molded facial detailing. The seal face iscarved in seal-style script, bearing the eight-character inscription ‘xiao yi huang hou yu shangzhi bao’ - “Imperial seal certifying the objectsadmired by the Empress Xiao Yi”L: 8 1/2 in., 21.5cm
provenance:The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Graham andMargaret Groves, Coral Gables, Florida.note:This porcelain seal embodies the highdevelopment of potting and glazing techniquesrefined under the reign of Emperor Kangxi. It alsois a fine example of the revival under his rule ofthe “famille noire” glazing method, which was firstused by the Jingdezhen kilns in the mid-fifteenthcentury. This ceremonial seal is one of a pair, theonly type of its kind thought to be in existence, with the other being of identical size anddecoration and bearing the eight-characterinscription of the Kangxi emperor.

REEMAN’S is proud to present the following lots of exceptional works of Chinese glass, aselection which is acutely representative of the items produced by the imperial workshops
of Beijing during the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. The multitude of chemicaland technological techniques employed by the glass artisans of China are evident in thediversity of pieces offered in this section, from bi-color overlaid to transparent and opaquemonochrome examples.
Many of the following fine glass objects come from the collection of renowned Americancollectors Ina and Sandford Gadient. Considered among the most prominent collectors ofChinese glass in the world, the Gadients have assembled their collection of hundreds ofpieces of museum-quality Peking glass over the course of four decades. Their enthusiasm insharing their passion and scholarship on the subject have led to numerous publications, national and international museum exhibitions, as well as generous donations to museumcollections throughout the country.
It is through the Gadients’ guidance that we are also pleased to offer our second grouping ofglasswork. Two of these lots bear the intriguing provenance of once belonging to thecollection of Carl Lindgren, a Swedish sea pilot and businessman who spent a portion of hislife residing in China during the mid-1800s. Noteworthy of mention is a particularly rarebutterscotch-yellow overlay on white glass censer, of enviably smooth composition andadorned with interweaving mythical chilong.
The great variation in works of glass produced during the Qing dynasty speaks to theboundless creativity and sense of adventurousness that conspicuously lie at the heart ofChinese glass-making. Property from this sale offers an exciting opportunity for privatecollectors to acquire an example of this important and intriguing Chinese artform.

O ver 200 years ago, Tristram Bampfylde Freeman, a
London print seller, established an auction house in
Philadelphia to
“cherish the arts in the New
World.” We now invite you to
join Freeman’s as we embark
on a new adventure with our
inaugural auction in Hong
Kong. This specially curated
auction with our partners
at Lyon & Turnbull features
an important Chinese
Ming Dynasty porcelain
cup bearing a pre-sale
estimate of $3,000,000 to
6,000,000 and will be held
at the Liang Yi Museum on
Hollywood Road during the
prestigious Asia Week Hong
Kong 2016.
“The burgeoning art market
in Hong Kong, combined
with both companies’
success with attracting and selling to new clients in Asia, made a
joint auction venture in Hong Kong the next logical step to better
serve these collectors,” said Paul Roberts, president of Freeman’s
and vice chairman of Lyon & Turnbull. Freeman’s has enjoyed
tremendous success attracting the attention of the international
market over the past few
years under the guidance of
department head Richard
Cervantes. Collectors have
traveled the globe to attend
auctions of Asian Arts in
Philadelphia, resulting in top
prices for prized works such
as Fu Baoshi’s ink on paper
work “Depicting Tao Yuanming,”
which sold for $413,000, a
large and very rare Imperial
Ge-type moon flask that
realized $903,750, and an
Imperial white jade seal,
Qing dynasty which brought
a spectacular $3,513,000.
Known as the Thornhill Stem
Cup, the Ming Xuande
(1426-35) mark and period
blue and white cup is a rare
masterpiece, seldom seen outside museum collections.
The motif of flying dragons was popular in the Yuan dynasty but
was revived in the Xuande dynasty as can be seen in this case.

The five-clawed dragon flies amongst flames, chasing the
eternally flaming pearl, above a sea with crashing waves tipped
in white and rocks seen around the base. The stem cup was
displayed for the first time in more than 20 years at Asian Art
London in November 2015 and is now making its way to the
US before the Hong Kong sale.
Be a part of our inaugural auction in the Asian art center of the
world. Consignments of important Chinese porcelain, bronze,
jade, and ceramics from Ming, Qianlong, and Republic era
China as well as scholars’ objects are now welcome.
