ASCE 2011 Geo-Institute Summit, St. Louis, MO, July 15-16
As President of FES and active member of the ASCE Suncoast Branch, Mr. Scott Parrish, P.E. was
recommended to attend the ASCE 2011 Geo-Institute (G-I) Summit. Mr. Parrish had this to say as a result of
the conference:
The 2011 Geo-Institute (G-I) Summit was well attended with approximately 115 very talented geotechnical engineers from all across the country including representation from Alaska and Hawaii. The geotechnical engineers in attendance included students, professors, consultants, army corps engineers, and geotechnical contractor engineers. Since the G-I organization is relatively new specialty institute created by the ASCE in 1996, the summit focused on increasing local group and individual involvement in the G-I. The general format of the summit was a collaborative roundtable type of discussion where the group shared ideas and personal experiences on ways to improve local G-I involvement, which will be presented to the board of directors for action and implementation. Although there were several topics and ideas discussed, the following three action items were decide to be the most important by an overall popular vote.
• Improve the G-I website to make if more user friendly and increase the available resources to the G-I members. • Develop a geo-professional outreach kit for G-I chapters to use in outside activities (i.e. engineers week).
• Revamp the G-I Speakers Bureau to be more effective and recognized.
Overall, the 2011 G-I summit was a great forum to network with geotechnical engineers from around the country and hopefully the recommendations identified during the summit will help to improve the G-I involvement

WHAT IS WTS???
Recently I, Molly Williams, P.E., of Stantec Consulting Services, Inc., discovered an organization, Women’s
Transportation Seminar (WTS), and would like to share some information about WTS with you. WTS is an
international organization of women and men with chapters all over the country including the Tampa Bay
chapter. Here’s some information about WTS from their website:
Founded in 1977, WTS is an international organization dedicated to the professional advancement of
women in transportation. Boasting roughly 4,100 members - both men and women - WTS is helping women
find opportunity and recognition in the transportation industry. Through its professional activities,
networking opportunities, and unparalleled access to industry and government leaders, WTS is turning the
glass ceiling into a career portal.
WTS does a great deal. To fulfill its mission of advancing both the transportation industry and the
professional women who are a growing part of it, WTS gives its members all of the necessary tools:
• Access. WTS provides unprecedented access to the highest levels of the transportation industry (in
fact, many WTS members are top leaders in the industry).
• PB/WTS Eno Foundation Fellowship. The Eno Fellowship reserves a space each year for one
female member of WTS to attend the Eno Transportation Foundation's leadership development
conference. The conference held in Washington, D.C., offers emerging transportation professionals
the opportunity to meet the nation's top policymakers and transportation leaders; become familiar
with the development and implementation of transportation public policy; and learn how to influence
those policies.
• Scholarships. Logistical barriers can sometimes stand between worthy candidates and their
objectives. WTS grants four scholarships every year to assist young women who aspire to
professional careers in transportation.
• Leadership Training Program. This program selects 14 mid-career participants each year for
personal training and interaction with leading industry professionals. Challenging their analytical and
creative skills, program leaders mentor participants in tackling case studies and exercises dealing
with complex transportation issues of people, policy, and politics.
• WTS also hosts and Annual Conference attracting scores of the top names in transportation each
year; presents Annual Awards; provides a Career Center and opportunities for Professional
Development and Programming; and maintains an International Membership Directory of
Women-Owned, Minority-Owned and Disadvantaged Enterprises empowering members to obtain
critical information, solicit career advice and discover emerging opportunities. Available only to
members.
WTS will be participating in the ASCE Bar-B-Que and Chili Cook-Off on September 24th at Oscar Scherer State Park and hope you will come out
and join us!
