From the Principal’s Desk…. Responsibility
As one of our core values, we endeavor to develop this in our students. At Gordon PS students are responsible for their actions and are praised and held accountable for these actions. As parents we have a significant role to play in developing and encouraging responsibility in our children. Here are 4 tips.
1) Reinforce independent, responsible behavior specifically and immediately.
We all know that our kids get more attention for negative behavior than for positive. Reinforcing positive behavior not only rewards kids, it also helps them learn what they can do in a similar situation to earn that reinforcement again.
2) Ignore low level inappropriate behavior and allow logical, natural consequences to occur.
Most of kids’ inappropriate behaviors are mildly to moderately inappropriate—think whining, procrastinating, forgetting, complaining and so on. The best response to these kinds of behavior is no response. With this, logical consequences happen. For example, siblings who fight and argue are left to work it out amongst themselves. The child who chooses not to complete their homework (or project) is confronted by her teacher.
3) Tell them once and allow them to respond. Follow through with the appropriate consequence.
We have all heard people say, “I had to tell my child 5 times”. State your request once and allow your child to respond. Expect them to make some irresponsible choices. It’s part of the learning process. When they do, follow up with appropriate consequences, and then move on.
4) Respond appropriately to your child.
An effective parent systematically provides appropriate consequences to their child’s behavior. For example, when you see good behavior, reinforce it with a positive response. When your child misbehaves, briefly ignore the behavior or apply a logical consequence.
Soccer
Well done to the 50 students who participated in the Ballarat Futsal Championships. The students were fantastic on and off the court. We had a few teams make the grand final and most made the qualifying finals. Thankyou to Michelle for assisting us with the coaching on both days. Thank you to Mrs Stasse for her all of her assistance on Tuesday. Also a big thankyou to Ms Lulu for investing so much time into our students to get them to the competition.
Sickness
Thankyou to the community for your patience of late. Staff have proven they are human by catching the dreaded bugs going around all schools at present. This has caused some inconvenience to classes as it is very difficult to find replacement teachers at the moment as they are all booked. Thank you for your patience, this season will soon pass.
Father’s Day Stall
Next Thursday, 31st August, we will be holding a Father’s Day stall where students will be able to purchase a gift for their father, grandfather or other special person. Notes will be going home with more details later in the week.
