SAP on AWS Use Cases & Customer Case Studies
SAP Training and Prototyping Systems on
AWS Background
Large global SAP customer
Challenges:
Existing SAP training and prototyping landscapes hosted
on physical UNIX servers too expensive
Existing infrastructure not flexible. Not able to easily
create additional temporary landscapes
The Solution:
Capgemini migrated existing two training and one
prototyping landscapes to AWS
35+ systems and 30TB of data migrated
Estimated savings approximately $18K p/month
(36% reduction in cost )
Able to create additional temporary landscapes and only
pay for the additional resources when they are needed
“Estimated savings approx $18K
p/month (36% reduction in cost
compared to traditional physical
UNIX infrastructure)”
SAP Business All-in-One on AWS Background
Merrifield Garden Center, one of the largest and most
complete garden nurseries in the US with over 750
employees, is using SAP Business All-in-One on AWS to
manage inventory, purchasing and accounts.
Challenges:
A new SAP Business All-In-One ERP customer
Limited IT resources
Needed a fully managed solution
The Solution:
Outsourced SAP implement and operations to Protera
Technologies
Use the AWS cloud as a utility computing environment
Leveraged multi-datacenter infrastructure at no additional
cost
“Our IT operations were simply not keeping
pace with the rapid growth of our business,”
said Bryan Moore IT Director at Merrifield
Garden Center. “Running our SAP Business
All-in-One solution on AWS, with systems
integrator Savantis and managed services
provider Protera, provided dependable
infrastructure and offered an affordable
solution that enhanced security and the
flexibility needed to scale up and scale down
during seasonal demand swings.”
SAP Business Objects BI on AWS Background
Emergency Medicine Business Intelligence (EMBI) provides HIPAA
compliant analytic tools for hospital emergency departments to monitor
productivity, utilization and patient care
Challenges:
Limited IT resources
Need for greater scalability
Better manage costs by turning capital expenses into variable operating
expenses.
The Solution:
Development of the solution involved use of Microsoft SQL Server 2008
R2 Standard and SAP BusinessObjects.
Leveraged implementation partner Decision First Technologies
Utilized SAP Business Objects “out-of–the-box” analytics dashboard
and key performance metrics solution monitors and benchmarks every
aspect of a hospital’s emergency department (ED).
As of February, 2012, EMBI had eight hospital emergency departments
live on their platform.
“Cloud computing allows hospitals the ability
to buy mission critical software and hardware
as a service instead of trying to manage
demand internally,” said Scott Richards, CEO
at EMBI. “Deploying SAP Business Objects
BI solutions on AWS, with solution provider
Decision First Technologies, allows us to
leverage industry-leading business
intelligence toolsets to provide our customers
web-based, on-demand, key performance
metrics they need to manage their operations
and business. With these solutions our
emergency department clients are able to
focus on providing a higher level of service to
their customers.”
SAP Hybrid Deployment on AWS Background
Lionsgate manages one of the most prestigious and prolific libraries in
the entertainment industry with nearly 13,000 titles, a diverse portfolio
of businesses, and an exciting, commercially potent feature film slate
of approximately 12 to 15 releases per year
Challenges:
Expanding infrastructure and costs
Increased enterprise application workloads
Lack of data center space
Needed ability to rapidly provision servers
Desire for cost efficient disaster recovery & high availability
solutions
The Solution:
Performed an initial POC to evaluate the viability of the AWS cloud
for hosting their SAP systems
Successfully migrated their DEV and QAS landscapes to AWS US-
West region
Currently planning the migration of their PRD landscape to AWS
Saved an estimated $1M+ over three years
since starting with AWS in 2010
Successful creation / integration of SAP
Landscape in the Cloud
Successful Integration of SAP Instances
with Local Applications
SAP Disaster Recovery (DR) on AWS Background
A worldwide leader in the supply of cellulose, fibrous and plastic casings.
Viskase has served for more than 85 years as the meat industry's
distinguished choice for premium quality products, unmatched service and
innovative meat formulation, processing and packaging solutions
Challenges:
Required better SLA’s for system up-time, Disaster Recovery, and
telecommunications
External auditor identified lack of DR solution
Required a fully hosted environment and a reliable disaster recovery site
for business continuity
Required an infrastructure that can support a global user base for
primary and DR site
Limited technical SAP experts in-house for 7x24x365 support
The Solution:
Leverage services of an SAP-certified Hosting partner / AWS partner -
Protera Technologies
Created a Virtual Private Cloud
Implemented database replication to DR database running on AWS
