Annual Celebration Dinner SS
2011 Celebration DinnerS S
Welcome from the Celebration ChairsIt is an honor to welcome you to Bi-Cultural Day School’s 55th Celebration Dinner. All of our honorees are being recognized for the very important work they do on behalf of our school and community.
While the deeds of many make our school what it is, tonight we honor a select few: Dina and Paul Berger as our Guests of Honor, Ambassador Daniel Benjamin as recipient of our Alumni Award, Morah Yonat Tucker, Rabbi Yehuda Tucker and Rabbi David Walk, as recipients of the Jane Shoztic Memorial Award, and Mia Weinstein as recipient of our Young Leadership Award. Through their efforts and actions, each of these inspiring individuals has qualitatively added to the Bi-Cultural Day School mission of Jewish continuity.
A successful school does not run itself. It is powered by dedicated professionals, board members, parents and volunteers. We would like to express our appreciation to the members of the Celebration Committee, the Journal Committee and the staff who played a vital role in contributing to the creativity and success of tonight’s event. It has been a pleasure to work with these talented people in planning this Celebration.
We thank our generous supporters for their contributions that enable our administration and teachers to transform dreams and vision into the wonderful reality that our children experience at Bi-Cultural. This commitment by you, our families and friends, will ensure that our children become part of future generations of Jewish leadership.
Enjoy this evening’s festivities. Join us in celebrating all that is spectacular and unique about our students, our children, our community and our school.

Dr. Paul and Dina Berger are true and dedicated leaders at Bi-Cultural Day School, in the Jewish community and in the community at large.
Paul, a radiation oncologist who holds three post-graduate degrees—doctor, lawyer and MBA—is immediate past president of Bi-Cultural’s board of trustees (2006-2009), and for ten years prior served on the executive board in key positions.
Among his many accomplishments, Paul is former Chief of Radiation Medicine at Bridgeport Hospital and a past director of its Norma Pfriem Cancer Center. He has also been an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University School of Law.
Dina, an attorney and business owner, has served on the board of Congregation Agudath Sholom, been a longtime leader of the UJA/Federation of Westport-Weston-Wilton-Norwalk, and is a past member of the Town of Westport Conservation Commission.
The Bergers’ commitment to Bi-Cultural has extended long past the graduation of their three children from BCDS. Our school and our community have been the fortunate beneficiaries of their vision, generosity, tireless efforts and tremendous talents.
Dina and Paul BergerGuests of Honor
Morah Yonat and Rabbi Yehuda Tucker, our dynamic Israeli duo, are the ideal of what Shlichut should be about: creatively and effectively bringing the knowledge, love, and spirit of Israel to the Diaspora. For the past eight years, they have given tirelessly to our school and our community through teaching, communal programming, and making personal connections with adults and children alike.
Morah Yonat is a uniquely talented teacher who brings her love of Judaism, her love of Israel, and her love of children with her into the classroom each day. The results are creative and dynamic interactive lessons.
Equally laudable are Rabbi Tucker’s enthusiasm and dynamic teaching style that makes learning interesting and exciting for students. His sense of humor and ability to interact with different types of students has enabled him to build many meaningful relationships.
Yet, what the Tuckers bring to our school is much more than that which they teach in the classroom. They are central in the planning and running of almost every Israel and holiday school-wide program. These informal educational programs on holidays, Yom HaShoah, Yom HaZikaron/Yom HaAtzmaut bring a new level of creativity to our school by involving students in art, singing and dancing in a unique style reflecting Israeli culture. Morah Yonat and Rabbi Yehuda - working in tandem - provide the vision, insight, imagination, knowledge, organization and technical skills to make these programs successful and deeply meaningful.
With equal verve and commitment, the Tuckers have made their mark on the community as a whole. They have brought many of the aforementioned programs to the community. Indeed, the community’s celebration of these special days will forever reflect their contributions.
Morah Yonat and Rabbi Yehuda Tucker were born in Israel. Morah Yonat studied at the teacher’s seminary in Haifa. Rabbi Tucker graduated from Moreshet Yaakov College and received his semikha/ordination from the Mirrer Yeshiva. They and their four children Matanel, Tamar, Yair, and Noam will be returning to Israel at the end of the summer.

2011 Celebration DinnerS S
Rabbi David Walk has been a tireless teacher at Bi-Cultural Day school for the past 10 years, bringing passion and joy to his teaching and unwavering commitment to his students. In addition to classroom teaching, Rabbi Walk has accompanied the Eighth Grade trip to Israel for five years, sharing with them his knowledge of Jewish history and Zionism, his insight into Israeli culture, and his contagious love of the Land of Israel. In addition to teaching students at BCDS, Rabbi Walk has also taught “D’var Yom B’Yomo,” an adult education initiative that has met weekly at school for the past 10 years.
Rabbi Walk also serves as the Education Director at Congregation Agudath Sholom in Stamford where he contributes to the ritual and communal life of the congregation. At the synagogue, he teaches classes in the weekly Torah portion, Jewish history and philosophy, and a myriad of other subjects.
Born in Malden, Massachusetts, Rabbi Walk graduated from Yeshiva College. In 1983, he made Aliyah to Israel and served in the Israel Defense Forces. He was ordained by HaRav Zalman Nechemiah Goldberg and at Yeshiva Hamivtar in Efrat, Israel where he subsequently taught and served as director of the yeshiva.
Rabbi Walk has six children and nine grandchildren. Yehuda (now serving in the IDF) and Yishai are alumni of BCDS.
Mia Weinstein is an example of young leadership at its finest. Her service to our school, her synagogue, and the local Jewish community sets an example for others who want to give of themselves and contribute to Jewish life.
Mia became involved in BCDS’s Parents Association as soon as her first child began Kindergarten. She co-chaired the BCDS Auction for two years and soon became a PA Board member. Elected to a two-year term as President of the PA, Mia continued to energize the organization and bring creativity to the PA’s mission of supporting our school and strengthening the connection with our parent body. At the beginning of this academic year, Mia was nominated and elected to Bi-Cultural Day School’s Board of Trustees.
Mia is an active member of her synagogue, Temple Beth El in Stamford, where she received the Rose Rosner Award for volunteer service to the Sisterhood. She currently serves on the Temple’s Board of Trustees.
Mia is a graduate of the first class of Behrend Institute for Leadership, a program offered by UJF of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien and sits on the Board of the Women’s Philanthropy Division of UJF. Through UJF, Mia has been a volunteer reading tutor in a Stamford public elementary school for the past nine years.
Mia and her husband Lonny have lived in Stamford for nearly 14 years and have two children who are current students at BCDS, Emily (8th grade) and Eddie (5th grade).
