• Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority.• These rules must be followed at all times. • A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in
labs.• Safety is everyone’s responsibility
Before starting a lab
• Know the procedure, if unsure ask• Listen to Safety Overview• Tie hair up• Put on goggles and aprons• Role up long sleeves• Clear your lab space: only 1 lab sheet out• Clear aisles (no bags/backpacks)• Dispose of food• Assign Lab Roles
Lab Roles
• Purpose: structured labs = safe labs• Research Director: Reads each step of the procedure
aloud to group 1 step at a time, while performing the lab. Keeps group on task and safe
• Materials Officer: Gathers materials, cleans up, returns kit looking exactly the same as it was picked up. Performs the lab
• Data Recorder: Double checks measurements, records/shares data with the group. Posts data
• Communication Specialist: Asks teacher questions, Presents data/analysis questions to class
During Labs
• Be Responsible: No horseplay, practical jokes, pranks, etc.
• Follow all instructions, do not conduct your own experiments
• Do not begin until instructed to do so.
