Benefits of good window designWell-planned and protected windows improve comfort all year-round and reduce the need for heating in winter and cooling in the summer. Internal coverings can have a significant impact on energy efficiency and comfort: close fitting blinds or curtains with pelmets are highly recommended.
Child safety devicesTo comply with mandatory safety standards we supply child safety devices. The relevant device should be affixed to the wall, or architrave, to tension the chain or cord which reduces the risk of death or injury to young children.
ShrinkageFabrics for Bonded and Roman blinds, which are recognised to shrink, are processed through our specially designed fabric shrinking over to reduce movement after manufacturing and ensure your blinds retain their shape and quality for many years.
Custom stylesStyles in this brochure are a guide only. Variations or specially designed items are available upon request.
Chain operationChain operations are to the right hand side, unless otherwise specified.
Roman blinds
BattensIndestructible 6mm and 10mm nylon/fibreglass battens are lightweight and extremely flexible.
Batten spacingBatten spacing is calculated on our fully computerised machines, which are specially designed for Roman blinds. This ensures consistency and perfect line-up for multiple blinds with the same drop. The spacing is determined by the drop measurement of the blind. If blinds with varying drops are to have battens lined up, please specify accordingly. This may cause a later fading problem due to a smaller batten space becoming necessary at the base.
Cord SpacingMaximum 53mm apart – guarantees that the folds do not sag when the blind is pulled up.
Gathered base styleConsideration should be made when using this style in a bay or corner window application. Different width blinds may cause a variation in the drops.
Also consider privacy at pull up points, if in a recess. Difference from short point of scallop is approximately 150mm – slightly less when two scallops across width of the blind.
CordLong lasting, plaited cord eliminates tangling, especially when tying off at cleat. Cord may get soiled with consistent use – detachable cord allows laundering of same. Cord length is approximately 2/3rds of the total drop unless otherwise requested.
Cord LockHeavy duty cord lock allows you to lock off the blind at the desired height. The minimum headboard size is 30mm when a cord lock is applied. Cord lock is not recommended in application such as recess or corners, under pelmets or butting bays, due to the angle required to lock off.
HeadboardConstructed of medium density fibreboard (MDF), which is stable and does not warp. Fully upholstered so that no timber is exposed and fabric is taped to headboard with specially designed tape, so that no stitching is exposed. Headboard is 42mm projected x 19mm drop, unless otherwise requested.

Headrail systemIs an alternative to standard cord and cleat system – ideal for large, heavy blinds, providing ease of operation. It consists of an aluminium headrail, which is top fixed into our standard 42mm projection headboard. Complete with special brackets, this system is easily face fitted on an architrave or into a recess, but it cannot be fitted directly on top of the architrave, unless you increase the projection of the headboard by the depth of the architrave. You may install above the arch by a minimum of 120mm over standard 20mm projection architrave.
The chain is not used continuously. Pull front of cord to open blind, back of cord to close blind. If you feel resistance during the operation do not force the chain. Simply go back the opposite way. Beadchain cord hangs behind blind when blind is down. Operate smoothly to get optimum life from the product.
Pull Cord accessoriesChrome cleat and barrel are standard. Other options include; brass cleat and barrel, transparent cleat with wooden acorn, stained or painted barrel (with cleat of your choice).
PulleysNylon swivel pulleys give easy of operation and less friction on cords, resulting in longer lasting cord systems.
RingsUV stabilised rings, to ensure longevity of the operation of the blind, are attached to the back pockets.
LiningStandard lining is three pass blockout, colour ivory. Customer’s lining is not recommended. BQ Design’s lining has been extensively tested to work effectively with our special double sided tapes and has also been tested and proved to have minimal shrinkage.
Alternatives include:
• Blockout – colour white
• One pass – colours ivory and white
• Polyester – colour neutral. The polyester lining is perfectly suited to give a soft, light filtering effect, whilst still protecting your face fabric from environmental conditions.
Roller and Bonded BlindsMeasuringWe recommend face fixing on the architrave. We request that you provide architrave to architrave width measurement, which will be your specified pin measurement. Brackets should then be installed flush with the vertical edge of the architrave. Cloth measurement will be 14mm narrower on each side, therefore exposing this amount of architrave. Drop size provided should also be the architrave to architrave measurement and BQ will add for blind allowance. For recess measurements we ask that you provide recess opening sizes and request BQ to make allowances.
Maximum size: 2400mm width X 2400mm drop
Chain system componentsRobust aluminium roller tube – 40mm diameter tubes are used as a standard. Heavy duty, 43mm diameter tubes are used for blinds greater than 1800mm in width.
Easylock chain winder (direct drive) is smooth gearing, consistent and reliable in its operation.
Double bead chain, available in a variety of colours, is made from UV stabilised plastic. Alternatively, you may choose stainless steel chain for damper
environments such as bathrooms and seaside locations. Nickel plated brass, which is also silver in colour, is an economical option to stainless steel.
Spring loaded retracting pin for easy installation.
Dual bracket – accommodation fitting two blinds into one bracket allowing both a translucent blind and a blockout blind to be installed on the one window. Chains may be on the same side for both blinds or opposite sides.
Easy-link connector – allows multiple blinds to be operated by on chain control. Minimal gap between blinds.
Motorisation is also available.
Over-roll (Reverse Roll)BQ does not recommend or guarantee over-roll blinds. They are prone to rolling crookedly and may cause damage to edges. Over-rolled blinds may also ‘spring-out’ rather than rolling tightly against the tube.
Scotchguard Protector (“SCOTCHGUARD” is a trademark of the 3M Company).
Repels spills and stains to keep furnishing items clean and looking new for longer.
Home Range Fabric RangeChoosing a Home Range product is a quick and often less expensive alternative to ‘custom-made’ blinds. With a large range of sheer, screen and block-out fabrics available, you are more than likely to find a fabric that suits your customer’s needs.
We offer free swatches of fabric and sample hangers (for a nominal fee) by contacting our Customer Service team on (03) 9544 6299.
You can also check out a full list of available fabrics and colours by going to our website – www.bqdesign.com.au.
PelmetsBonded pelmetsAn alternative to upholstered pelmets. No padding, simply fabric bonded to medium density fibreboard (MDF) pelmet. If straight, can be finished with or without piping. If shaped, piping is recommended to neaten the base.
ConstructionEntire pelmet constructed of medium density fibreboard (MDF). Facia and returns are 6mm thickness, headboard is 12mm. A computerised router is used to cut standard shapes and the facia is bull nosed, resulting in a smooth rounded edge on the base. Pelmet is then padded out and upholstered.
Corner or bay windowStraight, Shape1, Shape 3, Shape 4 (if centre is made straight) and Shape 5. In each instance the centre section of the bay will be straight – shaping to outer sections only. Velcro tabs are supplied for butting pelmets to ensure a neat finish at the joins.
FaciaInner of facia is lined in a stiffened fabric, therefore concealing piping tails and fabric turnings, otherwise rubbed against by operation of drapes or blinds.
HeadboardCut 5mm narrower than returns to accommodate uneven walls. Top inner of headboard is painted in ivory colour, which provides better track and bracket fixing, rather than fabric lined. Top outer of headboard is ivory cotton lined, providing a neat appearance by concealing piping tails and fabric turnings.
InterliningRecommended for silks and lightweight fabrics. This process avoids discolouration of fabrics, the ivory cotton lining behind gives a truer colour and reduces obvious seams when fabric can’t be railroaded.
Maximum size3900mm width, if to be despatched by BQ, otherwise larger pelmets may be picked up. Alternatively, pelmets can be made in two or three pieces. We recommend three pieces to avoid a centre join and interruption to the pattern.
PipingAll piping is cut on the straight from selvedge to selvedge, except striped fabrics, which are cut on the bias, resulting in a diagonal stripe affect.
Railroading fabricWhen fabric is non-directional, we recommend turning fabric to avoid seams. Even where grain direction is visible, especially silk, we strongly advise railroading.
ReturnsThe following is recommended: 100mm IBM over single blind, 120mm IBM over double blinds, 150mm IBM over single track, 200mm IBM over double track.
Other quality products manufactured by BQ Design include: curtains, upholstered bedheads, bedspreads, cushions and accessories.
