Frictionistheforcethatactstopreventtwosurfacesincontactfromslidingagainsteachother.Whenfrictionoccurs,thekineticenergy(motion)oftheslidingsurfacesisconvertedintothermalenergy(heat).
Somecombinationsofmaterials,suchasiceonglass,haveaverylowcoefficientoffriction.Thatmeansthatthereisverylittlefrictionbetweenthem,andthereforealmostnoslidingresistance.Rubbertiresagainstahardroadsurfacehaveahighcoefficientoffriction,whichmeanstheytendtogripandresistslidingagainsteachother.
Discbrakepadsanddrumbrakeliningsaremadefrommaterialswhichhaveahighcoefficientoffriction.Theyalsoneedtohaveanabilitytoabsorbanddisperselargeamountsofheatwithouttheirbrakingperformancebeingadverselyaffected.
Astheheatinbrakepadsandliningsbuildsup,thefrictioncapabilityofthematerialandconsequentlyitsstoppingpowerreduces.Thisiscalledbrakefade,andminimizingorovercomingfadeisamajorfactorinthedesignofbrakesandthedevelopmentofbrakefrictionmaterials.
Brakefrictionmaterialswerecommonlymadefromasbestoscompounds,becauseoftheexcellentheatresistanceofthatmaterial,butasthathasnowbeenproventobehighlytoxic,asbestosisgenerallybannedandnolongerused.
Brakesarenowmanufacturedfromavarietyofdifferentmaterialsthatmaybe:

Thechoiceofcompounddependsontheapplication.Lighterpassengervehiclesgeneratelessheatinthebrakesthanheavyorhighperformancevehicles.Theoptimumbrakecompositionforanygivenvehicleorusewillthereforebeacombinationofweightedattributeswhichinclude:
