Dear Parents
This has been such a busy week and we have been so fortunate with the weather conditions.
The highlight has been Sports Day which was a wonderful day for everyone. Conditions were ideal and we were able to complete all events successfully. It was great to see all pupils doing their best, cheering on their House mates and friends in other Houses.
There was a wonderful turnout of parents and other family members. A big thank you to Mr Downes, our Leader of PE his PE staff and all other staff including Mr Marston and Mr Barrass for organising the car park, commentary box and all the equipment for the day.
The overall winning house was Stretton, Weston won the girls and Somerford the boys. Photographs will appear in the Summer term Sports Newsletter at the end of term. Thank you so much for everyone who contributed to our Defibrillator Appeal or who purchased a raffle ticket. An amazing £234 was raised on the day. The raffle prize of two tickets for a race meeting at Wolverhampton Race Course was won by Miss Conroy.
Educational visits out of school this week have included Year 7s visit to the Islamic Centre in Birmingham, the Music Share Concert in Lichfield and the ‘Harry Potter Author Event’ at the Wolverhampton Grammar School.
On Wednesday our Key Stage 2 Cricket Team played in a competition at Brewood Cricket Club.
This week Year 8 pupils have been having individual career interviews as part of our Careers programme. These continue next week.
On Wednesday I was delighted to welcome back to Brewood Mr George Parry who was Headteacher here from 1985-1997. He had a tour of the school, met staff and pupils and reminisced about his time here. He was so positive about the school and said that he had ‘enjoyed every minute’ of his visit. We are now entering the last four weeks in school. The
highlights next week include: Monday 24th June A group of Year 8 girls visit Jaguar Land Rover for ‘Women in Engineering’ Workshop.

Young People, Social Media and Mental Health
Barnardo’s has published a report looking at what
children, young people and practitioners say about
the impact of social media on mental health and
wellbeing and the social media experiences of
vulnerable children in the UK. Findings from 80
Barnardo’s practitioners include: 79% said that 11
-15 year olds that they work with have found
cyberbullying impacted their mental health and
wellbeing. Case studies and focus groups with
children and young people found that those with
additional life challenges are more susceptible to
the negative impacts of social media as they are
more likely to experience isolation from friends
and family.

Fundraising Event for Ben Cooper
Last Friday (14th June) we held a non-uniform day for our ex Head Boy Ben Cooper to raise money for Malaria Consortium which aims to reduce the spread an prevalence of tropical diseases in Eastern Africa and South East Asia.
An amazing £371.42 was raised by pupils. Ben was awarded the cheque in ‘Sing Up’ on Thursday (yesterday). A message from Ben
‘It has been an absolute pleasure for me to reconnect with Brewood CE
Middle School over the course of my fundraising activities for my Danube
source to sea expedition. Walking through the same halls and seeing some
of the same faces reminded me of just how special this school is, and how
much my experience here has had an influence on the years since I left.
I am backing two health based charities for my trip, charities that have been shown to be very effective at
reducing the impact of malaria and tropical diseases in both East Africa and India. They are both important to
me, having spent a lot of time in communities that are affected by these problems. To have Brewood Middle
invite me back, and to support me in this effort, is absolutely fantastic. I am incredibly grateful to them for their
support. To both the staff and the students, thank you so much! And, to the Yr 8's that I spoke to who are
preparing to leave and move up to Wolgarston, good luck!
Love, Ben Head Boy, 2006/07

Morgan 6EG - 5Km Park Run On the Saturday 15th June, Morgan took part
in a 5k park run to raise awareness for a
condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
Many people are waiting around 10-15 years
for a diagnosis for the condition which is a
genetic disorder in which the structure of
connective tissue is abnormal. This results in
abnormally fragile and hyper-extensible
tissues throughout the body.
Morgan who was diagnosed with the syndrome
in November last year, is on medication and
having physio and thankfully can now walk knee
brace and crutch free. He still has a lot of
pain if I takes part in PE or does too much
physical exercise.
Morgan completed the park run (dressed as a
zebra, the Ehlers-Danlos mascot) with his
family, walking and running the 5Km course
and was very proud of himself for completing
it. So far he has raised over £600 through his
justgiving.com/MorganBs page.
If you would like
more information
on the condition
please go to
www.ehlers-
danlos.org
Congratulations to
Morgan, friends
and family.

Islamic Exhibition
Our day at the Islamic Exhibition was very good and
we all learnt a lot of things about the Islam faith.
At the start we learnt about the faith and history
of the religion Islam. We learnt what the five
pillars are and what they mean to Muslims. We also
learnt how science is linked with the Islam faith. A
lot of really important scientists were Muslim.
When we was there we also saw some Mosques that
have been made exactly like the ones in real life.
Also they wrote all of our names in the Arabic language. There were loads of models that
showed us what they were teaching us about. They explained to us about family life also. They
told us things that Muslims do and what they do not do. At the end of the day we did activities.
By Amerik 7JD
On Thursday we went to an Arabic place in Birmingham, When we
arrived the instructors were telling us what we were to be doing in
our activities. We got to wear some Arabic costumes, like hats and
scarves. We learned that Muslims pray 5 times a day. We saw the
mosque in a handmade way (model). We learned about The Five
Pillars: Shahadah, Namaz, Roza, Zakat, Haj.
We did word searches then we received certificates. We had to put
our names down then they would go round and put our names in
Arabic. Apparently no drugs are around in their country and back in
the day women weren't allowed to vote unless they were married.
They believed children should have an education. Muslims only
believe in one god and that is Allah, God be with you. They are very religious and they want to be
very good people.
On the 20th June 7TC went to an Islamic Exhibition in Birmingham. We were welcomed very
nicely. They taught us lots of different things about their religion We did activities like word
searches and mandala and they gave us chocolate. Before we had a tour of the information
centre, we learned about the 5 Pillars, Shadadah, Namaz, Roza, Zakat and Haj. In Islam they
have certain rules. The things they can’t do, sins are smoking, drugs, self harm and drinking
alcohol. In family life they also wear certain clothes. The father is the man of the house; he
would be the person who works. The mother can work if she choses to. If women have a problem
they go to female family and if men have a problem they go to male family.

Year 4 to 5 Transition Event and Family Learning
On Saturday 15th June, Year 4 children who are joining Brewood in September were invited to
attend our Rocket day. The children and their families made a rocket and learnt about energy.
During the morning session, the rockets were launched outside and the aim was to fire it as far
as possible. However, due to rain in the afternoon, the rockets were launched down the KS2
corridor.
We have organised these sessions for the last 10 years now as they prove to be very successful.
It allows the children to enjoy learning about science in a lab and it also allows parents to see
their child learning in a classroom environment.
We have worked with Mark Walton (Hands on Science) for over 10 years. He really is a pro at
making and launching rockets!
We look forward to welcoming the new Year 5 in September as they were a really enthusiastic
group of pupils.

Our visit to Jaguar Land Rover
On Wednesday 12th June, nine Year 8 pupils went to Jaguar
Land Rover. When we arrived, we were spoken to abut
engineering and jobs offered at JLR. Then we toured the
factory and learned about what happens there. It was very
interesting o find out exactly what happens and to see all the
workers. In the afternoon we were set the task to build a
model version of a car engine, we were put into two groups.
The task was very challenging and the Brewood boys group won
overall, as they were the quickest to finish the engine.
We really enjoyed the visit and learnt a lot of new skills
throughout the day. The visit has encouraged a lot of us to
become engineers in the future.
