CLUB COURSE: CLUB COURSE: CLUB COURSE: CLUB COURSE: CLUB COURSE: We are in the process ofreplacing damaged ornamental grasses withnew ones as money allows. We have noticed afew sand traps that we feel have either gottentoo compacted or been contaminated by siltand debris from all the storms over the past fewyears and will be adjusting them as necessary. You will see us probing and adding sand asneeded or taking sand away from some of thefaces that may have way too much sand. Thisis an ongoing problem dealing with southFlorida weather. However, you must realizethat the bunkers are hazards and should beavoided when analyzing your ability to play outof them. Play away from them or take moreclub if your nemesis is the dreaded sand.

December 3 rd. The event received greatparticipation and a similar event will be heldon January 14th. The OCWGA also played threeleague events in December including the startof the Old Boca Cup. Matches for the Old BocaCup will continue through January.
The Men’s, Women’s & Senior ClubChampionships are all scheduled in Januaryand promise to have some compelling golf. Weinvite all members to participate in any and allevents they can. We will continue to havecouples’ mixers, both men’s and ladies mixersas well as a variety of other events for yourenjoyment.
We will also continue to host equipmentdemonstration days featuring manufacturerssuch as Titleist, Taylor Made, Ping, Callaway,Adams & Cobra.
The Old Course will again host The AllianzChampionship the week of February 4th. Thetournament dates will be February 8th – 10th.The Old Course Member Pro-Am will take placeMonday, February 4th.
We do ask that you please keep in mind themaintenance and care of the golf course. Withball marks becoming more prevalent on thegreens, please do fix your ball mark along withone other. This way we can ensure the greensstay in fantastic shape for everyone.
Working with Phil Peterson, the superintendent, we have hit the golf course hard to try torecover some of the growth from this summer despite the 90" of rain. We had a recentwarm spell that brought back the color along with a few light rains that helped release thefertilizer we put out. We have changed out the divot mix in the golf carts to a 50/50 blendthat turns darker to the eye after a day or two so all the divots will not be so visible whenyou play your rounds. The Allianz is coming up in early February so the staging equipmentfor the tournament will be pulling in mid-January at the end of the driving range. Set upwill begin either the week of the 14th or the following week of the 21st. We ask for yourpatience once again as they put in the bleachers and towers around the course.

Winter is here and the holidays for the mostpart will have passed now, so the focus is onall the major members’ tournaments to partakein on both golf courses. With play at its peaknow we still need to address the rules of eachcourse for cart traffic. All warm season turf isat its most vulnerable in the winter months insouth Florida due to lack of sunlight hours, cooler temperatures that do not let itrecuperate as fast as summer time and theamount of traffic this time of year. We tookthe ropes down on both courses to present amore pleasant day of golf. With that, there areonly a few simple rules to follow. At theapproach ropes or markers in front of thegreen, all carts must proceed to the cart pathsprovided. There is no crossing either markersby anyone. Handicap players, designated bythe blue handicap flags provided, may pull upto the yellow markers around the greens onthe Club Course and balls on the Old Course.
However, that does notmean to drive over theropes to get to them. Youmust come in around theside perpendicular to thegreen (HANDICAPPLAYERS ONLY). Also, to properly protect thesurrounds, you should park to the outside ofthe markers, not between the marker and thegreen’s surface. Last week we had a memberpark his cart in the middle of one of the greenson a par 3. His playing partner two holes later, drove up on another par 3 on the collar andparked. If this continues, we will be forced topurchase 13,000 linear feet of rope for bothcourses. Next, ball marks are the responsibilityof the player. Please fix your own mark. Wewant your rounds to be enjoyable and filledwith pride in the quality of the conditions weare trying to maintain for you each day. Thankyou for your cooperation.

The first line of defense fora lob is an overhead... thereis no other shot that is moreof an equalizer for a lob!Having a good overheadsends your opponent the
message that the lob will not work. Eliminating a shotyour opponent can hit causes them to have to rethinktheir strategy and takes away the option of the lob.
If you and your partner are at the net and youropponents are hitting deep lobs that prevent you fromhitting effective overheads, your team should playcloser to the service line.
If at some point during the rally you have anopportunity to hit the ball short, do so. This will makeit more difficult for your opponents to hit a successfullob because there will be less court into which youropponents can hit.
If you are not able to hit effective overheads, andhitting the ball short or playing closer to the serviceline does not work, then you and your partner shouldplay two back.
You have an arsenal of defenses against the lob... youjust have to play smart!
