“The impact of my experience in the Buckley Public Service
Scholars program is that it helped me apply the knowledge I gained in the classroom to help improve the Chapel Hill community, the state of North Carolina and also my hometown of Yaounde by serving them. To me, serving other people and putting others’ needs first is what humanity is all about.”
» Sheila enoh “As an international student, being involved in the Buckley Public Service
Scholars program has really brought me different, yet exciting, outside-classroom learning experiences. It was more of an experience that in this big, big world, there were so many things I can do and contribute as an individual. Everyone can make others live better and smile.”

“BPSS has allowed me to explore outside of the UNC
‘bubble’ and be a part of the larger Chapel Hill community.”
» Min KiM “My time as a Buckley Public Service Scholar has been a defining experience of my four years at Carolina. It has allowed me to continue
my passion for ESL teaching and addressing Latino issues in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro community. I have been able to participate in enriching classroom experiences that demonstrate the important ties between scholarship and service. Finally, it has given me the opportunity to meet others who share my commitment to service.”

Carolina students have an amazing
way of giving back. Whether it is
connecting work in the classroom to
making a difference in the community,
developing innovative solutions to
practical problems in our local or global
communities, or supporting the efforts
of others, our students are making our
state, nation and world better.
For decades, we have demonstrated a collective, campus-wide
responsibility by engaging with and responding to the world around
us. Our students and faculty connect in untold ways to what is
happening beyond our walls. So it is fitting that we honor the 2013
graduating class of Buckley Public Service Scholars for what they have
done while at Carolina.
By expanding and applying their knowledge, skills and passion for
service, they prove every day that Carolina is the best place to discover,
learn and engage. They continue to bring to life our mission as a public
university to improve people’s lives.
As you read this bulletin, you will learn a little about how each scholar
and every project continues Carolina’s long tradition of service.
Thank you for helping us celebrate these outstanding students and
their accomplishments. They are an excellent example of what makes
Carolina exceptional in both academics and public service.
It is an honor to congratulate the
Class of 2013 Buckley Public Service
Scholars! During their time at
Carolina, these impressive students
have strengthened their commitment
to service while also expanding
their skills as they connected with
communities in North Carolina, across
the United States and around the world.
Throughout this bulletin, you can see the numerous ways these
students have committed time and talent to so many worthwhile
efforts. The Carolina faculty and staff, dedicated community agencies
and countless individuals with whom they have worked are also to be
commended for their unending support of these students and all they
have done in the name of service.
Begun in 2003, the program continues to grow, and this year, 9.2
percent of Carolina undergraduates are enrolled as participants.
In 2011, the Carolina Center for Public Service announced the
establishment of the Walter White Buckley Jr. Endowment, and it
is thanks to this endowment that Buckley Public Service Scholars
will be graduating for generations to come. Building on Carolina’s
tradition of excellence, the class of 2013 joins those who have gone
before them and sets the example for those who follow. Each of these
graduates has demonstrated commitment and passion in serving
through this program. I have no doubt they will continue to make
meaningful contributions as they leave Carolina dedicated to making
a difference wherever they are.
Welcome
“As an international student, being involved in the Buckley Public Service
Scholars program has really brought me different, yet exciting, outside-classroom learning experiences. It was more of an experience that in this big, big world, there were so many things I can do and contribute as an individual. Everyone can make others live better and smile.”

Program ComponentsThe BPSS program offers participants a structure to learn about and practice public service and engagement beyond the scope of traditional volunteerism, recognizing the value of organizational and policy-based service in addition to direct service. While in the BPSS program, many students are introduced to social entrepreneurship, community-based research, advocacy and philanthropy as important forms of public service. Special opportunities available to BPSS participants include: SMART Mentoring program, Philanthropy as a Tool for Social Change course, North Carolina Outward Bound School scholarships and the Buckley reflection series.
The program is open to all full-time undergraduate students with at least four semesters remaining at Carolina. To complete the program, students build a portfolio which includes the following program components:
» Orientation session » 300 documented hours of service » One service-learning course » Four skills trainings » Senior service reflection » Minimum cumulative GPA
Program Overview The Buckley Public Service Scholars program (BPSS) provides a framework for Carolina undergraduate students committed to making a positive impact through service. BPSS challenges participants to expand their understanding of service, connect academic and community-based experiences and build their capacity to help effect change. While
completing the program components, participants build portfolios reflecting their learning and unique experiences throughout North Carolina, the nation and the world.
Since 2003, BPSS has connected students with similar interests and provided special opportunities for leadership development and community engagement. This year,
participating students reported service with more than 1,000 organizations.
The 2013 graduating class of Buckley Public Service Scholars featured in this publication has reported 114,558 hours of service as of early April 2013. Of those hours, 69.5 percent were served in North Carolina, 13 percent in other states and 17.5 percent internationally.

“Being in this program has allowed me to realize that
being a ‘volunteer’ is more than just logging a few hours
each week. It’s long-term. It’s a choice. It’s a life change.

for the better!”

“There is no better teacher than experience. Therefore,
I want to challenge myself and everyone I interact with
to be the best version of a humanitarian, student and
leader grounded in the BPSS experience. This initiative
of paying it forward should transcend the ‘right here,
right now’ and be the foundation for a lifetime of
unconditional service. This is just the beginning. Now,
thanks to BPSS, we have the tools to make it happen and
make it worth it.”

“Participating in the BPSS program added a new
level of depth to my time at Carolina. This program
allowed me to more fully understand the blessings that
I have in my life and challenged me to look outside the
bubble of UNC and to interact with new people and
new cultures. I am thankful for the personal growth that
BPSS has encouraged and for the opportunities I have
been given to serve my neighbors: locally, nationally and
internationally.”

“The Buckley Public Service Scholars program opened
up a whole new aspect of UNC that I was not aware of
when I enrolled. However, through my activities, I soon
realized how much I enjoyed public service and its great
educational potential. The great value and joy I found in
public service through the program led me to slightly shift

“From Carrboro to Uganda, BPSS has allowed
me to build relationships around the world and has
provided me with the opportunity to develop the idea
of service that I brought with me from Upper School
into a relationship-driven process that has become an
integral part of my life.”

“My experience with the BPSS program has been unforgettable. This program has given me the opportunity to work with people of different generations, life situations and diverse backgrounds. Consequently, this fostered my personal development and helped me refine my interpersonal skills. I also enhanced my problem solving and critical thinking skills. Providing service to multiple organizations solidified my decision to major in psychology because I always knew I had a passion for helping others.”
Whitney aDaMS
“The Buckley Public Service Scholars program influenced my choices for extracurricular and summer activities. I chose to integrate my academic interests, traveling and cultural immersion, and service. BPSS has impacted how, why and what I engaged in at UNC and will continue to guide my large and even small, insignificant choices beyond Carolina.”
KelSey aho
“I used to think that short-term direct volunteering experiences like sorting cans at the food bank were the most effective ways for young people to make a positive change in their communities. While there will always be a need for service projects like that, through the Buckley Public Service Scholars program I learned to utilize my unique set of skills in my service projects and, in turn, maximize the impact I was able to make.”
Marlene eaton
“Being in the Buckley Public Service Scholars program definitely exposed me to a wide variety of opportunities and trainings that made engagement an accessible component of my UNC experience. I have learned a great deal about social justice, character and positive social change and would not be the same individual I am were it not for my participation in this wonderful program.”
priya balagopal
“My experience with the BPSS program has been one of the highlights of my college experience. The program’s philosophy of expanding the traditional definition of service encouraged me to engage in unique opportunities that have inspired me to pursue a lifetime of public service. Through my involvement with APPLES Service-Learning, the PITAP international graduate student program, psychological research and the Ackland Art Museum, I was afforded opportunities that changed the way I view myself, others and the world.”
iSabella caSSell
“The Buckley Public Service Scholars program has not only provided holistic and tangible goals for my service while attending Carolina, but more so has provided the most effective platform for networking and collaborating with other leaders and public servants on campus through its multiple components. Such connections have had the greatest impact on my years here as a student; providing both new opportunities to serve the greater Carolina community as well as building life long friendships.”
tia DaviS
“The Buckley Public Service Scholars program has led me to think beyond the surface of social issues. It has challenged me to to see needs as opportunities and facilitate collaborative work to understand the root causes of issues.”
jacob FruMKin
“The Buckley Public Service Scholars program has increased my awareness of the needs for service in the Chapel Hill community and has encouraged me to seek out a variety of service opportunities and have an impact on those in this community. Personally, my participation in the Buckley Public Service Scholars program has been most influential in fostering a compassion for those with developmental disabilities, which in turn has affected my interactions with the community beyond Chapel Hill.”
Michelle hicKS
“Participating in the Buckley Public Service Scholars program helped me to connect to the University and Chapel Hill community and to discover the challenges that my neighbors face. It taught me things that my classes could not, like the importance of patience, listening and open-mindedness. My experiences in this program have helped to shape my academic interests and my future plans.”

More from our graduates
“I have grown to be a person of service to my community and I have met people along the way who have pushed me to become an advocate for the communities
I represent. I know that when I graduate from UNC, I will leave a legacy and will continue leaving my Tar Heel imprint elsewhere. I am determined to live my life by empowering others to empower themselves for the overall betterment of humanity.”
» rita phetMixay
“BPSS has provided me with the opportunity to understand the
broader definition of service, allowing me to give back to the state, country and globe through direct service and policy development. I have learned how to develop and implement effective policy solutions to address pressing issues, thereby addressing the root cause of issues rather than making band-aid solutions to larger problems.”
