When you have all the answers about a building before you start building it, your answers are not true. The building gives you answers as it grows and becomes itself.
Antonin Raymond Letter to Phillipe B. St. Hilaire

But in the architecture of today we are trying to rediscover the original values, in direct response to the physical and spiritual needs of men, without being subject to prejudices which have restrained us for centuries, and of which the style of buildings (here) is the outcome.
Joshua Prince-Ramus TEDxSMU: Building a theater that remakes itself.

…so what we need to do is to stitch back creation and execution. And we need to start authoring processes again, instead of authoring objects.

steel
objective is simple: exploit the material - learn the vocabulary - understand the material properties and characteristics - explore the material as both structural system AND enclosure system - study the fabrication and installation processes - consider the spatial and experiential characteristics of steel buildings - develop an intuition

• Filter your processes through the material. • Examine your criteria through the lens of the material.

PROJECT with steel

design
Design is a creative activity whose aim is to establish the multi-faceted qualities of objects, processes, services and their systems in whole life cycles.
design process
The design process is the series of steps taken to develop the multi-faceted qualities of objects, processes, services, etc.
project 1. ASCENT / DESCENT
Design a steel stair and pole tower for firefighters. It may be a lookout for forest fires, a candidate-training tower, or the everyday access to/from the apparatus floor of a fire station. The critical investigations will be the act of ascending/descending and the details of connection (material, programmatic, and spatial) at each landing/level/platform. Investigate steel as the main building material both structurally and expressively. All structural components will consist of conventional or custom steel sections (tubes, angles, channels, W-sections, etc), sheet metal, steel cables etc. that will be applied to a conclusive structural system.
project 1. ASCENT / DESCENT
The remaining criteria are as follows: 1. The tower shall achieve a minimum height of 24’ and a maximum height of 30’. 2. The stairs (rise/run) and handrails must comply with a current code of your choosing. 3. The tower must include both stairs and a fireman’s pole, and the stair tower may include any one other single element.
project 1. ASCENT / DESCENT
WHY: 1. Define the problem. 2. Define your criteria. 3. Develop your objectives. 4. Don’t guess. Discover.
project 1. ASCENT / DESCENT
WHAT: 1. Develop ‘hunches’. 2. Define your palette. 3. Take positions. 4. Test your objectives. 5. Don’t guess. Work.
project 1. ASCENT / DESCENT
HOW: 1. Translate your positions into space. 2. Test your strategies. 3. Exploit the material. 4. Repeat.
