cums 2012‒2013 32 cums 2012‒2013
It gives me great pleasure to introduce the CUMS 2012–13
season, which brings together an exciting and varied
programme of over 40 concerts exploring music from
Monteverdi and Gabrieli to Gershwin and Bernstein.
Our Great Conductors series continues this year with visits
from the legendary conductor Sir Colin Davis, who explores
Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 with the Cambridge University
Chamber Orchestra, and Sir Roger Norrington, who conducts
Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis at King’s in January.
In March the Cambridge University Chamber Choir and
Cambridge University Collegium Musicum team up with His
Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts to perform music by
Monteverdi and Gabrieli.
CUCO celebrates the hundredth birthday of Benjamin
Britten – who was a regular CUMS conductor between 1959
and 1971 – with performances of the Cello Symphony and the
Suite on English Folk Tunes. The orchestra is on a high,
having just released its wonderful new recording of Mozart
and Haydn with Sir Roger Norrington.
Under its Principal Conductor Martin Yates the CUMS
Symphony Orchestra performs Rachmaninov’s Piano
Concerto No.3 at London’s Cadogan Hall with acclaimed
pianist Peter Donahoe, and gives the world première of Dead
Resonance by our Composer-in-Residence Ewan Campbell. It
also looks forward to performing two Sibelius symphonies
with our Brenda Charters Conducting Scholar William Cole.
The CUMS Chorus explores three great works under
Stephen Cleobury’s baton – Haydn’s The Creation, Rossini’s
La Petite Messe Solennelle, and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast.
The CUMS Concert Orchestra looks forward to an exciting
programme including Mahler’s Symphony No.4 under Mark
Gotham, and the Cambridge University Wind Orchestra
continues to reach out to the local community with its
popular Concert for Schools. The Cambridge University
Lunchtime Concerts (admission free!) continue to showcase
the best of Cambridge’s musical talent for a growing and
enthusiastic audience.
Reflecting on the importance of CUMS’ work I was
touched to read a blog entry penned recently by one of our
horn players – a student on a one-year exchange programme
from the United States. He wrote:
‘There are quite a few good things about the opportunity of
studying at Cambridge. For me, the largest part of the
experience is the opportunity I’ve had to perform. At home,
I was the only horn player – one out of 1200 students. Here,
however, everything’s different. While not a music school in
purpose, Cambridge is fantastically musical; there are
opportunities to play everywhere. Last Saturday, I
performed Wagner’s Parsifal, Act 3 in an extravagant
concert at King’s College Chapel. The orchestra was made
up of the very best undergraduate players in the whole
University, and will probably be the best I will ever play in
unless I pursue a career in performance. This was a
particularly big event because the man in charge was
famous British conductor Sir Mark Elder. The concert itself
went fabulously. I had a very pronounced solo in the Wagner
and it went off without a hitch. I will remember this
concert for the rest of my life.’
Touching lives with the power of music is CUMS’ raison
d’être. I can’t begin to thank all those whose support, financial
and practical, has enabled us to plan the wonderful season
ahead. I look forward to sharing with you many moving
musical experiences in the year to come.Simon Fairclough

Introducing the CUMS ensembles
6 cums 2012‒2013
Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra is
Cambridge’s flagship orchestra. It attracts the
University’s very best musical talent, works exclusively
with distinguished professional conductors, and achieves
the highest possible standards. Recent highlights have
included a recording of Mozart and Haydn with Sir
Roger Norrington, Wagner with Sir Mark Elder and a
summer tour to Bordeaux.
CUMS Symphony Orchestra is the University’s finest
symphony orchestra. It performs a wide range of
repertoire under its distinguished principal conductor
Martin Yates, its undergraduate conducting scholar, and a
roster of guest conductors which has recently included Sir
Roger Norrington, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Richard
Armstrong and Libor Pesek.
CUMS Chorus brings together singers from town and
gown, and performs at least three concerts a year. The
Chorus often joins the Philharmonia Orchestra in King’s
College Chapel and enjoys regular international tours,
the most recent having been to Paris in April 2012. The
Chorus is directed by its principal conductor Stephen
Cleobury and occasional guest conductors.
Directed by Martin Ennis, David Lowe and Mark
Williams, the Cambridge University Chamber Choirprovides the best student singers with the opportunity to
perform at the highest possible level repertoire that is not
usually undertaken by the Cambridge chapel choirs.
There is an emphasis on secular music and on repertoire
that offers singers the chance to appear as soloists or in
small groups.
CUMS Concert Orchestra, formerly CUMS II, is our
second symphony orchestra. Since its establishment in
1921 the orchestra has always offered an opportunity for
the University’s best young student conductors and
soloists and in the past it has played under the baton of
Sir David Willcocks, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Edward
Higginbottom.
Cambridge University Wind Orchestra is an
ambitious wind ensemble, led by talented student
conductors, which performs repertoire ranging from wind
band classics to new works. Recent highlights have
included music by Bernstein, Dukas, Gershwin, Gorb,
Gregson, Hesketh, Holst, McNeff and John Williams.

Join the CUMS Supporters’ Circle
cums 2012‒2013 25
Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided unique
opportunities for successive generations of Cambridge
musicians. It has immeasurably enriched the cultural life
of the University and City, and, having launched many of
the biggest careers in classical music, it has played a
pivotal role in the musical world beyond.
CUMS receives no core funding from the University,
and income from ticket sales does not meet the full cost
of delivering a world-class musical education. The CUMS
Supporters’ Circle has been established to address this
pressing financial need.
All those who value Cambridge’s splendid musical
heritage, and want to maintain it for the twenty-first
century, are invited to join the Circle. Membership is
through annual donation. There are seven levels of
donation:
Friend: £50–£99 per annum
Donor: £100-£249 per annum
Friends and Donors enjoy
● contributing membership of the Society, entitling them
to priority booking for performances
● acknowledgement in CUMS concert programmes and on
the website
● invitations to drinks at each performance at West Road
Concert Hall
● the opportunity to buy a full season ticket
● regular updates on key CUMS projects and events
Benefactor: £250–£499 per annum
Principal Benefactor: £500–£999 per annum
All of the above, plus opportunities to sit in on selected
rehearsals
The Stanford Circle: £1,000–£2,499 per annum
The Vaughan Williams Circle: £2,500+ per annum
The Britten Circle: £10,000+ per annum
All of the above, plus the opportunity to be recognised as
the supporter of a specific activity each season.
To become a Member of the CUMS Supporters’ Circle,
please contact Christine Skeen, Secretary, CUMS
Supporters’ Circle, Cambridge University, 11 West Road,
Cambridge, CB3 9DP.
In helping us reach our targets, you will become part of
an extraordinary musical tradition.
Thank you.
CUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguished
university music societies in the world. It offers a world-
class musical education for members of the University
and local residents, nurturing the great musicians of the
future and providing performing opportunities for over
500 Cambridge musicians every year.
The Society has played a pivotal role in British musical
life for almost 170 years. It has educated such luminaries
as Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder, Sir John Eliot
Gardiner, Edward Gardner, Christopher Hogwood and
Robin Ticciati, has given world or UK premières of works
by Brahms, Holloway, Lutoslawski, Maxwell Davies,
Rutter, Saxton and Vaughan Williams, and has given
successive generations of Cambridge musicians the
experience of visiting conductors and soloists including
Britten, Dvorak, Kodaly, Menuhin and Tchaikovsky. Since
the 1870s, CUMS has enjoyed the leadership of several of
Britain’s finest musicians, including Sir Charles Villiers
Stanford, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Philip Ledger, and,
from 1983 to 2009, Stephen Cleobury.
In 2009 Stephen Cleobury assumed a new role as
Principal Conductor of the CUMS Chorus, and Sir Roger
Norrington was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor.
Martin Yates, ‘one of the most exciting and versatile
British conductors of his generation’ in the words of The
Times, joined the team as Principal Conductor of the
CUMS Symphony Orchestra; and a Great Conductors
series was launched with the objective of exposing CUMS
members to a succession of world-class visiting
conductors. In February 2010 CUMS entered another new
phase of its development when it merged with the
Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra and
Cambridge University Music Club. In October 2010 the
Society launched the Cambridge University Lunchtime
Concerts – a new series of weekly chamber recitals at
West Road Concert Hall showcasing the University’s
finest musical talent. In 2011 it merged with the
Cambridge University Chamber Choir which is directed
by Martin Ennis, David Lowe and Mark Williams. CUMS
continues to provide opportunities for the University’s
finest student soloists and conductors by awarding
conducting scholarships and concerto prizes, and it
actively encourages new music by running a composition
competition and premièring at least one new work each
year.
Recent highlights have included Wagner’s Parsifal (Act
III) conducted by Sir Mark Elder, a recording of Haydn
and Mozart symphonies with Sir Roger Norrington,
Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with Sir Richard
Armstrong, and Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand with
Stephen Cleobury.
