This collection of tunes includes most of the tunes Ive heard at sessions in Santa Cruz, anumber that Im told are played in sessions in other parts of the world, and some that I just likea lot Ive put the collection together without regard to copyright issues, as I have no intentionof selling the book, and I hope that whatever circulation it does receive serves to spark publicinterest in those composers whose work I was able to credit. To quote the introduction to thefine collection of tunes by the Pub Scouts; These are tunes which we have learned from many sourcesand sessions and comprise but a small part of the rich Irish music tradition. Since that tradition is groundedin the session where musicians learn and share tunes, we freely grant permission to copy, use, and enjoy thisbook
My sources for many of the tunes can be found in the bibliography. Many others were found onthe web as ABC files, and I transcribed a number of tunes from recordings. I have taken theliberty of rearranging quite a few of the tunes presented, sometimes, though not always, toreflect the way they are played in Santa Cruz sessions.
Many thanks to Galt Barber for countless hours of proofreading and assistance with the chords.Special thanks also to Janet Herman, Mark Boronkay, and George Grasso, and to the manyother musicians in Santa Cruz who have offered encouragement and support during thisproject
A few notes about this edition:
Notation:In the interest of legibility I have taken certain liberties with the notation. Slurs have beenadded to every triplet regardless of original notation. In addition, practically every triplet ona single tone has been replaced by a ~. In many cases, a double sixteenth followed by andeighth on a single tone has also been replaced by a ~. Both original notations usuallyindicate birls.
Accompaniment:The chords presented presume a guitar in standard tuning, and may or may not soundacceptable on other instruments or in other tunings.
