Dear Editor,I read with dismay the report on
the last City Council meeting andMayor Burr’s public apology. Itwould seem to me that the apologyshould be from the ill informed,rude attendees of the meeting TOMayor Burr. It was hard to believesome of the comments made. Mr.Partch stated that city decisionsare being made by a bunch ofpeople who don’t even live here.I wonder who exactly, by name,these mysterious people are? Ithink, by Charter, the mayor andCity Council members must beresidents. I believe that all themembers of the board of CenturyII are residents of our community.I would think Mr. Partch, a “hasbeen” Mayor, might know that. Mrs.
Domsch lives in Atwood. Mrs.Domsch is not a decision maker, sheis an administrator, and a good one.We are lucky to have her.
Mr. Sager just seems to be againsteverything, but the thing that struckme most was his apparent resistanceto the “adopt a plot” program to main-tain part of our beautiful park. Whatwould he have us do? Spend taxpayerdollars to hire someone? Or maybehe, as a good citizen, intends to do ithimself? What better way is there,than through community involve-ment to do any of these kinds ofthings?
I have said before, “If you are notpart of the solution, you are part ofthe problem.” sure fits in this in-stance.

Connie Squires was honored asthe 2007 Tri-State Antique AutoClub Queen at the Thresher Showheld July 26-29 in Bird City. Shewas officially recognized on Thurs-
day of the show.Mrs. Squires was born on April
28, 1958, at Burlington and nowlives in Goodland. She was theyounger of two children both to Eu-gene and Zadine Noel. Her brother,Terry, lives in Aurora, Colo.
She was raised in northeasternColorado and graduated from YumaHigh School in 1976. She is marriedto Marshall Squires. Her daughterKary (Erskin) Meyer and grand-daughter Audrey, live in St. Francis.She has two step children, Kimberly
Millet, Catoosa, Okla., andMarshall Squires, III, Aurora.Marshall’s children, Millet andBryson also call her “Grandma.”
The Auto Club Queen is a mem-ber and past director of the board ofthe Tri-State Antique Auto Club.

Individuals who show little or noempathy for others, and who con-tinually disregard and violate therights of others have what is de-scribed in the mental health field asan antisocial personality disorder.These individuals tend to be veryimpulsive with their actions and re-peatedly lie. Their behavior is oftenreckless, with little regard for theirown safety, and they do not thinkabout possible consequences forthemselves or others. With thiscombination of traits, such individu-als are sometimes described as lack-ing a moral conscience; this disor-der is the mental illness most closelylinked to criminal behavior. Stud-ies estimate that approximatelythree percent of adults in the UnitedStates have antisocial personalitydisorder, and it is about four timesmore common among males than
females. It is likely that the major-ity of those in prison for seriouscrimes, or repeat offenses, have thisdisorder.
Antisocial personality traits maybe apparent in childhood, but thediagnosed disorder is not applicableunder the age of 18 years. Defianceand rebellion are common in adoles-cents, and can be a major challengefor parents, schools and communi-ties. But even though these behav-iors are strongly associated withadolescents, the majority of teenag-ers do not develop antisocial person-alities. They do grow up to be wiseand mature adults, with a strongmoral conscience and empathy forthose less fortunate.
Nevertheless, there are some be-haviors that should always concernparents, such as a teenager who isfrequently truant from school, or
runs away from home. A child ofany age who deliberately destroysproperty, sets fires, or displaysphysical cruelty to animals orpeople should be of serious concern,and parents need to consult with amental health professional for helpin understanding and dealing withthese problems. As with many be-havior problems, early treatment isessential. As adults, these kinds ofvery serious negative behaviors be-come much more difficult to treat
