The 39th annual Cattle Baron’s Ball is the culmination of hard work, determination, dedica-tion, and generosity on the part of sponsors, donors, and com-mittee members. Our work will enable the American Cancer Society to maintain its mis-sion as the “Official Sponsor

BY KARLEY OSBORNStaff Writer
Until 1974, so the story goes, philanthropic femmes went
door-to-door to collect funds for the causes they held dear (presumably dressed in bell-bottoms and platform heels).
T h e n c a m e Ja c q u e Wynne, Pattie Hunt, and
the Cattle Baron’s Ball.“Jacque one day said,
‘You know what—why don’t we do something different?’ And so that’s really how it started,” Skye Brewer, one of this year’s co-chairmen, said of the ball’s founding co-chairs .
Pa r t n e r e d w i t h t h e American Cancer Society since its inception, the Cattle Baron’s Ball is the world’s largest single-
night fundraiser for the ACS. Although attend-ees can donate to specific ACS platforms by mak-ing a restricted major gift, Brewer estimates that 95 percent of funds raised are endowed directly to researchers. The best news?
“We have an agree-ment with the American Cancer Society that all of our money stays in North
Texas,” Brewer said. “The only way it ever leaves North Texas is if there’s lit-erally nothing else to fund, and that’s rare.”
This year’s auction book features eight research-ers who have been funded by the Catt le Baron’s B a l l : s e v e n f r o m U T Southwestern Medical Center, and one from Baylor Research Institute. Each grant-recipient ’s
focus is different: kidney, prostate, liver, or neuroen-docrine cancer; an inves-tigation of proteins; the development of targeted therapy models; immuno-therapy; and plant and fun-gal molecules that could one day be developed into drugs.
The varied focus of each researcher makes it clear: Cancer is huge. But so is the Cattle Baron’s Ball. To
date, the ball has generated nearly $48 million dollars toward cancer research.
“There’s not a better research organization in the country for cancer,” Brewer said. “American Cancer Society has pro-vided seed money to 46 people that have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. That’s pretty phenomenal.”
