MADRID V PRISON IN SOTO DEL REAL
•It was built in 1995.•It consists of 17 blocks (one of them for
women).•There are 1600 inmates. •557 Staff, 68 workers and 11 teaching
staff.•Educators provide inmates with jobs within
the prison environment.•Inmates can work but it is not compulsory.

•Our centre was created in 2000.•There are 300 students in 2014-15.•We have PRIMARY, SECONDARY education
and SPANISH for immigrants.•There are 8 classrooms and a computer room
in our building, but we also teach in other prison buildings.
•We have taken part in two European Projects.

CURRICULUM
• Primary education includes Natural and Social Sciences, Spanish Language, Literature, Mathematics, Arts, Physical Education and English as a foreign language.
• Lower secondary education provides students with a diploma obtained after finishing the compulsory education. It also allows them to continue their studies in higher education or vocational training.

•Spain has got 81 Penitenciary Centres.•Spanish Penitenciary System has
prisons for men, women and Psychiatric Hospitals.
•The total amount of inmates is 70,375 men and 6,159 women
•16,208 Prisoners on remand and 60,326 sentenced.
•The percentage is 191 inmates per 100.000 inhabitants.
SPANISH PENITENCIARY SYSTEM
It has got 3 grades: • First grade for the inadaptabled ones.• Second grade for every inmate as they enter
prison.• Third grade for those who have served
66%. They live in Open Regime.
• There´s neither Death Penalty nor life imprisonment in Spain.
• The longest sentence is 30 years. • Terrorists must serve the total, the rest may have permits
andleave in 3rd grade.
SPANISH EDUCATION IN PRISONS
• Every prison has got an Adult Education Centre.
• Each centre is ruled by the Ministry of
Education or the regional government.
• They offer Primary Education & Lower
Secondary Education
• Registration is optional but attending the
lessons is compulsory.
