Infiltration and run off
As land is developed, its infiltration
potential falls dramatically. Compacted
and impermeable surfaces can reduce
the rate and volume at which surface
water is drawn into the ground by as
much as 95%, increasing run-off and
often exceeding the capacity for sewers
and natural watercourses to cope.
Pollution
Large area hard surfaces like roadways,
car parks and service station forecourts
increase environmental contamination by
allowing petrochemical pollutants to be
‘washed’ into water catchment areas in
surface run-off.
Green and soft landscaping
Swales, ponds, marshes and other forms
of wetland are important water trapment
features and good SUDS practice will
integrate them, alongside engineered
below ground solutions, as part of a fully
considered sustainable drainage solution.
Pervious and impermeable surface provision
Hard standing surfaces like car parks can be made pervious with the application
of porous paving products that can be incorporated into an overall SUDS solution.
If impermeable surfaces are unavoidable, then source control systems following
SUDS principles can be used to channel and retard run-off.

How the system can make a difference
The Permavoid Pavement System
Permavoid is a geocellular system designed to provide shallow ground
water storage, attenuation or infiltration within a pavement structure.
It is used in place of a traditional sub-base.
With a 95% void ratio, Permavoid
is a highly efficient modular SUDS
solution that can be built up to a total
void volume depending on projected run
off values. Its unique jointing mechanism
means it has exceptional strength,
providing an interlocked ‘raft’ that will
support structural loads across the most
heavily trafficked areas.
Permavoid can be used directly below
Infilta block paving or Drain Asphalt
surfaces, or below impermeable top
surfaces in conjunction with a source
control system such as Permachannel.

Permachannel Innovative channel system
Interlocking, high strength sub-base
replacement. For use below Infilta,
permeable block paving or porous
asphalt surfaces.
Infilta is a rectangular block paving
system that allows infiltration of surface
water into underlying SUDS storage
structures. It incorporates 5mm spacers
to provide sufficient drainage between
blocks and is made from an open graded
sub-base that provides further void
volume for storing run-off. A tough,
durable paving surface, Infilta is
available in 8 colours.
A proven source control collection
system that also acts as a silt and oil
interceptor and treatment solution.
Permachannel is designed to be laid
with little or no gradient to ‘still’ run-off
and encourage silt deposition within
the channel. A weir and baffle outlet
separates oil and prevents silt deposits
entering the rest of the SUDS system.

Permavoid Biomat Additional oil retention
For use within Permavoid units,
Permavoid Biomat provides floating
pollution control. It consists of a low
density, high strength buoyant plastic
grid that traps and retains any residual
or emulsified oils that may be present
within the surface water. Permavoid
Biomat also provides a habitat for
microbes that digest and breakdown
oil deposits.
A non-woven, dimpled and
needle-punched geotextile that
retains hydrocarbon deposits while
allowing clean water to pass through.
Entrapped hydrocarbons from petrol
and oil are then biodegraded by
naturally occurring micro-organisms
in a self-cleansing mechanism.
The Permafilter Geomembrane is
a heavy-duty polypropylene membrane
that combines excellent chemical
resistance with robust performance,
even on non-smooth surfaces. It creates
a water tight seal that minimises the risk
of sub-grade softening in a wide range
of applications.

Brownfield developments
Not all brownfield sites are
contaminated, but even on those that
are, SUDS is still an option providing
care is taken during excavation to
avoid bringing pollution to the surface.
Indeed, shallow SUDS are preferable
to conventional drainage in these
circumstances because the likelihood of
disturbing deep contamination during
their installation is lower.
Reduced depth and excavation volume
Shallow application SUDS are quicker,
less costly and easier to install and
maintain. They also have a reduced
environmental impact because they
require fewer trips by road to transport
infill and rubble to and from the site.
