History & Introduction to Coal India Limited
Coal India was found in 1973 as coal mines Authority limited .In 1975 it was change into Coal India limited as a holding company with five subsidiary
1. Bharat Cooking Coal India Limited (BCCL,Dhanbad , Jharkhand)
2. Central Coalfield Limited (CCl, Ranchi, Jharkhand)
3. Western Coalfields limited (Nagpur region)
4. Central Mine Planning an Design Institute limited (CMPDI Ranch, jharkhand)
In 1985 two more subsidiaries were added:
5. Southeastern Coalfield Limited (SECL, Bilaspur)
6. Northern Coalfield limited (NCL, Siliguri)
Introduction
India is the world’s third largest coal producing country
Head office of coal India Limited is located at Kolkata
Contributes around 85% of coal production in India.
Employs nearly 4.25 Lakh persons and is the largest corporate employer in the country.
• Is one of the largest companies in the country, turnover begins around Rs.386.31 Billion in 2009-2010.
• Is one of the largest tax payer• The dividend for the fiscal 2009-10 is the largest ever paid by CIL. It
constitutes 35% of the paid –up equity of Rs.6316.36 crores.• During the previous financial year CIL paid dividend of 27% amounting to
Rs.1705.42 crores.
CMPDI
CMPDI (Central Mine Planning & Design institute Limited) an ISO company holds the pre eminent position as India’s one of the Largest consultancy organization offering full range services in the sphere of resources exploration and development in exploration, Mining, Coal & Mineral preparation, utilization and management, coal material handing arrangement
CMPDI coal is an consulting body under the CIL (COAL INDIA LIMITED ) that plans and designs the mining projects and allied engineering services undertaken by various subsidiary coal companies under CIL. It has the headquarters at Ranchi, the capital of newly formed state of Jharkhand.
Objectives
Planning identification, and qualification for mining industry .
To assist user in planning and introduction of electronics techniques.
• To provides field test facilities in the experiment mines to the various
technology development project.
Formulating long and short term strategies
Function
Monitoring the functions of the subsidiary companies.
Coordinating with the ministries of coal, ministries of railways, planning
commission etc.
Introduction of new technology.
Mobilization of resources
Accounting policies
Objectives of Electrical and Electronics Dept.
Calibration and repair of sensor and gas detectors.
Repair and maintenance of microprocessor based environmental monitoring
system of mines.
Test and repair of VHF communication sets, control card of HEMM
Indigenisation of imported control cards of washeries like Bhojudih, Rajarappa, and Kargil etc.
It also perform various R&D activities like research and various telecommunication system.
The heavy duty high capacity machinery such as dumpers, shovels, draglines etc. are fitted with HEMM (heavy Earth Moving Machines) cards. These cards need to repaired for minor problems. The ICs can be replaced and also the other components such as diodes, zener diodes, transistors, resistances etc.
IC testing
It perform the following function:-
1.Test function:-Test the IC in/out of circuit, performs V-I test, short/open/voltage test, IC interconnection test, short locator test or self test.
2. Search function:-Identifies an unknown IC in or out of the library.
3. Compare function:-Select various system operating parameters.
4. Configure function:-Use the test basic interpreters parameters.
5. Utility function:-Perform various life handling function.
Few example of IC used in Electrical & Communication part:-
Digital IC:-
1. CD4049 : 16 pins Hexainverting buffer
2. CD4013 : 24 pins Dual D type flip flop
3. CD4508 : 14 pins Dual 4 bit latch
4. CD4903 : 14 pin Quad 2i/p NAND gate
5. CD4538 : 16 pin Dual retriggerable Monoatable
Analog IC:-
1. LM124 : 14 pin Quad operational Amplifier
2. LM339 : 14 Quad comparator
Methanometer
Mathanometers are hand held devices and are used to measure the percentage of methane at a particular place in underground mines. It is very important device as it tells the percentage of methane. Presence of methane above a certain level is very dangerous, it can result in explosion of underground mines too. The maximum permissible level is 2.5% when the percentage reaches 2, the mines are evacuated and declared unsafe till the problem has been dealt with. This measure device is catalytic type. It needs a battery for it operation. It may be moving coil or digital LCD depending on the type of Methanometer.
It consists of a micro switch with an actuator of the device. It consists of a micro switch with an actuator arm to push buttons provide on the handheld device. The devices which are digital, make use of IC instead of moving coil set up. This device needs to be calibrated every 90 days as per the decision of the management for mine safety.

Automation in Mines
It is the use of control system such as numerical control, programmable logic control, and other industrial logic control systems in other application of I.T such computer aided technologies (CAD,CAM), to control industrial and process, reducing the need for human intervention.
Advantages :-
1. Replacing human operators in tedious tasks
2. Replacing human tasks that should be done in dangerous environment (fire,
space, volcano and underwater
3.Making the tasks that is beyond human capabilities such as handling heavy
loads
Disadvantage:-
1. Technology limits
2. Initial costs relative high. The automation new products require huge initial
investment.
Automation tools:-
1. ANN : Artificial Neural network
2. HMI : Human Machine Interface
3. PLC : Programmable logic Controller
4. Robotics
5. DCS : Distributed Control System
PLC
• NEMA, the National Electrical Manufacture Association defines PLC as – “A programmable logic controller is digitally operating electronic apparatus which uses a programmable memory for the internal storage of instruction for implementing specific functions.”
These are logic, sequence, timing counting and arithmetic, to control through digital or analog input and output operations in various types of machines.
Components of PLC:-
1. PROCESSOR OR CPU
2. RACK OR MOUNTING
3. OUTPU INPUT ASSEMBLY
4. POWER SUPPLY
5. PROGRAM UNIT
Different area of nodes are:-
1. CENTAL CONSOLE
2. CHP (COAL HANDLING PLANT)
3. DUST SUPPRESION ARRANGEMENT
4. DOMESTICS EFFLUENT TREATEMENT
5. WORKSHOP EFFLUENT TREATMENT

33kv OVERHEAD TRANSMISSION LINES FOR OPEN CAST MINES
• General transmission and distribution of power is done at 33kv, and distribution at 11/6.6/3.3 kv, where as L.T. distribution is done at 415/ 240 v.
• The scope of the work for construction of any overhead transmission line comprises design, supply, erection, stringing, testing, and a commissioning, The work includes :
• Supply and erection of 33kV Overhead transmission lines on single pole, double
pole and four pole structures depending on a site condition.
• Handling of conductors, stringing, sagging, conductors jointing accessories, earthing, facilities, terminal and connections.
Alignment and transmission of 33kv for open cast mine are as follow:-
