Introduction
PurposeThefollowingdocumentisacompilationoffederalandprovincialfundingsources,bothprivate
andpublic,whicharesuitableforOntariocompanies.Weattempttocoverallfundingsources
inallmarkets,andlistmostinformationrelevanttoyourdecisiontoapplytoaprogram. Our
goalistohelpspeedtheprocessofsearchingfor,andcomparingdifferentprogramstofindthe
onethatisrightforyourproject.
CaveatThis isa livingdocument that requires frequent updates,andmaynotincludeevery funding
sourceoutthere,althoughwedlike it to. Ifyoucomeacross anewsourceof funding, ora

TipsforFundingSuccess
Asanyonewhohaseverappliedforexternalfunding(namelygovernmentfunding)willtellyou,its competitive.Evenifyourcompanymeetsalltheeligibilityrequirements,yourapplication
mayberejectedsincemostfundingprogramsarediscretionary.Thefollowingareafewuseful
pointerstokeepinmindinordertoincreaseyourchancesofsuccess:
Typically,thefollowingactivitiesarenoteligibleforgovernmentfunding:o Continuingoperations.o Restructuringasaresultofbankruptcyorinsolvency.
Fundingapplicationswillgenerallyberejectediftheproject:o Hasnobenefitbeyondtheorganization;oro Appearstolackthefinancial/technical/managerialresourcesnecessarytomake
theprojectasuccess.
Ifpossible,takealookatwhatfundingisavailablebeforetakingonaproject.Ifyoure considering starting a business or launching a project that will require
externalfunding,takealookthroughtheavailablefundingsources.Thisway,you
cantailoryourprojecttotherequirementsoftheprogramfromtheoutset,rather
thantryingtoexplainyourwayintotheeligibilityrequirementslateron.
Your company must prove that it needs the money and that the funding willgenerate economic, human capital or knowledgebased benefits for Canada (or
Ontario, depending on the funding source). We cant emphasize enough how
importantitistomakeasolidcaseforyourproject.Demonstratingthatthefundswill allow you to generate revenue, create jobs, enhance the skill level of your
employees,orincreaseanimportantbaseofknowledgeisanabsolutemustinany
fundingapplication.
Governmentfundingis strategic. Thegovernment allocates fundingto programsaccordingtothenationortheprovincesstrategicgoals.Thisisparticularlytrueof
fundsdirectedtowardscientificand technologybasedprojects. Yourprojectwill

haveamuchhigherlikelihoodofgettingfundedifyoucansuccessfullyshowhowit
furtherstheunderlyingstrategicobjectivesoftheprogram.
Ittakesawhile.Theperiodbetweenwhenyousubmitafundingapplicationtothetime when the funds are disbursed can be anywhere from 2 to 12 months,
depending onthe complexityof theproject and the amount of funding you are
seeking.Bepreparedtowaitawhilebeforethefundslandinyouraccount.
Beawareofthefundstargetedphaseofcompanydevelopment.Youshouldhave
aclearideawhatcompanystagemostprogramsarefunding,whetheritbetrue
startup financing to found a company, money for a proofofconcept project,
fundingtoassistwiththecostsofcommercialization,orsupportforthepursuitof
internationalmarkets,eachfund isgenerallyinterestedinhelpingcompaniesget
pastaparticulardevelopmentalmilestone.
Be prepared by having the key tools for effective fundraising on hand. Mostfunding programs require you to submit some or all of the items listed below.
Having uptodate versionson hand willgreatly reduce theburden of preparing
fundingapplications.
o Reviewed/auditedfinancialstatements:Whiletheseareonlyreallycalledforinthecaseofestablishedcompanies,itsalsoimportantforstartupcompaniesto
findawayofdemonstratingthattheyhavetheirfinancialhouseinorder.
o Business plan: Its great to keep a basic business plan on hand for fundingapplications,butaplanshouldneverbesubmittedwithoutbeingtailoredtothe
criterialaidoutbyeachprogram.Fundingprogramsoftenhaveabusinessplan
template that theyd prefer you use when submitting anapplication. If you
follow the template to a T, it will make the work of those evaluating your
applicationthatmucheasier.
o Financialforecasts:Inthecaseofarevenuegeneratingprojectoraprogram
that provides assistance in order help a company make progress toward
commercialization,itisimportanttoprovidewellreasonedfinancialforecasts.
Theymaynotbe incrediblyaccurate,buttheytelltheprogramadministrators
thatyouhavethoughtseriouslyaboutthedevelopmentofyourcompanyand
cancreateareasonablerevenuestrategy.
o Itsalongprocess.Developingaknockoutfundingapplicationtakesagreatdealoftimeandthought. Ifpossible,puttogetheraprojectplanthatincludeskey
deliverablesfortheapplication,thendelegateasmuchaspossible,orsticktoa
schedulethatgivesyouenoughtimetoperfecteachelementoftheapplication
withoutrushing.
Eligibility criteria do not equal assessment criteria. It is essential to make thedistinction between eligibility criteria, and the things that define how your
application will be assessed beyond meeting the eligibility criteria. If you are
unsureabouthowapplicationsfora particularprogramarebeingjudged,callthe
programadministratorandaskhimorhertogiveyouarundownoftheapplication
