HistoryFoundedinJune1985,thestudioisheadedbythedirectorsHayaoMiyazakiandIsaoTakahataandtheproducerToshioSuzuki.Priortotheformationofthestudio,MiyazakiandTakahatahadalreadyhadlongcareersinJapanesefilmandtelevisionanimationandhadworkedtogetheronHols:PrinceoftheSunandPanda!Go,Panda!;andSuzukiwasaneditoratTokumaShoten'sAnimagemangamagazine.

Thestudiowasfoundedafterthesuccessofthe1984filmNausicaäoftheValleyoftheWind,writtenanddirectedbyMiyazakiforTopcraftanddistributedbyToeiCompany.TheoriginsofthefilmlieinthefirsttwovolumesofaserializedmangawrittenbyMiyazakiforpublicationinAnimageasawayofgeneratinginterestinananimeversion.[5][6]SuzukiwaspartoftheproductionteamonthefilmandfoundedStudioGhibliwithMiyazaki,whoalsoinvitedTakahatatojointhenewstudio.

OnSunday,September1,2013,HayaoMiyazakiheldapressconferenceinVenicetoconfirmhisretirement,saying:"IknowI'vesaidIwouldretiremanytimesinthepast.Manyofyoumustthink,'Onceagain.'ButthistimeIamquiteserious."[18]

OnJanuary31,2014,itwasannouncedthatGorōMiyazakiwilldirecthisfirstanimeTVseries,SanzokunoMusumeRōnya,anadaptationofAstridLindgren'sRoniatheRobber'sDaughterforNHK.Theseriesiscomputer-animated,producedbyPolygonPictures,andco-producedbyStudioGhibli.[19][20]

InMarch2014,ToshioSuzukiretiredasaproducerandassumedanewpositionofgeneralmanager.YoshiakiNishimurareplacedSuzukiintheproducerrole.[21]
