Historical InspirationInvisible CreatureI started to recognize Invisible Creature when I was
looking for designers in the faith. I came across
them through a video where they were talking
about the relationship between God and art. They
helped inspire me to be more creative and not feel
like I have to put a cross on everything to make it
Christian. I learned that I can still serve God by
respecting the craft, my service, hard work, honesty,
and love in what I do.
Alex MedinaAs with Alex Medina I found his work while looking
for designers who are in the faith. The work Alex
Medina does for Reach Records and his blog posts
about God and art has been inspiring. Being able to
look at designers in the faith is important because we
share a common goal which is to serve Christ, and
have similar passions for art, design, and music.
Kyle Cooper
Kyle Cooper is someone Lisa Abendroth led me to
when looking for research topics on motion graphics.
I have always enjoyed movies and the narratives
through film. I studied Kyle Cooper who was
inspired by Saul Bass. While doing research I also
found out that there is an interesting aspect to his
work in regards to faith.
Designers StatementDesign is more than a profession. Design is an opportunity
to pursue a passion. The work done with design should
enhance lives, discuss differences, and share experiences. It is
a form of communication that has a profound affect on lives.
Throughout history it has been one of the many effective
tools to express ideas, be creative, and build relationships.
As a designer it is important for one to work in an
environment that is positive and encouraging. The benefits
of being in that environment are; it allows the designer
to work more effectively, it promotes a team atmosphere,
and it allows each team member to better themselves each
day. With design being one of the most effective tools to
communicate a message it is important that everyone is
involved, working together, and has the opportunity to be
heard. The team that is dedicated to each other will see their
hard work in the final message to the audience.
There is an importance that cannot be denied when using
design to communicate a message. The importance of design
is that it has a responsibility to uplift and not bring people
down. The design work that is most meaningful is the work
that inspires, and engages audiences.
The key factor to creating design work that has an impact is
the ability to solve problems. Each design solution should
be approached with excitement and focus. There are always
challenges one faces when trying to communicate a message
to an audience. The enjoyment comes from seeing ideas
come to life and have an impact.
John BaskervilleJohn Baskerville developed a typeface that has always
been appealing and one of the go to typefaces for me.
Baskerville resonates with me because of the history
behind his work. Art is something that has been
around for many generations and to have a typeface
still be influential today speaks volumes about the
thought and work that went into creating the typeface.
Lyonel FeiningerWhen taking the History of Graphic Design course
at Metro State Feiningers work stood out the most.
His New European Graphics cover, 1922 was an
intriguing work of art. The expressionist feeling
to the work resonates with me, and the idea of
conveying emotion through art. When I first started
doing design being able to problem solve on how to
add emotion was a thoughtful process in my work. Lazlo Moholy NagyI became inspired by Moholy Nagys work when I
was taking a Photography and Modernism course at
Metropolitan State University of Denver. Moholy
Nagys Ideas about experimenting with the medium,
and pushing it to new heights is something that I can
relate to in my work. I do not always want to settle for
the first great idea.

Colorado Art Ranch is a nomadic arts organization founded on the belief that the arts are a catalyst for change. The creative insight of artists, in collaboration with the rigorous approach of scientists, can help solve contemporary land and social issues. In 2012, Colorado Art Ranch completed a ground-breaking transdisciplinary collaboration (Hardrock Revision) to envision uses for an inactive silver mine site in Lake City, CO.
Aldo & Leonardo: A Wilderness Science and Art CollaborationOur current art-science collaboration is a celebration of the Wilderness Act. Passed into law on September 3, 1964, the Wilderness Act marks its 50th anniversary in 2014. Our project, Aldo & Leonardo, is an interdisciplinary collaboration of art and science to honor the lands, resources and opportunities protected by the Wilderness Act.
Colorado Art Ranch has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service's Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute (ALWRI) to sponsor artist residencies in or near six wilderness sites in 2013. The scientists and artists (visual, literary, and performing) will collaborate to produce a body of work that creatively illustrates the value of wild areas and honors the scientific efforts to preserve wilderness.

14ATypI Type Conference: Hong Kong 2014The yearly ATypI Type Conference has begun its journey to Hong Kong for 2014. In order for Hong Kong to be a successful Type Conference a unique logotype and identity needs to be found. The creative minds at the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have established the conferences theme which is M: Between Black and White. The theme of M and its foundation are strongly rooted in Hong Kongs history of calligraphy. Just as with all typography the balance between the black lettering and the white negative space is what truly creates a memorable type solution. All identity solutions will be built upon this years theme with the goal of making this a commemorative experience for the type enthusiasts.

Nonlinear Narrative Motion GraphicSome of the greatest movies ever made have not always been the stories that are told from beginning, to middle, and to end in sequence. Some of the most difficult tasks of telling a nonlinear story is being able to piece each part of the story together in a unique manner which leaves the audience intrigued and guessing the entire film. The nonlinear narrative is built upon the strong foundations of writing, storyboarding, filming, and then editing. Narratives in motion are at their best when the video is; strongly written, keeps the attention, and keeps the viewer all the way to the end.
On the left and right: Stills from the Nonlinear Video are represented on both pages in sequence.
Title Sequence Motion GraphicWhen sitting down and enjoying a movie most people do not notice the craft of the title sequence. However, the title sequence has the opportunity to set the tone of the entire movie. As with the nonlinear narrative the title sequence is strongly rooted in writing, storyboarding, and execution. Without these key elements the story will look lost, or out of place. Saul Bass and Kyle Cooper are among films most sought after inspiration for directors and studios. The ability that they have to create a movie within itself is astonishing and a design craft of its own.

There are many similar businesses that have to compete with each other; Playstation or Xbox, Target or Walmart, Costco or Sams Club. With all these available resources it is important for a company to find an audience, establish its identity, and produce quality products. KingSoopers is a strong community based company that has a strong consumer base, recognizable identity, and quality products. Art RanchGrant Pounds Art Ranch is a creative opportunity for not only artists to be involved with, but also engaging the many sciences. Art Ranch should not center around making art, but should focus on the ability for art to create and improve our communities. Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the many inspirations behind this collaborative community established by Grant Pound. Da Vinci was successful at creating ideas through art concepts in order to be technologically inventive. That idea is the basis for what Art Ranch seeks to do which is to generate ideas through artistic mediums and bring those ideas to life through the innovative processes of science.

ARTPOSIA Colorado Art Ranch owns no land and no buildings. We bring the residencies and Artposia to towns throughout Colorado, where housing, studio space and conference facilities are rented or donated.
We mix literary and visual artists in a residency to allow the possibility of collaboration. Each Artposium explores the intersection of the arts with social and scientific matters. The themes draw from local history, culture, landscapes and issues.
Because Colorado Art Ranch is nomadic, it connects artists, writers and supporters of the arts across the state. Because it is interdisciplinary, the Artposium fosters collaboration among artists, writers, scientists and policy makers.

Mississippi Red FoxesThe state of Mississippi is in need of a professional sports team. Out of all the states with professional sports teams Mississippi is a state which lacks in that area. Given the states size, popularity, and influence in history Mississippi would be a prime choice to establish a Major League Baseball club. The weather is capable of sustaining a MLB team year round, but to establish a successful team more elements are needed. The identity needs to reflect the values, aspirations, and history of the state. The identity also needs to be able to sustain over long periods of time, and bring an aura to the organization. These elements combined can create an established brand such as their other competitors.

Andy Mineo Heroes For SaleBeing a successful artist in an industry that is filled with successful artists is a tough task to accomplish. It is even harder when the message one is trying to communicate differs from the industry standard. Andy Mineo is an artist who seeks to engage culture with a message different than that of a traditional hip hop genre. Mineos message of hope and faith within the Hip Hop community is seen as uninteresting and stale. However, Mineo has taken the time to learn his craft, and establish new creative resourcefulness that has opened the door to engage the culture. With a weighty impact on culture there is an opportunity to inspire others. With this opportunity Andy Mineo needs to establish an identity that is not cliche, but reflects the creativity of his music.

Whether hes on stage bringing an audience to its feet with his riveting performance or off stage fielding interview questions with a
potent combination of intellect and wit, its obvious Andy Mineo is a born communicator and hip hop music is his instrument for
reaching the masses.
It is absolutely undeniable that hip hop is becoming the universal language, Mineo says expressing an unbridled enthusiasm for his
artistic vehicle. Its so influential because you are able to say so much in a short period of time. The essence of hip hop is the boldness
of it so youre able to be exactly who you are. You are able to say exactly what you want. You represent exactly what is deepest and
dearest to you and people respond to that. They respond to that realness.
That musical authenticity, heart for people and keen insight into the human condition coalesce on Mineos Reach Records debut
Heroes for Sale. We make heroes out of a lot of things, he says. We make heroes out of people. We believe ourselves to be greater
than we really are. We make ourselves look like heroes to other people. What I really wanted to do is show the brokenness of the heroes
that we create and the heroes that we try to be in order to show that there is ultimately only one great hero.
To underscore that message, Mineo was willing to strip back the layers of his own life and be honest with his audience. I get really
transparent on these songs, he confesses. I want to let people see into my brokenness in hopes that other people would identify with

See Water Differently
Denver Metro Water FestivalThe Denver Metro Water Festival seeks to bring middle school students to the college campus for an engaging learning experience. The students will move through the campus exploring and listening to experts speak about varying aspects of water conservation. In order to engage the students the event must focus on the middle school students. Jesse Montgomery has creatively produced a solution to the idea of seeing water differently. With this identity in place the materials will need to be created in order to engage the middle school students.

I have traveled the road less traveledI have the traveled the road less traveled is a statement which puts
into words the journey of trying to complete my college degree.
I want to use this opportunity to thank my Savior Jesus Christ
for providing me with the grace, patience, and strength one
needs in order to accomplish something such as graduating from
Metropolitan State University of Denver. I also want to thank my
parents, my family, friends and loved ones. Looking back I have
always had the support, love, and guidance needed to accomplish
what I hoped to accomplish. I am thankful for the opportunity
that I had to attend school, afford school, and to attend my classes.
I have learned from my professors, classmates, and students on
campus how to be a better person, designer, and friend. Thank you
for taking the time to review the portfolio.
