Tobacco Cessation
Presented by: Deborah Franklin, DDS, MA, LPC and C.D. Johnson, DDS, MS
Course Description:The first part of this course will comprehensively review the resulting pathophysiological aspects of addiction to tobacco and other volatilized inhaled organic products. An extensive review of the resulting clinical pathology will be presented and discussed.
The second part of this course will discuss the consequences of smoking to oral and general health and the types of tobacco currently in use. The physiological and habit components of addiction and interventions for smoking cessation will be discussed, including a brief intervention suitable for use in a dental office. Health benefits of quitting smoking, and of pharmacological treatments for smoking cessation, will also be discussed.

OnFridayandSaturday,Feb.7-8,2014,TheUniversityofTexasSchoolofDentistryatHoustonandtheGreaterHoustonDentalSocietywillhostacombinedTexasMissionofMercy(TMOM)andGiveKidsaSmile(GKAS)Day.Ourgoalistotreat500adultseachday,plus150childrenonSaturday,makingitthelargestTMOMinhistory!
Toourknowledge,UTSDisthefirstdentalschooltohostaTMOM,andweareparticularlypleasedtobeabletoofferournew,state-of-the-artbuildingasthevenue.Asalways,the event will rely heavily on volunteers from the dental communitytoprovidecarefortheseneedypatients,butIcan’tthinkofabetterexampleofourpartnershipwiththepracticing community than the turnout of volunteers we always see for events like this.
Our students will be heavily involved as well, especially withpediatriccarethroughtheGKAScomponentoftheweekend. As such, both events will yield benefits far beyond the care provided or its value. By example, every dental professional who volunteers will be encouraging future dentists, dental hygienists and other members of the oral health care team to do the same when they are called.
