IMLS recognizes the need for children and youth to develop 21st Century Skills to equip them for success in a fast-paced, technological world. One of the pillars of learning and innovation skills is creativity. IMLS adapted and defined what creativity skills look like in a museum or library context with a view to creating some building blocks to grow individualized programs specific to a particular museum or library’s mission that will inspire young people to flourish within their communities and their careers – see the IMLS categories in the pink box to the right. In a recent 2010 study, CEOs of major corporations identified creativity as the most important skill for successfully navigating our increasingly complex world – see the IBM categories in the blue box and circles to the right.
Creativity Garden, funded in 2015-2016 by Disney, provided creativity-enhancing experiences to more than 75,000 children and youth (aged 6 to 14) through nearly a quarter of a million hours of programming, focused on reaching traditionally underserved populations. The 87 minigrants were distributed to a wide range of ASTC-member institutions in both urban and rural settings covering 38 states, including Puerto Rico. The museums varied in size with 24% representing very small institutions (less than $1million Annual Operating Income (AOI)), 25% small ($1 to 3million AOI), 39% medium ($3 to 10million AOI), and 13% large (greater than $10million AOI). The Center for Childhood Creativity white paper, Inspiring a Generation to Create: Critical Components of Creativity in Children provided the key research for the project. Participating science centers and museums were asked to incorporate at least three components of creativity into their programming.
