Faith and Begorrah! The leprechauns who take time off from searching for gold at the
end of the rainbow to collect and count the food donations after church each week really
like to see our baskets at the back of the church and in the atrium filled to overflow-
ing. May the luck o' the Irish come your way each time you bring a donation to support
the Worthington and Gladden Food Pantries! The leprechauns want us to be extra gen-
erous this month and spend some of our "gold" to help stock the shelves for those whose
winter cupboards are bare. All kinds of toiletries and non-perishable food items are welcome, but this month's
LUCKY suggestions appear below.
Our children and youth did a great job with their Love Offering for the Worthington Resource Pantry last
month - thanks to their encouragement and your generosity, they collected 147 food items and 17 personal
care items on Valentine's Day! Be sure to thank our kids who set such a good example for us of giving from
the heart.
March 6 - granola bars with fruit & nuts, Kleenex
13 - 100% fruit juice, feminine products
20 - canned chicken or tuna, zipseal baggies
27 - canned vegetables, shampoo

MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE: MUSIC NOTES
The Children's Church crew sings
"I See the Love of God in You" to
Mr. Chubbikins the guinea pig on
February 14th, using the ASL sign
for "pig."
A Neat Story about the Easter Anthems
When I was in graduate school, I fell in love with a choral setting of the hymn “This joyful Eastertide”. Each
of us in the class where I was introduced to this piece got one copy of the music, and mine must have been a
casualty of moving from my last church, because I cannot find it anywhere! I thought this year about how nice
it would be to teach this anthem to the choir, but I knew from using it previously that it is out of print. A quick
Google search revealed that the composer, James Laster, is still alive, so I sent him a short email explaining
my delight with his work, my sadness over having lost track of the music, and asking if he knew how I might
secure another copy. Not twelve hours later, I had a return email from Mr. Laster telling me that he had called
the publisher and arranged for us to get a copy of the music. He also told me that he had composed two other
anthems to go with “This joyful Eastertide” that had never been published and asked if I would like to have
those, as well – and, by the way, that he has extended family in Worthington. So -- the choir will be singing all
three of Mr. Laster’s delightfully charming Easter carols this year, and we hope you will enjoy them!
Jazz Eucharist, Sunday, April 3
Vaughn Wiester, jazz musician, educator, and Clintonville resident, will lead the music for worship at both
services on April 3. Vaughn is a former university jazz instructor, a jazz arranger, and a former trombonist
with the Woody Herman orchestra. He has arranged for Woody, for the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, and for
Terry Waldo’s Ragtime Orchestra. In February 2012 he was selected to give the pre-concert lecture for
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra’s Stan Kenton Centennial Concert. Vaughn's Famous Jazz Orchestra performs
every Monday evening at the Clintonville Woman's Club.
Choir Schedule
The choir is open to anyone who would like to participate and always welcomes new singers.
Thursdays, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Choir Room
Sundays, 10:30 a.m. (8:15 on the first Sunday of the month), in the Chancel

We have begun the walk through Lent, which will take us through the events of Holy Week and, eventually, to the joy of the empty tomb on Easter morning! I hope that all of the children and youth of St. John’s will be able to experience a meaningful Holy Week and Easter journey this year, with time for worship, prayer and reflection with friends and family.
Children’s Church will meet during the first half of the 9:00 am service each Sunday, and Sunday School and Youth Education classes will meet from 10:20 to 11:00 am on Sundays March 6th and 13th. These classes will not meet on Palm Sunday or Easter, due to special activities on those days. Growing In Faith Together (GIFT) for babies & toddlers will meet in the Nursery at 10:20 am on March 6th and 20th.
The Youth Group (for 6th through 12th graders and their friends) will gather on March 6th, when we’ll walk over to Jet’s for lunch after the 11:15 am worship service and return to the Carriage House for a chance to get creative with a special art project. And on Easter Sunday, the 27th, we’ll have a Scavenger Hunt of our own while the younger kids are outside hunting for eggs.
Palm Sunday is March 20th. We’ll celebrate Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem with a special procession to open the 9:00 am service that morning! All kids and youth who’d like to be part of the procession (and parents and grandparents are welcome too, of course) should arrive in the Atrium by 8:50 am to receive palms and instructions and get lined up. And from 10:20 to 11:00 am, we’ll have our intergenerational Palm Sunday festivities (including palm cross making) in Kilbourne Hall.
During Holy Week, we’ll journey with Jesus through his time in Jerusalem, his betrayal and crucifixion, and eventually to the joy of his resurrection on Easter morning! Children and youth are encouraged to attend the 7:00 pm worship services on Maundy Thursday (March 24th) and Good Friday (March 25th). Children’s programming with be offered in Kilbourne Hall during the first part of both services, after which kids and youth will rejoin their families in the Nave.
We’ll celebrate Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday (March 27th) with special Easter Egg Hunt festivities in the time between the two worship services (10:30 to 11:00 am). Families should gather in Kilbourne Hall, where the fun will begin at 10:30. We’ll divide the kids into two groups (one for kindergarteners and younger, the other for 1st through 5th graders) and head outside for egg hunting on the church grounds. Youth in 6th through 12th grades will have their own Scavenger Hunt at the same time.
Last but not least, an important summertime “heads up!” item to put on your calendar now -- this year’s Vacation Bible School experience at St. John’s will be “Fruits of the Spirit” and will help kids to understand and explore Christian virtues (as described by the Apostle Paul in Galatians 5:22-23). VBS 2016 will meet on four consecutive Monday evenings in June – the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th – from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, with dinner included. Watch for more details coming next month!
Please let me know if you have any questions about anything. I hope to see your family at St. John’s this month!

STEWARDSHIP OF WILL
My cat, Alexander, and I have been engaged in a battle of wills. He has a
chronic condition that causes sneezing and watery eyes. There is a
powder available to treat this condition. All I have to do is mix it with
wet food and serve it to him; at least in theory. Sometimes he will
happily eat what I have prepared. Other times, he takes one sniff, gives
me a glowering look, then walks away making little muttering sounds. (It
is probably a good thing that I do not understand what he is saying.)
Sometimes he will give the food a desultory lick, then look at me as if
saying, “There, I did it. I ate some. Now, give me what I want!”
I’ve tried different brands of food; I’ve tried rewarding him; I’ve tried
sprinkling it on his dry food. It is hit or miss as to when he will actually
eat it. I have NO difficulty in getting him to eat food without the
medicine. He is never finicky about that. When he does take the
medicine for several days, he feels better. Unfortunately, the correlation
between taking what is good for him and feeling better is lost on him.
Instead, he usually focuses only on the here and now of eating the food
without the distasteful medicine. Like any cat, he can be very stubborn.
This is not unusual behavior for anyone. I would venture to say that few of us actually look to do something
that is distasteful. We avoid it. This made me wonder how many times we can be acting just like Alexander
when God is trying to get us to understand something.
Personally, I’m accustomed to analyzing any given situation; weigh the pros and cons, assess the effort
involved and determine if the outcome will provide a benefit equal to or greater than the pros plus my effort. If
I do not have sufficient data, then I do not formulate an action plan or hypothesis without many assumptions
and large margins of error. It is a scientific approach that has generally served me well over the years. God,
however, does not always accommodate such methodology. Several years ago he took away the gift of faith
(or perhaps I set it aside). Just like Alexander, I became stubbornly attached to what I thought was best for me.
He allowed this but He is also infinitely patient. My own “best for me” turned out to be the very opposite –
once I stopped listening to myself and began to realize that the Spirit was trying to tell me what was best for
me. It was a distasteful experience to admit to myself that my own analysis and conclusions were not only
flawed, but entirely wrong. But by doing this, I was able to finally understand what the Spirit was saying. This
brought me to St. John’s three years ago and I’ve experienced a renewal of faith that no amount of scientific
analysis would ever have predicted.
As I’ve said before, Lent is a time of renewal and stewardship of one’s self. A time to listen to what the Spirit
is trying to tell us. It is not always easy to understand what we are being told let alone comprehend the benefits.
Jesus has told us the importance of love and the abundant love that the Father has for us. Jesus gave us the
Spirit so that his love would always be with us. During this Lenten season, let us all avoid the battle of wills
with God. Let us trust in his love so we can accept the fact that God has a greater understanding of what is
“good for us”. It is up to us to listen even though we may not understand his greater purpose. Lent is the
perfect time to set aside our own intentions and listen. What we hear may seem distasteful, but ultimately will
prove to be something that is good for us. In fact, it may prove to be the beginning of something wonderful.

ROOF - Reflecting On Our Faith
St. John’s has a holistic ministry in education in
Liberia through PIMIL, Partners-in-Ministry-Liberia.
Since 2007, all together, individual members, the
ECW (now disbanded), the Social Justice and
Outreach Committee, have supported eight students
in school. The parish is repairing the infrastructure of
the Episcopal Elementary School damaged during the
Civil War (1989-2003). The present project involves
replacing the asbestos roof that leaks when it rains. In
addition, the asbestos poses a health hazard to the
students, teachers, administration and staff. The
report from the principal of the school, John Moiwoh,
to the Social Justice and Outreach Committee
indicates that negotiation with the local traders to
supply the building materials to start the project has
been concluded. It is expected that the work will
begin during the dry season, which is about now, and
will be completed by April when the dry season ends.
Please find John Moiwob’s written report with
financials on the bulletin board in the Atrium.

The Following people have recently made a donation to the St. John’s All Saints Fund:
Janice F. Howden in memory of Fran Gilbert
All donations to the All Saints Fund are used for permanent or semi-permanent improvements for St. John’s
programs or premises. If you wish to make a contribution in honor of someone or in thanksgiving for any
event, simply write a check to St. John’s Episcopal Church with a notation for the “All Saints Fund.” The

Enrollment for 2015-2016 school year has been in progress since
January and at this point we have only a few openings left in our
classrooms.
St. John’s Early Education Center has once again been recognized
as a Five Star preschool in the State of Ohio Step Up To Quality
program. We are the only school in Worthington to have achieved
this award. Information about our program is available on our
web site www.sjpreschool.com or call our office 614-885 2315.
Our teachers have been continuing their education to stay abreast
of the latest educational methods, focusing on the individual child
as well as keeping the flow of communication open with the parents. Classroom teachers have created private
blogs to keep parents informed of daily activities in their classroom. We are taking full advantage of the
computer age technology! Truly they go above and beyond what is expected from a part time teacher in
preschool. The excellent program we offer along with exceptional teaching staff makes our preschool an
outstanding one in the Worthington area.
The board voted to increase tuition for next year for;
3 year olds , 2 half day sessions per week will be $160.00 per month.
3 year olds, 3 half day sessions per week will be $190.00 per month.
4/5 year olds, 4 half day sessions per week will be $230.00 per month.
4/5 year olds, 3 extended day sessions per week will be $250.00 per month.
4/5 year old Enrichment afternoons $135.00 (with lunch) and $95.00 (without lunch) per month.
Even with the increases we will continue to be within the median price range of other preschools in the area.
We will be offering Summer Camp this year on the following dates, June 6-9 and July 18-21. The camps are
9 a.m.-12 noon for children 3-5 years of age and are theme related. The teachers plan activities that are age
appropriate, fun, educational and not weather dependent. Parents have told us that it is a fun way for their
children to spend time in the summer!! Forms will be available in the school office or on our web site
www.sjpreschool.com
The parent group is already planning the Spring Flower sale which will begin on Monday March 7. Forms for
ordering will be available in the church and school offices. The forms must be turned in no later than April 5th
and the flowers will be delivered on Thursday April 28th. The sale will be by order only and there will be no
extra flowers for sale on the delivery date, so think spring and come in and order those pretty flowers. If you
would like to look at a Foertmeyer catalogue please go to www.springflowersale.com.
