VIII. DETAILS OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE AT UNIVERSITY LEVEL:
Since appointed Lecturer 1 at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences,
Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in 2002, I have been teaching a large number of
medical undergraduate (300, 400 and 500 Level MBBS) students in the Orthopaedic and
Traumatology Unit, in the Department of Surgery at least on five occasions in an academic
year for a period of 8 weeks on each occasion. The teachings include didactic lectures,
tutorials, group discussions and procedures such as application of Plaster of Paris Casts,
Tractions, Manipulation Under Anaesthesia (MUA) etc. I also take part in organization of
examination as well as examination of undergraduate students up to the final MBBS. I am
also involved in setting and conducting the recently introduced Objective Structured
Clinical Examination (OSCE). I am the departmental expert on Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) matters.
I started as an Associate Lecturer in Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Ladoke
Akintola University in November 2001, before converting to full employment in April, the
following year.
Between October 2008 and March 2009, I was an adjunct lecturer at the newly established
College of Health Sciences, Osun State University, Osogbo where I was involved in
teaching Gross Anatomy to the 200 Level MBBS students. In March, 2009, I started a year-
long visiting lectureship in Anatomy. I was the Acting Head of the Department of
Anatomy. I was actively involved in the recruitment of both academic and technological
staff into the department, development of the departmental curriculum and the planning
and supervision and the construction of the departmental building. I also teach the 200 and
300 Levels medical students Upper and Lower limbs, Abdomen and Pelvis, and the
10
Thorax. Over the year, I also acted for the Provost of the College whenever he was on
leave. In October 2010, I became a professor of surgery at the University. I was the Head
of the Department as well as the Dean of the Faculty of the Basic Medical Sciences
between October 2010 and May 2011.
In 2011, I moved my services to the Ekiti State University as a Professor of Surgery. I am
the current Head of Department of Surgery.
PROFESSIONAL DUTIES AS CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON
Since 2001, I have been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Traumatologist at
LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo (LTH) (2001-2011) and Ekiti State University
Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) (2011 till date). Presently, I also hold a locum appointment
with LTH. I am involved in the investigation and treatment of patients with orthopaedic
and traumatic conditions. This involves care of patients referred from local private and
state hospitals, Out-Patient Departments and admitted patients. Because there are few
orthopaedic surgeons on ground, specialization is impracticable, so that we see all cases of
orthopaedics as well as trauma.
I participate fully in the weekly departmental reviews, seminars and postgraduate rounds
organized by the department for resident doctors and medical students. My Consultant
Orthopaedic Clinic holds twice weekly, and elective surgical operations are on
Wednesdays. Coverage of the Accident and Emergency unit is rotated among the
orthopaedic surgeons.
11
At LTH, I am currently the chairman of the Ethical Committee of the Hospital, as well as
the co-editor of the official, peer-reviewed journal of the hospital, the Western Nigeria
Journal of Medical Sciences (WNJMS).
At EKSUTH, I am the Head of the Department of Surgery.
I have successfully supervised or co-supervised the Part II FMCS dissertations of four
resident doctors, three from LTH and one from the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching
Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife. I am currently supervising the dissertation of two candidates
from the LTH.
Candidates supervised.
1. Dr Agodirin O O – FMCS.
Title: Controlled randomized clinical trial of tramadol in acute abdomen
2. Dr Popoola S. O – FMCS (Ortho).
Title: Comparison of the Kampala Trauma Score with the Revised Trauma Score in
the management of trauma
3. Dr Adejumobi M O - Ongoing
Title: A prospective randomized comparative study of closed passive drainage and
closed low suction drainage for mastectomy wounds at Ladoke Akintola University
of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
4. Dr Idris A - FMCS.
Title: Relative values of primary and delayed- primary wound closures on the
incidence of wound infection after laparotomy for secondary peritonitis at LAUTECH
Teaching Osogbo
12
Between 2003 and 2008, I was invited by the Hospital Management Board of Ondo State to
give specialist orthopaedic and trauma care to patients in the State Specialist Hospital,
Akure. I was also involved in the on-the-job-training of their Medical Officers and Interns.
I also teach and guide postgraduate medical students during their residency training for the
Fellowship of the West African Postgraduate College of Surgeons and the National
Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. Since 2005, I have been lecturing at the biannual
update/revision courses in Research Methodology for the Part 2 Fellowship Candidates of
the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College held at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital
(LUTH), Idi-Araba Lagos.
