Dr Julian Dooley is the Associate Director, Sellenger Centre for Research on Law, Justice and Social Change, Edith Cowan University.

Technology has become an integral component of social functioning, especially for young people. The average teenager in WA spends up to 4 hours a day online in non-schoolwork related activities, such as, using social networking sites, chat, playing games, watching TV and downloading music.

TheInternetprovidesmanyopportunitiestoincreaseknowledgeandawarenessinadditiontoenhanceanddevelopsocialrelationships.However,itisclearthattherearerisksassociatedwiththeuseoftechnology.

Inthisworkshop,DrDooleywillprovideacomprehensiveoverviewoftheopportunitiesandrisksassociatedwiththeuseoftechnologyforprofessionalsandstudents.

The workshop will include:

• Howthehelpingprofessionalscanmoreeffectivelyusetechnology&dealwithrisksforthemselvesandothers

• Addressingtherelationshipbetweenonlineandofflinebehavioursandpotentialimpactonmentalandsocialhealth

• Describingtheprofileofthemostat-riskusers&theactivitiestheytypicallyengagein

• Aninteractivesessionexamininganddiscussingprotectivesafetystrategiesinadditiontoevidence-basedapproachestorespondingtovictimisation.

Theworkshopaimstoassistinimprovedunderstandingabouttechnologyrisksandcybersafetymeasuresfortheparticipantsandinapplicationforstudentsinschoolsbasedoncurrentresearch.
